Wines of the Inner Sea

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Help me out, folks, I'm not sure if this is noted in text anywhere; do we have anything in setting on where the finest wines in the Inner Sea come from, or failing that, where you'd imagine them to be from?

Wines are sometimes mentioned in books about three Mediterranean-like countries - Cheliax, Andoran and Taldor.

Carpendon in Andoran and Corentyn in Cheliax are two which spring to mind.

Excellent, thanks!

I recall a PFS scenario (can't remember which) where the Venture-Captain Sheila Heidmarch is serving fancy food to the group during the briefing, and Chelaxian red wine was among the offerings.

And at the other end of the spectrum, Sauerton Red wine (Andoran) is famously bad.

Based on regional geography, Cheliax is sitting in the perfect "Wine Zone", it also has the right Topography.
This would be analogous to the Pinot regions of France and Andalusia.

Nidal is well placed too, but that one isn't likely.

The area North of Sandpoint but South of Riddleport is not unlikely to grow hardier types while the area West and North of Riddleport might be a decent spot for "Ice Wines".
I'd say the Germanic grapes could be from here, Riesling and Gewurtztraminer.

The area directly between Mivon and Pitax is specifically called out as being a major wine producing region, it's one of the primary reasons they go to war with one another, control of the old vines located there. Currently the Aldori Houses in Exile have it and they do not relinquish control often. This is likely one of Mivon's major exports.

The River Kingdoms have the right conditions, but with the way land changes hands there, it's not unlikely that "Old Vines" are hard to tend. However farmers get high station and anyone who can hold a vineyard would get rich in this region.

Grapes will basically grow anywhere. Getting the "good" grapes to take hold is hard to do. Taldor, Qadira, Geb, Galt, Molthune and the Lake Encarthan states are good candidates for decent wine.

This actually should be a book its own.

But how can you tell, if you got given only prestidigitated water?

I wonder if you missed any others as well.

Maybe you should check?

Way ahead of ya. I've got my afternoon, evening, morning, afternoon, and maybe another evening all planned out!

(Literally no one cares at all, but I'll say in my defense that I didn't start comprehensively noting stuff like that until sometime in Second Darkness/Legacy of Fire)

Expanding on the Ustalavic wine - most of the county of Caliphas is mentioned as having many vineyards.

o.O I thought that I was the only one that got into the wee details like this. I have the title Witchy the fluff queen around here because of my frinky details...not that this IS frinky details, but you haven't gotten into making up authors of penny dreadfuls, top brand cigars and regional recipes either (that you're admitting to anyway ;) )

That being said being able to toss out a wine list to my players when they hit the high end inn is a lot of fun.

But I don't WANNAAAAAAAAAA! (said in a Taldan accent)

Then there was the session I played in where the McGuffin turned out to be a bottle of Sarusanian red.

We decided it must have been a shiraz.

I would love a book on Golarian alcohols.

Any chance we could get that full list?

I know I read several pathfinder APs or modules that referenced Pitax Red as a well known and popular wine.

Sorting previous list by value:

-Bottle of fine wine from Ustalav (500 gp)
-Bottle of 4663-vintage wine from the Terverius Wineries of Southern Cheliax (300 gp)
-Mendevian icewine (250 gp)

Hmm. Sounds like Cheliax may be a place to seek out both value and quality, while Ustalav is where you go for overpriced pretentiousness (surprise!).

I'm just going to say it: Am I the only one who thinks people who don't care at all about these details (and coined the dismissive term "fluff" to refer to it) really don't understand the game? They certainly ruin it for me....

No, especially if they make up their own fluff. It's just the interpretation of who's story you want to play, the campaign setting authors' or your own.

Bringing the thread back into alignment, I think someone missed Icecap Ale from a recent player companion book.

You bring ALE to a wine tasting?!? You uncouth... ruffian! My delicate sensibilities shatter!

What if it's a wine-testing in Ale?

If you're talking about powergamers/"munchkins", I totally agree with you. Those guys ruin the whole game when they play a caster, take all the stuff needed to make it OP, and then pretty much make all the other players useless :/
