Jay's 'dying' anyway... What to do with him is redundant. Frankly I expect it ot happen any moment now. I have zero doubt that this season is going to end with him running himself to death.
I honestly, don't understand all this talk about needing to get faster... if it doesn't help? When it starts with "YES!!! I'm as fast/faster then my enemy!!!" then follows up with 'I have a plan!!!' I tend to roll my eyes.
A complicated plan is needed when your the underdog... like before.
NOW??? NOW the plan is 'run faster then him, and punch him in the face... repeatedly. Much like he schooled you a dozen episodes back... it's YOUR turn now.
Maybe not so dramatic... but HIGHLY effective. The psychological warfare seemed so... redundant. .

There were sooooo many things wrong with this episode. Most have been covered here. By comparison, this is very minor, but...
I gather the trip to Earth-CBS took place when he briefly winked out while running back to STAR Labs. On arrival, Barry said "I'm back. How long was I gone?" and then never mentioned that he had in fact reached another Earth, if not the one they were shooting for.
He even stood there and said nothing while Wells argued there was no way to reopen a portal and no evidence dimensional travel would be possible again.
Granted, the two series are being kept separate despite the "Worlds' Finest" episode of Supergirl, but that's just bad writing. What kind of a-hole does Barry have to be to (a) withhold the certain knowledge that dimensional travel is still possible, if not yet controllable; and (b) not tell Cisco about Supergirl?

My family loves The Flash, but last night's episode was a big disappointment, especially after so much time off. ** spoiler omitted **
I really hope they can turn this around before the season finale. I don't want The Flash to go the way of Legends of Tomorrow, which I quit watching in disgust at how incompetent the heroes are.
So much this...
Barry always acted like an idiot in combat scenes, since the writers are apparently incapable of coming up with a believable challenge for a speedster... But the heroes were always quite competent the rest of the time.
And yet... This episode craps all over that and makes no only Barry, but everyone else a complete moron!
*grunt*

Conflict resolution is a consistently weak point in the show's writing. On the other hand, the character moments are often really excellent. For as much as I agree with all the above criticisms of this past episode, I loved Hunter's haughtiness and his smirking in the lab, all of Joe's scenes with Wally were excellent, and Barry's pep-talk with Cisco was super-great.

I'm still annoyed at Zoom's stupid victory, though... I makes no sense. -.-'
At this point they might as well change the intro to "My name is Barry Allen... And I am among the top 10 fastest men alive... Probably."
-.-'
Well, if the narration is from a future Barry Allen talking about his adventures from the past, he might be the fastest man alive then...after getting EVAN FASTR!

I don't think so... His voice is still the same and he speaks in present tense. At one point, back in season 1 when he first met Reverse Flash, he even says "(...) And I am not the fastest man alive (...)".

As some point Barry needs to learn that simply being able to run faster might not always be the enough...he needs to learn how to actually fight, and use the other aspects of the Speed Force powers beyond just running fast.
Even if he's a bit faster, Zoom can still absolutely man-handle him in terms of a physical fight.

Hey quit knocking on the guy that wants to go faster. I mean that's how we got Supergirl into the mix! :p
Also I don't think Jay Garrick = Hunter Zolomon so much as Hunter took over the identity but not the actual PERSON of Jay Garrick.
Iron Mask folks! I'm positive more so than before, Jay Garrick is behind the Mask.

Wanting to go faster is OK. Focusing solely on running faster to the exclusion of everything else is kinda stupid.
It'd be like a Pathfinder 20th level wizard, but the only spells in his spellbook were 10 versions of Fireball scaled up or down to be appropriate for that spell level.

Hrmmm….
I’m getting pretty tired of Barry always needing the help of Team Flash to solve a problem. Yeah, it’s nice to have a support network, but just once I’d like him to show how damned awesome he is supposed to be by beating the villain of the week entirely on his own.
More references to Jessie Quick. Methinks she’s going to end up being the Flash of Earth-2. Which is cool. She’s a hottie, and smart as a whip.
I’m starting to like Wally more. He definitely showed he’s got character and is (at heart) a really good guy).
Caitlin and Evil-Caitlin. That was interesting. What’s her face did a really good job with the dual roles. And that scene where Zoom impales Killer Frost to death was pretty well done.
The dude playing Zoom/Hunter is doing a pretty good job as well. He looks to be slowly loosing it – getting more and more chaotic. And, of course, now he’s decided to go all Ghengis Khan on the multiverse. Good times.
After this bullshit story of Flash so easily and stupidly giving up his powers, I really hope the payoff is worth it.
Aberzombie |
Aber,
I'm convinced that the attempt to give Barry back his powers has a similar effect like Flashpoint did, it almost kills him.
Yeah, judging from the preview for next week, I think you are correct. It'll almost kill him, perhaps burn him really badly before he heals, and maybe even give make him a bit faster.

