GM Dak - Shattered Star recruitment

Recruitment

1 to 50 of 115 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

So I've been running a VTT game of Shattered Star and most of my other play by posts have slowed a bit. As such I am planning to start up a Shattered Star PbP game.

Here are the details for character creation:

Starting Level: 1st level

Stats: 20 Point Buy.

Alignment: Non-Evil

HP: Max for 1st level; after that take the average.

Classes: Core Material available on the PRD will be accepted.

Races: Core + Aasimar/Tiefling.

Drawbacks: I will allow 1 Drawback but you need to make sure you incorporate it!

Traits: Two, one being a campaign trait. So with a drawback you have potential for three traits.

Wealth: 150 gp.

Downtime: This will be dependent on the players, but likely won't occur very much.

Submitting a Character:
Create a profile/alias and include relevant information and mechanics inside. For an example of how to format your profile see this DEMO Profile

Be sure to include the following in your profile, preferably at the bottom and in spoilers:

Description - Please provide a description of your character as if someone were seeing them for the first time. If you have a picture reference, please include it.

Personality - Self explanatory.

Background - Your character is not a hero of great renown, at least not yet. Feel free to go as in depth as you'd like on this section, but keep in mind that you are level one, and while above the cut of your average soldier or town guard, you haven't done any great wonders yet. You are all newish agents of the Pathfinder Society, you have shown great skill in your training and have been recommended by your mentors for this assignment. If you plan to be from Marnimar/Varisia I expect you have a rank in Know. Local.

Your characters will be able to interact prior to game start in the Gameplay Thread, partly as a way to have fun and pass the time, partly to help me evaluate your posting style/frequency/character personality. The pre-game RP will be taking place on your trip from Absalom to Magnimar. I will open this up once recruitment has finished.

Posting requirements: I will generally post at least once a day, most times twice a day, excluding weekends. There may be times where I post every other day depending on my schedule. I would expect players to be able to post a minimum of once a day. Of course, things come up and as long as you let me know ahead of time I will GM PC your character as safely as possible.

I will close recruitment Feb. 14th at the latest. If there is a high response I may potentially close it as early as Feb. 7th. We will start things up on the weekend. I will be running this with 4-5 characters.

Note I will provide Chronicles for PFS credit upon completion of the appropriate sections of the AP.

Never tried a Shattered Star game before...

Sure, I'll give it a try!

I'll have something statted up soon.

EDIT: Incidentally, what are your policies on archetypes?

I'm ok with most archetypes, though no 3rd party.

Alright then.

One more question: you're allowing aasimars and tieflings to apply. Would playing a variant bloodline of aasimar or tiefling be alright with you?

I'm interested. However, I want to say up front, that I will (very likely at least) be deploying soon, and there will be a short period of time I can not post, or even have internet access. I would not have an issue having the DM rp me, and there is a chance that I might not be able to post. It's unlikely. In the past, I have had internet access regularly, but it could happen.

If that is not a problem, I'll have a character stated up soon. Outside of what you posted above is this going to be a PFS like game? As far as restriction guidelines.

Shadow Lodge

I'm thinking a Aasimar (or human) Cleric. (healer/buffer/reach)

Human Cleric- Profile for stats

I am ok with alternate heritages and racial traits, no alternate abilities though.

I'm ok with absences if I know about them upfront as long as it isn't like your going to be gone for a couple months or something.

As for the game, there aren't any of the normal PFS restrictions as we are playing this as an AP and you would simply be getting credit for the PFS sections you completed that you could then apply to one of your characters.

GM Dak wrote:

Alternate abilities? What do you mean by that?

Judah is an Oracle of the Dark Tapestry who fills the rouge/scout role of a party nicely, and also offers up extra divine support.

He isn't a typical oracle, he's more of an oracle in the historical sense. He's been somehow linked with a great power far beyond his comprehension, and he doesn't get much of a choice in the matter.

Given that he is connected to the Dark Tapestry, he's not happy at all with the situation. He feels like he's going mad. He gets glimmers and hints into the minds of unfathomable creatures from the depths of space, and he doesn't like anything about the things he manages to comprehend.

Judah is a coward, and a wretch who hasn't had a good night sleep in months. He has contemplated suicide, but he can't bring himself to do it. He's finally decided to try to follow his visions and learn more in hopes that he can figure out more about his link with the things in his mind. More than anything he wants to be rid of it all.

