I realized today, with my comic book store moving, they’re much closer to my brother’s workplace. Which means he’ll have more time to stop in. Which means the chances of us both being their at the same time have greatly increased.

Man, I feel sorry for the poor bastards that work there.

Scarab Sages

It’s going to be a busy day. Grocery store. Some chores at home. Then I’ve got to take the boy for the first of this three shifts selling popcorn with the Scout Troop.

Scarab Sages

The boy did pretty well in two days of popcorn selling for the Scouts. He did especially well on the second day, by himself - $155 in sales in just 35 minutes.

Sadly, the third day had to be cancelled, as the troop ran out of popcorn to sell (more on the way).

In the meantime, I shared a link with all my FB friends.l, so they can order themselves if they so desire. I expect one or two hits, mostly from family.

There’s also supposed to be some way to print out door hangers with a link or something. Haven’t figured that out on the app yet.

Scarab Sages

One thing I’m proud of myself for doing - I bought a card swipe attachment for my phone. It makes it way more convenient to do face-to-face sales.

It was only $10 on Amazon, and I figured it was a worthwhile investment since he’ll likely be in scouts for the next seven years or so.

I just saw that Queen Elizabeth II passed away. I was very sorry to hear that, as I found her to be an impressive leader. Normally, I might start a Rest In Peace thread, but last time I did that with someone connected to UK politics it was quickly trolled into oblivion.

So I’ll settle for putting it here, where it’s less likely to be seen.

Rest In Peace.

I also bought the new 5E Spelljammer box set. I was on the fence about buying it, until I heard someone complained about content in it, and the company caved and said they’d change it. I figured if they’re going to change future prints, maybe original prints would be worth something one day.

Never can tell.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Wife just got a delivery from Amazon, and the packing tape was Rings of Power themed.

Creative marketing? Desperation? Bit of both, maybe?

Scarab Sages

Didn’t take long for the a-holes to start popping up.

Scarab Sages

Urgh!

New location for the scout troop to sell popcorn is closer, but it’s a Kroger. I have my doubts as to how much popcorn we can sell in front of a grocery store.

Scarab Sages

Unsurprisingly, we’ve seen zero popcorn sales via the link I posted to FB. I think it lends credence to my theory that FB “friends” should instead be called “acquaintances”.

Scarab Sages

The boy did great in popcorn sales today at Kroger. In two hours he sold $340 worth of product. I think he could have done better if he’d talked to more people. Still, I’m proud of him.

Scarab Sages

Ugh! Monday.

Scarab Sages

Holy Schnike! My old co-worker from Philly was actually in the office! Probably the first time in 2 years or so.

I’ve been calling at random times, usually when I was really bored. It was kind of cool to talk to him again, even if it wasn’t for very long.

Scarab Sages

Ouch!

Stoopid blood work.

Scarab Sages

AAAAARRRGGGGHH!!!

I’m sadly finished with The Last Kingdom. Now the only new things I have to watch are House of the Dragon (not sure how many more episodes) and Primal (only one episode to go, I think).

And it’s only mid-September, which means not a lot of new things dropping on the various streaming services.

Scarab Sages

Busy day so far. Up at my usual times, doing some computer work. Then I had to bring my daughter to her art class, come home, get the dishes washing, and make a grocery list. Once the boy and I picked his sister up, we made it over to the grocery store, then back home for lunch.

In another 20 minutes or so, we’ll go up to Lowe’s for the boy’s one hour shift selling popcorn for the scouts.

After that, I’ll probably have to put a load of clothes in the wash.

Scarab Sages

Ugh!

Came across something that has, thankfully, been a rarity since I moved away from Philly - a cyclehole. They’re the kind of a-hole bicycle riders who think they own the road, and that what they’re doing makes them better than you. Very similar to golfholes. Also to a few people who post hereabouts.

They were everywhere in Philly, but are mercifully few in Houston (at least my part). I think I’ve only ever seen a (small) group of them two or three times in the 9 years I’ve been here.

I walked with the boy around the neighborhood this morning, so he could put flyers for his popcorn selling on doors. As we approached one house, a police car suddenly pulled up. We’d only been doing this a few minutes, so I was certain they weren’t there for us. Turns out, they knocked on the door of a house we were just passing, where a friend of the boy from school lives. Another officer showed up as well. They were talking to the wife/mom.

I told the boy it was none of our business, and forbade him from asking his friend about it. I did, however, let him know that if his friend offered up any discussion, he should be a good friend and politely listen.

Scarab Sages

I skipped smoking my monthly pork butt two weeks in a row, but I’ve got it in today. Then, on Tuesday, it will be fresh red beans and rice.

Scarab Sages

Woot! Despite the heat, the boy did $365 in popcorn sales for the Scouts today. And another $54 in donations.

All told, he’s done nearly $1300 in sales, of which he’ll get 27%. The rest goes to Scouts BSA as a whole.

Scarab Sages

Of course, when I went to sign up for the similar time slot next weekend, some others had already filled both slots. Same with the weekend after that.

I think the people setting the times up saw how good my boy’s done at those times, and decided to snag them from him.

Scarab Sages

Is it just me, or has the spam been strong lately?