The Man in the Iron Mask could be Hunter's Dad. Or Jay Garrick.
That really needs to be cleared up by the end of the season. It's getting tedious. Mysteries are fun to speculate about but they should be advanced over the course of a story; in his case, we know no more than we did at his first appearance. He's still a guy in an iron mask, held by Zoom for unknown reasons. The one clue to his identity -- tapping out "JAY" in prison code -- gets us nowhere because it remains uncertain whether he was identifying himself or asking about someone else.
Did Barry not tell Caitlin about that? All the time she was in Zoom's lair, Iron Mask never managed to communicate a single word to her? Is he an idiot? Since she can see him, maybe he should just try drawing letters in the air? Or injuring himself and writing on the transparent wall in blood?

I think Barry will get his power back, but this will be the perfect time for Jessie and Wally to have their Origin event.
I disagree. The main character is a speedster. The big bads of both seasons so far have been speedsters. And they've had a speedster both as the villain of the week, and a supporting character speedster (Jay before the reveal).
Too damn many of them, they don't need to throw two more on this early in the game.
Damon Griffin |
Flash comic is full of speedsters.
And about to become more so, according to the July/August solicitations from Diamond:
Flash #2: "The Flash trains novice speedster August Heart to help the people of Central City..."
Flash #3: "...dozens of innocent people gain super-speed! But not all of them are heroic, and it will take everything the Flash and August have..."

How can influence things - Wally being a speedster will let Barry play the part of mentor rather than pupil, and in the comics Jesse gave up her speed to give Wally a boost to fight some uber-speedster villain. She might not keep it, or she might only help with Zoom and go back to Earth 2 and be a recurring guest star.

GAHHHHH.....
So the whole plot of this episode... is that Barry got lucky with his powers.. but not everyone did. Griffin aged himself a whole lot (maybe to death, not sure the verdict on that one...) The particle accelerator ruined his life...
And not just his. Out of the whole particle explosion 'incident' There have been what? 3 heroes and 40 villains? Wells experiment ruined the city... it was quiet and peaceful before he did that...
immedieately on rescue decides to create another particle accelerator explosion.!!!
If at least 5 people on the team don't jump on wells about how BAD an idea that is i'm going to be pretty annoyed.
Not to mention that I really HATED the particle accelerator explaination. Even WITH that, at least they INCLUDED the lightning bolt and cabinent of chemicals... I somehow doubt they are going to include that in experiment #2 >.<
phantom1592 |
Most origins are stupid when looked to closely. Barry's was actually pretty good. They gave a 'scientific' reason for the change, and enough mystery that it shouldn't be easily duplicated.
Compared to GA Flash's 'inhaled hard water'?
Batman... Bat flew in his window... time to dress like a bat...
Superman ALien that looks, sounds, acts exactly like humans..
Spider-man's radioactive spider..
Daredevil's Radiaton in the eyes...
Hulk's 'Gamma bomb'...
heck, Electro was an electrician who was working on some powerlines when he got zapped and became electro... instead of... instant death.
Flash's was cool because it was that one in a billion chance that him... those specific chemicals... and a lightning bolt were all in the same place at the same time.
I always considered his one of the best origins... Though I do think Hal Jordan gets the best one.
phantom1592 |
Ghost Rider's origin is pretty cool...
And Batman's origin isn't a bat flying through the window... That's just how he chose his costume's theme.
Well, loved one killed by a criminal is the most overused origin in the history of comics... or maybe even fiction itself. Certainly stretches from batman to spider-man to daredevil back to Shakespeare's stuff himself.
Ghost Rider's origin is ok... but GR has had so many retcons and reimaginings... that the character has REALLY been damaged in the process. Between Satan, Mephisto, Zarathos, Johnny Blaze, Danny Ketch, amulets, angels... etc. etc... it's tough to even look at the character anymore.
Thomas Seitz |
Regardless of how Barry gets his powers, his regaining them is usually not something done lightly. Mostly because while the particle accelerator bit explains his ability to move between dimensions, it still has to take in account a) variability of lighting discharges and b) chemical changes done thanks to...well chemicals!

Batman was one of the first when you look at the timeline.

Actually, the first one was publicized as supposed to be controlled, but the reality was that reverse flash wanted it to be uncontrolled and big enough to zap Barry halfway across town in the police lab so that he becomes the Flash.

Well... Same difference, then...
If it's something as lame as "Hunter's father", this will be the most disappointing revelation I've seen in any CW series so far.
After Hunter saying "You wouldn't believe if I told you" and all the talks of "it'll blow your [the viwer's] mind"... I expect the reveal to be at least halfway decent!

Are there any DC characters with Medusa- or gaze-like powers?
Off the top of my head, the only two I can think of are Psycho Pirate and Johnny Sorrow.
The second Pyscho Pirate had a Medusa Mask which was capable of projecting emotions onto people. So, in truth, it was the mask that had the power.
Johnny Sorry had been sucked into some kind of Lovecraftian dimension and returned transformed. After that, he had a mask which concealed his new, more monstrous face. This face could kill people who looked at it, if I recall correctly.