Thematically, Judah draws inspiration from movies like In The Mouth Of Madness and Hellraiser. He's an unwitting pawn trying to fight against the destiny that has been chosen for him. He's going to start out as a pathetic wretch, but as he learns more he will either become better at using his power to his own ends, or his power will get better at using him. Maybe both.

In combat, Judah will be doing a lot of hiding and summoning creatures to protect him. At first I plan on playing up the idea that Judah isn't summoning things on purpose. They just come when he is in danger.

Out of combat, Judah is a capable scout, trap breaker and healer.

As for me, personally, I've been wanting to play this character in this Adventure Path for more than a year now. Both Shattered Star games I've submitted him to I've gotten into, but neither got very far before ending. I am extremely reliable as a player, and very enthusiastic about this game. I'm willing to change whatever I need to to suit your vision of the game. Really, I just want to play. :)

Please let me know what you think. I'm pretty sure his character sheet is complete, though he has been through two other games so there may be residual information from them that I didn't catch when I brought him back to basics to submit here.

@DM:
So, I went with the campaign trait Alabaster Outcast, and I was thinking about really playing up the family political outcast side, and sort of going for a prodigal son returns, (in disguise until later). Is that an issue? Sort of a mixture of Sturm Brightblade and Aragorn. The other question I had is that this trait gives me a couple things. Nobles outfit, 200gp item, etc. . . I was wondering if you would mind me "selling" it all except the signet ring (family ring) and instead "purchasing" a wayfinder a that other item. The Wayfinder is (for Pathfinders) 250gp, so a bit outside of the price range, but by selling the other gear, I think I actually loose money. And if you allow it, would it be possible for that Wayfinder to be something I don't actually have, but can find once returning to the area after some long years? I was wanting it to be one of the last important items maybe his father left, but whatever ordeal got him ousted from the area took place before he could get his father's wayfinder, and it's sort of a minor quest.

Lantern Lodge

@GM Dak, would the Advanced Class Guide playtest classes be legal. Regardless, I'm interested!

You can swap out the spell like ability for a different ability.

Oh and dotting for interest.

EDIT: Nevermind, I can't find a trait that fits the character I want to play. Good luck to all.

Grand Lodge

Here is the working character. I went with Paladin instead of Cleric, as someone already posted a Cleric.

I need to read up on the SS guide and I'll have a backstory and some fluff on the way. Probably tomorrow.

A few inspirational pics

I'm going to see about posting an archivist bard. He's a superstitious native of Magnimar who was caught up in the Night Scales gang when Sheila caught wind of his potential, snared him, and had him shipped off to Absalom for training. Now returning to the city, he's excited to be working for the society, but nervous about meeting up with his old gang and hopes Sheila soon finds an assignment for him elsewhere in Varisia.

I'll build out the personality, background, and description as the recruitment proceeds. He would definitely be a skills character, especially knowledge, but able to provide some magical support and perhaps a tiny bit of skill at arms.

Thinking about playing my flag bard build for this campaign. Things this build relies on, just wondering if you'd allow them when they become relevant:

Arcane Duelist(Bard Archetype)

Flagbearer Feat

Banner of the Ancient Kings Item(Obviously not affordable until higher levels)

Battle Herald PrC(If we get there)

This character utilizes the Flagbearer feat along with inspire courage to strengthen his allies while using his Longspear and Combat Reflexes to dish out damage of his own. Race would be Angel Blooded Aasimar.

@DragonCat I don't have the book for reference right now, but there is a table or alternate abilities. The alternate heritages are like the musetouched etc and the alternate traits are like the scion of humanity. These I am ok with, the other table of alternate abilities I don't want. (I'll look up the table specifically when I have a chance.)

DM Beckett:
All that sounds ok with me

@David For now I'm going to say no Advanced Classes simply because I haven't really had a chance to look at them.

So for reference here are the current applicants:

Completed
The Priest of Sarenrea (Cleric - Cast Focused?) [Need a name :P]
Judah Locke (Oracle - Skill/Summon)
St. Germain (Paladin - Melee)

In Progress
Bard - Skill focused (Caius Bassi)
Cleric - Heal/Reach (DM Beckett)

Presenting for your consideration: Valai Blackrune!
I just need to add her equipment now; the rest should be completed.

^^ I hope we'll all be playing this game together. What I've read about it seems intriguing! Also, it's my first time using a Drawback, and I'm curious as to how it'll all work out.

@GM Dak
Ah. Okay, I see what you're getting at.

Scarab Sages Contributor

I am having interest for this!

Maybe I can bust out my rogue/alchemist/shadowdancer...