Scarab Sages

A pleasant surprise this morning. I stepped out into the backyard with the dog, and was greeted by cool air - about 60 degF. I checked my phone app and it said we’d have this for at least the next week or so, with accompanying cooler temps during the day (so maybe only in the mid to low 90s).

Scarab Sages

Ugh! Why does it take so long to get an appointment with a doctor these days?

I mean, I have my suspicions why. However, there not something I can say around here. Not without someone snitching, anyway.

Scarab Sages

Of course, if my body hadn’t decided to start falling apart the last few years, the length of time to get an appointment would be moot.

Now I know how Indy must have felt when he said “It's not the years, honey. It's the mileage."

Scarab Sages

Low audience standards - the bane of good entertainment everywhere.

Scarab Sages

Speaking of bane of good entertainment - the other night, just for laughs, I started watching the 90s X-Men cartoon. Damn, that was some cheesy dialogue and voice acting. Still, for its time the animation was pretty solid. And they were adapting as directly from the comics as possible.

Scarab Sages

On the radio this morning, they were talking about a concert over the weekend, where Eddie Vedder and Stevie Nicks performed Stop Dragging My Heart Around. That’s cool.

Scarab Sages

I find it interesting that a bunch of YouTubers are living rent-free in the heads of show-runners for the big “hit” show for mega corporation. Those dudes and ladies making videos in some room at home must be touching several nerves.

Scarab Sages

The boy is very excited that his Halloween costume arrived today. It’s one of those inflatable dinosaur costumes. He and a couple of his friends each have one, and will roam the neighborhood in a pack for trick-or-treating.

Scarab Sages

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I had forgotten to mention how proud I am of my boy. He’s been selling popcorn as part of a fundraiser with his Scouts BSA troop. When we first started selling, he set a goal for himself of $2000 in sales. He passed that mark this past weekend. And we’ve got two more selling shifts coming this Sunday.

It was amazing to see how he changed over the course of doing this. His sales pitch evolved as he became more experienced, as did his confidence to just talk to adults he doesn’t know.

Scarab Sages

I’ve been rewatching the first season of the Netflix Daredevil. Just to remind myself there were once actually MCU TV shows that were actually good.

And to remind myself that TV Daredevil was kick ass at one point.

Confidence and seeing hard work pay off will help him in life more then anything else, good for you both!

Scarab Sages

It takes a special kind of scumbag to be gleeful over the death of someone who is, to all appearances, a decent human being. Reminds me of some of the people who post on these boards.

Scarab Sages

Pretty day, though. Hopefully, it won’t get too hot. The boy and I are set to go over to Christ the Good Shepherd later this afternoon. His scout troop is helping out at their fall festival.

Scarab Sages

I f-ing hate getting old. Just two hours helping out at the church festival damn near wiped me the hell out. It didn’t help there weren’t enough scout volunteers, which meant the parents had to help out as well. I’m very disappointed in the troop.

Scarab Sages

The boy did his last day of popcorn selling for the scouts yesterday. Ended up with total sales around $2300. He’ll get back around 30% of that (around $700) with the rest going to the larger program. He’ll also get a cut of the cash donations the troop received as well, which I’m hoping will be another $100 or so.

All that money will go into his scout account, so he can pay for camping trips and the like.

Scarab Sages

Gods damned mystery illness. Why do you do this to me, Universe?

Scarab Sages

Well, at least it’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

Scarab Sages

Godsdamn! I hate the f-ing USPS. I’d call them f-ing incompetent, but that would be a grave insult to incompetent people everywhere. It really is one of the worst “businesses” on the f-ing planet.

Scarab Sages

Stoopid USPS. They messed up delivery of my package on Monday, but somehow got it done on Tuesday. I checked my package - contrary to their notification, there was in fact very sufficient address to make the delivery. As long as you weren’t an incompetent fool.

Scarab Sages

Happy Friday?

That remains to be seen.

Scarab Sages

The radio did just play Whip It by Devo, however. So that’s at least one good thing.

Scarab Sages

Sweet! The boy wanted to go to a Halloween event at his school tonight, mostly so he could enter a raffle. While we were wandering around, I caught the whiff of popcorn. We followed the smell to the school’s little concession stand, and they had bags of awesome, super salty, popcorn. The kind you get from an old movie theater style machine.

It reminded me of the halcyon days of my youth, about when I was the boy’s age. My school had a popcorn machine like that, and we could buy bags for a quarter. Good times.

Scarab Sages

The last of my decorations went up yesterday. The candy is bought. The pumpkin is carved. It’s almost time for the greatest of all holidays!

Scarab Sages

“I could have sworn I had that toenail when I came in here.”

In other news, walking with a numb big toe is really weird.

Scarab Sages

Happy Friday?

Jury’s still out. So far it’s been….not bad. So I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Scarab Sages

Yes, I have decided it will be a happy Friday for me. At least in part. Sucktastic things may still be coming my way, but I saw a post elsewhere that reminded me there are some good things happening today.

Scarab Sages

There are days when I miss how open and welcoming this message board once was.

Scarab Sages

I don’t want today to be busy, but it seems like it’s going to get that way all by itself. That’s what happens when you have to put things off.
