I'm curious. In the eyes of the community, is an item that specifically caters to one class generally worse than one that doesn't? Not counting extreme cases where the second item is clearly just plain awful or something.
For me, not necessarily. It depends on the flavor and function of the item. If, at it's heart, the item is there simply to reduce the drawbacks of said class, then yes it's worse. However, if it takes the class in a new direction or provides a new spin on old hat abilities, that could be good.

It's item-to-item to me, but my rule of thumb is if an item makes me want to play that class, it's a winner, even if I'm not a fan of the class.
The dangers are that some classes are particularly divisive, and classes outside of the CRB may not appeal to voters who don't have experience with them.

Dang! I hate it when I find an item that has some similarities to my own. Last year it happened repeatedly as I was one of the plant-like footwear people. Fortunately it was deemed that mine was the better of that group.
This item I don't think is better than mine in case we get paired, but it is still irritating to see something that is similar to something I expected to be unique. And this item is priced a bit more than mine and seemed less powerful, but alas the last ability made it more reasonable. Now I've got to determine whether it is better with this item it's paired with.

I've seen an item that's mechanically similar to mine, but with much different flavor.
BTW, my backup item last year was basically yours, Nickolas. I was glad I didn't have to go up against it! :D

What about items that require a class feature to create? I'm not clear on that to be honest but I keep seeing it crop up.
I don't get very hung up on requirements. It might just be how things go at my table, but wondrous items my players encounter are found or purchased much more often than crafted.

If it fits the theme of the item, I'm cool with it. Myriad monster parts and rare items shouldn't be there. That's the kind of stuff for a specific supplement on enhancing spells and items with dead monster bits. Generally, as long as the basic requirements are sound, in proper format and order, and fit the theme, I don't see requiring a class or specific feature to be a problem. There's precedent for it.

Tell me about it. I have found one item that is very similar to mine, and two slightly different, but with the same general theme.

IMO, it's neither worse nor better. In terms of Superstar, I think you're taking a risk, since people may not be a fan of the class, but other than that, I don't think it matters. (Of course, if you're working with a popular class or do something to -- as Garrett said -- make a class seem cooler, you can really benefit -- look at the hound master archetype as I think a brilliant example of that.)

The biggest vote winner in this case is the item utility acrss the player spectrum. Items made by one class using one aspect of that class are not really frowned upon. It is the item itself not how it is made that is the big factor.

Have seen several ZZgp items though.
I think you might have been underwhelmed.
Or maybe just whelmed.

I feel somehow ... short changed.
It was not that bad, but terrible for the price.
When I read I thought, cool. Then read price and was, Oh.

Better that than not seeing anything remotely like my item. That makes me more than a bit nervous... I mean, sure, unique might be a good thing... but on the other hand, it might mean that there is a reason that no one has made one of those yet - and not a happy reason.
On the other hand, no sense it fretting one way or another. I'm off to freeze myself cryogenically (ala Eric Cartman) until the 21st. Beats waiting...

Nah, the author wasn't close enough to word limit to be problem - there were around 100 or more words left, if I remember correctly.