Lantern Lodge

@GM Dak: Rats, wanted to try a Hunter build :P

Given that... thinking monk/martial artist going Mantis Style.

Give me an hour to flesh out the guy!

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I am DM Beckett, and I decided to go Paladin instead because I noticed a little after I posted that, someone else posted another Cleric, (and an Oracle), and figured I wouldn't try to compete.

:)

Lantern Lodge

@GM Dak: One more question/request: Would Prestige Classes from Paths of Prestige be allowed? There are two I have in mind:

Hellknight Signifier: Always wanted to try this prestige out and the group could use some heavy arcane.
Champion of Irori: Always wanted to give the prestige class a shot!

DM:
So the basic idea I had that (like 50 years ago), my family had been a prominent family in Magnimar, and through some sort of rivalry, they where mostly assassinated in a coup. I, having fairly recently come of adventuring age, decided against becoming a Pathfinder like my father/family expected, and after a quarrel, had gotten ready to travel to Mendev to join the crusade (again 50ish years ago). Basically I got lucky and just wasn't there when the others where attacked, most being murdered, but others fleeing to the winds. When I returned, the house was basically in ruin, and I lost track of everyone that might have survived. So I went on and joined the crusade, (getting some training to level 1 like you said), but eventually found enough was enough. I joined up with the Silver Crusade, (not really the Pathfinders per se), and as much as I was against it, have been sent back to Varisia.
---
While at the crusade, I found faith in Ragathiel, (both a good choice for crusaders, but also one of the patrons of Magnimar), whose doctrine teaches wrath and battle, but to channel it for righteous causes rather than for it's own sake, and the vengeful feeling I had against those that attacked and murdered my family long ago have given way to trying to be a defender and champion of the weak, pure, and helpless. In fact, I may not even know who is responsible, or if they are even still in power.
---
I was intending this to be more of a backstory and motivation than something I "expect" you to incorporate, so trying to eave it as vague as I can while still having meaning. I had two questions though.
---
1.) I was wanting to keep some of this a secret, but not entirely sure how that would work with the AP. I'm perfectly fine with it coming up, or not, but I would like to keep some of this off my character sheet. Is that okay?
---
2.) Kind of like I mentioned above, I am not sure where this AP will go, so I wasn't sure if you had any suggestions (or restrictions) on which family or rival family would work, (or would not mess things up later)?

---
I did place a rank in Know Local (didn't see your post on that originally, it just seemed to make sense and is pretty common in PFS, ha ha), so I figured that all this time away would make sense. I also took Thassilonian, (again didn't even notice the suggestion, it's just common in PFS), which I was figuring would make a bit of sense why the PFS might be interested in me, (they wouldn't know my family history, I think, that's up to you).

Submitting Omoro for consideration again. Full disclosure: I played him in a previous run of Shattered Star about a year or so ago. He only got to second level before it ended - we were on our way to getting the second big objective item before it all ended. If selected, I'll drop him back down to first level.

Description: Omoro is taller than most tengu, but that's where non-tengu stop being able to describe him. Like virtually all of his people, he has black plumage and a matching beak, with beady black eyes that look like deep shining wells. When listening intently, his head lists to one side. He usually doesn't wear much in the way of affectation - that sort of thing tends to get you recognized - but he does keep a gold dragon pendant around his neck.

Personality: When not on a mission, Omoro is prone to introspection. He is deeply faithful, and his quiet words are usually filled with deep insight. When on a mission, though, he becomes insularly focused. Nothing but the mission, and the completion of it, matters. He tends not to have many close friends, but those who he accepts into his life he will fight and kill for.

Backstory:

"You offend me with this tribute, swine!", Lo Ban Wo shouted. He kicked the peasant before him, sending the basket of silks tumbling into the mud after its owner. Around him, his men chuckled at the poor peasant's plight. "My lord, Ping Tai Xhou, surely deserves better than the trifles you offer!"

The peasant groveled before Lo Ban Wo, and his children followed suit. "Please, lord, this is all we have to offer. We have not had time to replant our fields since your invasion a few months back, and can only offer the silks we have brought. Please, give us some more time, and we shall pay tribute to Lord Xhou as he deserves."

Lo Ban Wo scoffed at the peasant's plight. "Perhaps, muddweller. We shall take these silks for now, but they are a paltry tribute. We will have to take something else as collateral." He gestured for his men to grab the children. The peasant attempted to resist, but a blow to the head sent him tumbling back into the mud. "They will be returned to you in three months' time, assuming your tribute then will be enough to purchase them, once you have paid your debt to Lord Xhou. Take him away!" Lo Ban Wo's men grabbed the peasant by his arms, and drug him out of the encampment; the rest took the screaming children further into the camp, towards the prison.

