1) Send an email to contest@paizo.com or a private message to myself.
2) Include the item name in the message.
3) Gimme a reason why you think it should be DQ'd (such as "it's a ring," or "this was published in book such-and-such," or "over word count").

Thanks!

Got ya, sorry will do this in the future.

Also thanks for the patience.

Out of curiosity, do you notify the submitter why their item was disqualified? Or does it just silently vanish?

Usually, DQ entries don't know they were DQ'd until they ask for feedback after the reveal - even then they may not get told.

And if you ask if you have, you identify your item which DQ's you!

So I'm afraid you have to sit and wait it out.

Oh, I'm not worried about my item. I'm just thinking that the feedback would hopefully make people take a closer look at the rules next time. Even if its just a copy/paste of the rule that was broken.

On the flip side, if they care so little as to not follow the rule in the first place, they probably wouldn't even look at a message about it.

It's ok to flag a cursed item.

We don't notify an author if their item is DQ'd, but it can be brought up after R1 is over.

You can mail to contest@paizo.com, but I don't have access to that email address (the tech team compiles them and forwards them to me in batches) so I don't have access to that information at all times during the day. I do have access to my private messages at any time and can jump in to handle a DQ if necessary.

I've gone through the items the tech team notified me about, as well as my PMs. FYI, armor, rings, cursed items, and items clearly over the word count have been DQ'd. :p

Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8

what about items that don't include significant information... such as completely leaving out the requirements section... should they be flagged as well?

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16 , Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Marathon Voter Season 8, Dedicated Voter Season 9 aka motteditor

Not unless inclusion would put them over the word count. Otherwise, that's not an automatic DQ.

Is submitting an item that is similar to another item from a previous year except with changes suggested by others on the forums a reason to be DQ'd?

There are a number of items I'd like to DeathQuaker because they seem unsuitable for publishing, such as mentioning bodily functions, but otherwise don't break any instant-DeathQuaker rules.

Truer words have never been spoken.

But for what it's worth, old fashioned rolled DeathQuaker rules taste better.

(I would love to report some of the "auto rejects" too, even though they do not actually break rules. Sadly, I think most people who write up such items do not read the "auto reject" list--and the people who obsessively do and would never violate that list are the only ones who do read the list.)

I sat here staring at this for like two minutes going "what the hell does this mean," before getting it and choking on my drink.

Yeah, there are a lot of auto rejects. I just gotta bite my tongue and hope that the public doesn't let them through.

wouldn't that require us to guess how many words would have gone into that section... like exactly what spells and feats are required etc.

Feros, yeah, the first two of us just happened to have the same icon. IIRC, there were just 18 people or so using it, per the stats, so it was a pretty crazy coincidence (then again, I suspect what led us to the icon was an appreciation of the writing aspect, so maybe it would make sense we all had some aptitude for Superstar).

And for what it's worth, I sometimes get confused when I see posts by one of us and think "I didn't write that!" before realizing it's actually 1 or 3.

Liberty's Edge Marathon Voter Season 7

What if I'm not pop culture savvy enough to tell for sure that the item is referencing a modern icon, but the only other option is the person has no idea what the word they just used means?

::edit::
Ok, I did figure this one out, but I'm still curious. Sometimes you have to go back to ancient usages of a word.

Although, saying you're finishing your opponents off with a misericord will mean that you're banging your opponents over the head with a church pew accessory to most people. (And, no that's NOT a reference to any item I've seen. The item in question's word usage wasn't that far off actually. You only had to go back 100 years for that one.)

Liberty's Edge Marathon Voter Season 7

And as a sidenote...

The disqualification of cursed items could be a little better noted in the rules. I knew about it from reading the forums and Sean's posts (which I think everyone entering should do of course), but reading back through the rules, I noticed that it isn't very well highlighted. I can see how some people would miss it.

Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8

I have yet to see a truly cursed item in the voting... although I have seen a few with more drawbacks then benefits.

I have not seen a cursed item e.g. an item that has the specific traits of a cursed item or is marked as being specifically cursed. That's true.

I'm not counting the ones were the bane is equal to or greater than the boons.

I'm not sending in the item that gives a ton of banes, ends with one minor boon and then says that it's not cursed because you can remove the item whenever you want.

I'm also not sending in the ones where there's no boon so I have to wonder why the heck it's a wondrous item. (There's been at least three of those) I figure the definition of cursed can somewhat open.

But I do think that it never hurts to make sure everyone is aware of a rule and I think we'd see fewer of the ones I noted above if it was better known.
