If you're thinking the specific reference is to Brief Lives, then I've seen the same item and agree. (Which isn't a knock against the item; it almost got my vote in its pairing and just happened to be one of the few times I had two decent items to decide between.)
Oh boy, this item is sooo cool. Imaginative, very fantasy, and something I'd love to see in an actual game - if it wouldn't be Class-in-a-Can. What where you thinking, unknown author?

Hmm, if something is unadorned, simple, or otherwise plain, should you really dedicate another 20+ words describing the finer points of said item? Good thing you were up against something ridiculously under priced!

"The PC can decide" I guess if one of my NPCs uses it they can't have any fun then.

I had one item that kept popping up that I really didn't care for. This time, it occurred to me that the 'sales pitch' at the beginning needed to be amped up. So I read it with Billy Mays narrating the whole darn thing in my head. Really made me laugh. when you hit hour 3-4 it helps. Honestly.

Seriously? I can't cast wish to overcome your prestidigitation based skin color change? Seriously? Dispell magic doesn't work on your magic item that only costs a pittance? No Anti-Magic Fields affect your item? Really? Explain it to me again why not even a god can come down from the heavens to counter your arcane mark spell?

I am also loving immediate action, no save, no check, no roll at all class feature canceling items usable 3/day.
I especially love them when the spell effect they emulate 3/day would cost MORE to purchase in scroll format.
It is even better when the item allows you to redirect the countered effect or ability back on the originator of the effect.

Ok I am late to this party and have only just stared voting.
Some things I have noticed....
Lots of bad formatting - this says to me the entrant doesn't follow instructions or doesn't care how her/his entry looks compared to others... This is not an auto fail but can push me if the items are close.
Spells in a can - people aren't even trying to be subtle, item X lets you cast spell Z 3 times a day.
No proof reading - when you have "finished" writing your entry walk away and do something else for an hour and come back and re read it. I saw one I liked but it ended like this... Item X provides skill A, and power B under Z conditions. Additionally,

Marathon voter while capturing each item ... that's alot of work you folks are doing ...

I don't think I have the fortitude for this. All of the items are starting to blur together for me. I even hallucinated that the system gave me two of the same items!

Yes
Most people are frustrated with the "move to fetch / standard to drink" of a potion and want it to be faster.
Walked a couple of miles with the dog, fed the cat, watched how the dog and the cat threw evaluating glances at each other, and did random stuff that took forever.

Ah yes, that crazy banner no party should allowed to have, at least until they are banned from entering the royal palace (seriously, as a GM I would be flabbergasted as how the NPC reaction would be, dumbfunded staring aside).

My first item draft was sort-of a camping item, albeit with a strong divine rejuvenation theme. Luckily I realized that it wan't a wondrous item but a staff and made something new, otherwise it would have disappeared between all the other camping items.