"Put them to work in the morning. They can pay off their father's debt. All except the eldest." A terrible smile crept across Lo Ban Wo's face. "She can begin paying off the debt tonight."

* * * * *

Lo Ban Wo finished off the last of the wine. It was a foul vintage, but it got the job done. He had shed his armor, and reclined on a pallet in his personal tent. He grinned as he heard the cries of a woman - one of his men was bringing the eldest to his tent for the evening pleasantries. The tentflap opened, and a guard shoved the girl into the tent. She was no more than sixteen summers of age, a perfect flower of youth. Lo Ban Wo rose, approaching her. "Leave us," he said to the guard. "I will need to...interrogate her. Personally."

The guard made no motion to leave, and Lo Ban Wo looked up from his bounty towards him. "I said leave us!"

In response, the guard collapsed to the floor. A growing pool of red around him revealed his reason for staying. Lo Ban Wo started, and glanced around for his attacker. He reached for his sword, but it was conspicuously absent. "What is happening?"

"You have been marked for death, Lo Ban Wo," came a voice from the shadows. "And from what I have seen, the only one who will miss your death is your lord, Ping Tai Xhou."

Lo Ban Wo grabbed a knife at his belt, scanning the room for his attacker. The girl cowered in silence, backing away from her captor. "Show yourself, assassin!"

"In due time. Don't you want to know why you are being killed? It's an honor - you have been too successful. Lord Xhou will have to replace you with a different lieutenant, and that replacement will likely be less competent. In six months time, this land will belong to the people you took it from again. And your name will be forgotten to all."

At that moment, the shadows parted, and a small form darted out from them. Lo Ban Wo gurgled as a blade protruded from his chest, and he fell to the ground next to his guard. He tried to shout for his guards, but he found his voice suddenly silenced.

"Can't speak? That would be the poison I slipped in your wine. Paralyzes the larynx. I knew you wouldn't call for the guards first - you're arrogant enough to think you had a chance. This is where you die, Lo Ban Wo. No one shall mourn your passing."

The sword came down again, and Lo Ban Wo's head was removed cleanly from his shoulders.

The shadowy figure approached the girl. "Go. I have already released your siblings from their imprisonment. I will cover your escape." He reached a hand towards her to help her up.

She accepted it. "Who are you? Who has saved me from this brigand?"

The figure came into enough light that his black plumage and beak could be seen. "Names are unimportant. Only deeds are remembered. Now go!"

* * * * *

"You have been successful in your assignment, Omoro," said Hiroru Saibankan, master ninja of the Golden Dragon clan. "With Lo Ban Wo's death, Lord Xhou's men will be rudderless for a time. We will be able to harry their forces far more effectively, now that their head has been removed."

Omoro remained kneeling before his master. "I thank you, lord. I only wish to serve."

"I know," Hiroru said. "And that is why I have chosen you for a unique mission. Rise, and be seated. There is much we must discuss."

The tengu rose, and sat down next to his master. The ninja master regarded his avian pupil for a time. "You are familiar with the Pathfinders, yes, Omoro?"

"Of course, lord. Has one of their number been marked for death?"

"Undoubtedly," Saibankan replied, waving a hand in dismissal. "But not by us. No, there has been word sent from distant Varisia that the Pathfinders are in need of assistance. We have learned that Venture-Captain Amara Li has sent word for Tian Xia's Pathfinders to congregate in Magnimar. It is my desire to send you there, and act as our eyes and ears within the Pathfinders. There has been much happening in Varisia of late, and though we have largely been insulated from it in the east, we can no longer afford to remain apart from that world. Go to Magnimar, pledge yourself to the Pathfinders, and assist them in whatever they are investigating."

Omoro was silent for a time. "Why me, lord? Certainly, there are other operatives who could be sent."

"There are, Omoro," Saibankan nodded. "But they are not suited for such a high-profile job as this. This requires a relative unknown, such as yourself."

"Very well, master. When do I leave?"

"At dawn. Oh, and take this." Saibankan handed Omoro a book. "It will help get you acquainted with some of Varisia's most important historical figures. You have a way with tongues, so I expect you will master its contents by the time your voyage is complete."

Omoro glanced at the book, and ran his fingers over the curious seven-pointed star on its cover. "Yes, lord. I live to serve."

