I heard an awesome phrase this morning…..

“Once you’ve got their balls in a vice, you squeeze until they sound like your sister.”

Painful, just thinking about it, but it’s one that I hope to work into a real life conversation one day.

Stoopid accident! I loved my Trailblazer!

At least everyone was okay. Except for me, anyway.

Scarab Sages

In other news - F U Universe!

The insurance company totaled my vehicle, which I expected. It was already 16 years old, and had been pretty badly damaged. What did surprise me was how much they were giving me for it. I honestly expected way less.

Just a few more hours and the wife and kids leave for a few days in Louisiana. They’re going to see my in laws. I’m staying home with the dog (whom we can’t board because she’s crazy).

When they return, they’ll bring my mother with them. She’ll stay through Christmas, going back and forth between my house and my younger brother’s.

Randomly checking YouTube yesterday, and I came across a podcast celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the release of Jackson’s LotR: The Two Towers. So I decided the best way to celebrate was watch the movie.

Of course, I had to watch Fellowship first…..

Today, I’ll probably put Return of the King on. I would have done it last night, but didn’t really feel like staying up after midnight.

Scarab Sages

The wife and kids were supposed to drive home today. The weather is supposed to be crappy, however, so the wife asked me if I was cool with them waiting until tomorrow.

Another day of peace and quiet? Sign me up.

Although, to be honest, it does seem a bit too quiet at times.

Scarab Sages

Sadly, my mother won’t be riding to Texas with the wife and kids. She’s not feeling well, and she wasn’t able to get an appointment until Thursday.

That sucks, but I’m not surprised. The universe always pulls some kind of crap to mess with our holidays. That’s going on at least five years now.

Once upon a time, there was a zombie who worked for his father in the family dry cleaners. The father would sometimes bring his own clothes to be cleaned there. One day, the zombie thought it would be funny to replace all the buttons on one of his father’s flannel shirts with buttons of different colors.

The father was…..not amused.

Yet the father did not change the buttons back. Nor did he throw the shirt away or stop wearing it. When the father passed away, the shirt hung in his closet, forgotten and alone.

Until now…..

Scarab Sages

Good bye and good riddance 2022.

As for 2023 - I look forward to seeing how the Universe is going to mess with me.

Ugh!

Earlier last week, I was asked if I could assist my boy’s old cub scout pack with their Pinewood Derby Workshop, where we help the scouts build their cars. Being the nice guy I am, of course I said “yes”.

So yesterday I was on my feet for about four hours straight. With my legs already being sore before that, I was in a great deal of discomfort the rest of the day.

A little liquid painkiller helped - the first booze since October. I had avoided it completely while on prednisone.

Last night, just for fun, I rewatched the Solomon Kane movie. It’s a good enough movie, I suppose. However, it makes me wish they’d made at least one more, maybe actually adapting one of the REH stories.

Scarab Sages

Huzzah! I dodged a bullet, so to speak.

A while back the wife had bought tickets through the boy’s school orchestra to go see the Houston Symphony this coming Sunday. Since then, however, she got sucked into a business trip, for which she leaves on Saturday.

For me to bring the boy, we’d need someone to watch my daughter. Sadly, my brother and his wife will both be on a scout camping trip, not getting back until late Sunday.

Scarab Sages

It’s not that I hate the symphony. I just hate having to go downtown. Especially, lately, when my health is very hit or miss.

Scarab Sages

It seems I’ve finally found benefits to getting older and having no true friends who are gamers. All this D&D kerfuffle that’s got so many people’s undergarments in a twist doesn’t really bother me all that much.

Looks like I picked the right time to quit eating popcorn.

Scarab Sages

I’ve really got to remind myself to clean my wife’s crap out of the pantry more often. I filled up 1-1/2 trash bags with expired crap. Some of it dated back to 2014.

Scarab Sages

I had to drop the wife off at the airport today, and the drive took us past the office building I used to work in. Sadly, my old company’s name was no longer on the side of the building. Thus, I could not perform my usual ritual (involving the middle finger and some choice language).

Still, I had a good laugh, as I remembered the company shrank so much it had to move to a smaller office. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch of a-holes.

Scarab Sages

Nasty weather today. Chilly. Rainy. Windy. Radio was saying we might have flooding in some places.

Aaaaaannnndddd….the power just went out.

Aaaaannndddd….the power just came back on.

Scarab Sages

It was off just long enough to stop the dryer. Had my wet jeans in there from a doctor visit I just came back from.

Scarab Sages

Getting old sucks.

Scarab Sages

At least for me anyway.