Dragoncat here. Allow me to present my submission for Shattered Star:

Mach Star, a tiefling rogue off the streets of Magnimar. Or the graveyard, depending on who you ask.

Sorry to keep you waiting!

Hello! Here are my entries

Primary
Mathias Kelythis, Hellknight in Training.

Alternate
Miana of Irori, seeker of good and personal perfection.

@David I am fine with PrC from any core book, just not 3rd Party.

@Alistus I did miss your post, sorry. As above, as long as it is core I am OK with it.

@Omoro Sorry no Tengu :) but good story if you want to alter race?

St. Germain:
1) That is fine. 2)Let me get back to you. It is mainly based around Varisia and I know you could potentially have issues with the Scarzni, but I'll make sure there isn't anything else that might fit better.

Updated player list:
Completed
The Priest of Sarenrea (Cleric - Cast Focused?) [Need a name :P]
Judah Locke (Oracle - Skill/Summon)
St. Germain (Paladin - Melee)
Mach Star (Rogue - Skill/Face?)
Valai Blackrune (Wizard - Caster)

In Progress
Bard - Skill focused (Caius Bassi)
Rogue/Alch - ? (UllarWarlord)
Omoro (Ninja) [Need different race]

Did you find anything I should change, GM Dak, or is this build - and equipment - okay?

@Valai At first glance everything looks good. I'll be doing a more in-depth review once I narrow selections down.

Silver Crusade

As another wizard has already posted, here's my paladin that will go monk upon level 2.

Role: Face, Melee (eventual mobile)

* Outside of the box, I have no idea what cast-focused means. Healer...OK? The opposite would be front line Tank? Whatever role you assign me is fine.

Grand Lodge

It's more like what's you intent to play? As a Cleric with the Fire domain, you could play a blasty caster type cleric. You could play a healer, too, or both.

Never played Shattered Star and interested. Not sure on a PC yet... I'll update shortly after I've had a chance to look over some things.

Grand Lodge

Thanks St. Germain

Excellent, ill put the build together and make an alias shortly.

Looks like you've got yourself a good turnout, GM!

Sczarni

i am very interested in playing a human ranger for this campaign, i can post multiple times a day and are constantly on the boards

I really (like REALLY) would like to play SS. I've been trying to get someone to run it for a while.

If you would consider me I present Dimral Windstrider, a Shoanti ranger of the Skoan-Quah (skull clan) and hunter of those who would defile the honored dead's rest.

His full BG will soon follow.

As for his role he is melee but with trapfinding (being a trapper) and offers the party some decent ranged abilities too (once he'll gain the money to buy himself a ranged weapon, that is) besides the usual ranger's bag of tricks.

Lantern Lodge

I could make Omoro something else, but I really like him as is. I'll think about a different character instead, and see what tickles my fancy.

For your kind perusal, Petronicus Krupt, Chelaxian nonpareil of a**holes, a fine addition to any party, in my not-so-humble opinion.

Doting for interest. I'll work in a concept and post it here.

A quick aside:

I'm capable of posting several times a day, and weekends are no problem for me.

Submitting Matthias for your consideration. Note that Rogue is not his favored class, and it is actually alchemist. He will start taking levels in it come level 2.

I am quite capable of posting multiple times a day, even on weekends.

He is mostly a skill character, but he can hold his own in combat (especially after a few levels).

All thanks for the applications, at this rate I think I may be closing down recruitment on Thur to make my selections and start things up on Friday.

Updated player list:
Completed
Ra (Cleric - Caster/Healer)
Judah Locke (Oracle - Skill/Summon)
St. Germain (Paladin - Melee)
Mach Star (Rogue - Skill/Face?)
Valai Blackrune (Wizard - Caster)
Miana (Paladin-Monk - Melee)
Dimral Windstrider (Ranger - Melee)
Petronicus Krupt (Fighter - Melee/Reach?)
Matthias Wellgrove (Rogue-Alch - Ranged/Skills?)

In Progress
Bard - Skill focused (Caius Bassi)
Ranger - ? (Lord Pizzmic)

Experessed Interest
Faelyn
Omoro
Aku Warashi

If I have your roles incorrect please let me know, just what I am guessing based on a quick browse of your character.

@Matthias: Glad I didn't submit my wizard named Mathias; that'd get complicated fast :P

I built Mach to be used as the team's skill monkey or face: he has the typical rogue lockbreaking, trapspotting & pocketpicking skill set, and he'll be capable of assisting anyone who wants to make a Bluff or Diplomacy check.