Scarab Sages

Watched the movie Volunteers last night, for the first time in a few decades. Tom Hanks. Rita Wilson. John Candy. Weird, but fun.

Scarab Sages

At least it’s a sunshiny day today.

Scarab Sages

Took the kids to a seafood restaurant last night as a treat (and to make dinner easier on me). It was the first time in awhile I had seafood on a Friday for dinner.

Growing up, seafood was EVERY Friday at dinner. Good times.

Scarab Sages

After dinner, we headed over to the pharmacy to pick up my prescription. The young lady behind the counter asked if the kidlets were my grandchildren.

My response was……restrained.

Scarab Sages

Then, as a treat to myself, I watched Conan the Barbarian. The one with Schwarzenegger. Great movie. Not a great Conan movie.

Scarab Sages

I’ve long hoped the Universe would one day smile upon us all and give us a Conan movie (or maybe TV series) more faithful to REH’s original stories. That hope is pretty much dead these days.

I just don’t see much chance of getting something as awesome as a faithful Conan adaptation. Too many pansies in Hollywood (and the country at large).

Scarab Sages

I watched the Jason Momoa Conan once. Once. At the time, I thought it was mostly horrid, with one or maybe two brief shining moments. It’s available on HBOMax, so I’ve been debating whether I might give it another try.

Scarab Sages

And now it looks like we’re set for several days of rain. Godsdamnit!

Scarab Sages

It’s mornings like this I curse my wife for neglecting to get the girl’s Kindle fixed. Headphones won’t work on it at present, and so when she watches it I either have to send her in another room, or put up with the audio from the inane videos she watches.

Scarab Sages

I’m back to posting more in this Off Topic section because there isn’t as much worth commenting on back in the Entertainment section.

Scarab Sages

As always, boredom is one of my chief enemies. It almost makes me wish I had friends to do things with.

Scarab Sages

And the dog is going into heat again. So the house will start looking like a crime scene.

I should have gotten her fixed, but that would require (a) money, and (b) we risk her tearing someone’s face off at the vets office.

Scarab Sages

Because my dog truly is MY dog. She dislikes and distrusts nearly everyone outside her immediate family.

Scarab Sages

She wasn’t always like that. In part, I blame the mask wearers. When those showed up is when she first started getting more aggressive around other people.

Scarab Sages

I am bored.

Scarab Sages

Partly it’s because my routine is being disrupted. The wife is out of town, so I’ve got to handle everything with the kidlets. Usually we split the effort on certain things.

Scarab Sages

I think, during the upcoming week while the children are at school, it might be time to start surreptitiously throwing things away around the house.

Scarab Sages

I’ve been trying (once again) to get the boy to expand his diet. So far, it has not been successful. I just wish he wouldn’t be so afraid about trying new things. Even I wasn’t that scared of food as a lad.

It is, occasionally, frustratingly pathetic.

Scarab Sages

Lunch meat! Is it so much to ask that he eat f$@&ing lunch meat?!?

Or maybe hamburgers and hot dogs? Ye gods!!!

Scarab Sages

I watched the first two episodes of that new HBO series The Last of Us. I understand it’s based off a video game for PlayStation. I’m not big on video games these days, but I’m tempted to play the first game. Not the second one, though. I’ve heard that one sucks.

Scarab Sages

Watched Conan the Destroyer, just for kicks. I’m ashamed to say I was unaware the original story for the movie had been written by Roy Thomas Gerry Conway. When the didn’t like the way the script writer changed things, they released their version as a graphic novel.

There are copies of said graphic novel available, if you’re willing to spend between $55 and $355 dollars.

Scarab Sages

Stoopid rain.

Scarab Sages

Still, the only place I was planning to go today was the grocery store. I was considering picking up some hamburgers for dinner tonight.

Trying to expand the boy’s diet.

Scarab Sages

At least the mystery pain in my back seems to be gone today.

Scarab Sages

Of course, it’s been replaced by the tingling in my hands again. Might be arthritis of some kind.

Which would be just the kind of thing The Universe would do to me.

Scarab Sages

Getting old really sucks.

Scarab Sages

Sometimes, I think my epitaph will be something like “I can’t believe I didn’t think of that earlier”.

Scarab Sages

Miserable day. Cold and wet.

Perfect day to have to drop money on my damned sprinkler system again.

Stupid cold weather.

Scarab Sages

Well, if either of my kids decide not to go to college (which I might encourage), I’ll suggest they become plumbers. Or maybe electricians. Or welders. That way, they’ll stand a great chance of making a good living.
