But please remember CLW isn't what I would require the most important 'healer role' capability.

Things like neutralize poison, lesser restoration, cure disease, etc... are much harder to take care of then hit point damage. I always start trying to buy at least 1 of those type of potions or scrolls each scenario. But then people always seem to get upset that I don't have one for everybody.

I also suggest antitoxin. Lasting an hour, 1 or 2 could really help you get through a dungeon adventure.

Unfortunately, some things are out of the purchase limits until one reaches a higher level: It jumps from '0' (with all of the exceptions, of course) to 500 gp at 5 fame, but I am at 4 fame now. So, it would have to be a PP purchase and, since 1 PP gets you a 150 gp item and 2 a 750 gp item, using just 1 isn't enough for, say, a potion of lesser restoration and 2 is a waste.

I don't know whether to recommend antiplague as much, since the one disease I keep running across - filth fever - doesn't do anything in game time. I did, at least, save another group some healing costs afterwards with some use of the heal skill, possibly with a healer's kit and possibly with some bodybalm.

Folks, you're going to have to either print your sheets and write on them or edit on them yourselves to track your purchases. I certainly can't handle that level of micro-management with this many players. ^_~ I'm trusting everyone to manage their own totals and purchases. I've been told the "official" sig I attempted doesn't really hold up anyway, so don't worry about altering it. I generally track my own info by hand or with PC Gen.

Always Available Items(copied from the Guide to Organized Play):

You may always purchase the following items or equipment so long as you’re in an appropriately sized settlement.

• All basic armor, gear, items, and weapons from Chapter
6 of the Core Rulebook, including Small and Large-sized
items. This does not include equipment made from
dragonhide, but it does include equipment made from
the other special materials, such as alchemical silver
and cold iron (see the Special Materials section on
page 154 of the Core Rulebook). All mundane (completely
nonmagical) weapons, armor, equipment, and
alchemical gear found in any other source that is legal
for play are considered always available.
• +1 weapons (2,000 gp + 300 for the masterwork weapon
cost + item cost)
• +1 armor (1,000 gp + 150 for the masterwork armor cost
+ item cost)
• +1 shields (1,000 gp + 150 for the masterwork armor
cost + item cost)
• Potions and oils of 0- or 1st-level spells at caster level
1st (50 gp or less)
• Scrolls of 0- or 1st-level spells at caster level 1 (50 gp
or less)
• Wayfinder (50% discount—250 gp; see page 299 of The
Inner Sea World Guide)
Beyond the gear noted above, your character is restricted
to purchasing additional items from his accumulated
Chronicle sheets, or by capitalizing on his fame.

Weapons, armor, equipment, magic items and so on that are outside
of these lists are not available for purchase at any time.

The way you buy a wand of any level 1 spell without having "unlocked" it on a chronicle sheet first is through the option to spend two Prestige Points on a "Free purchase up to 750 gp".

GENERIC PRESTIGE AWARDS:

bluedove - Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you should be keeping track of these purchases. I had just learned and made a habit of 'publishing' what I purchase on the discussion thread - or at least the big stuff. That way, there's no doubt if there are any questions later. (I also find it interesting to see what other are buying, and to try to coordinate.)

The Fame/Prestige material is also in the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play, which is the free PDF guide.

No need to apologize, I do that too. Just letting Jorag and everyone know that I won't be recording your purchases on your Chronicle Sheets and re-sending them out again. That's the player's responsibility everywhere I've played and it definitely is here!

Had a lil mini stroke trying to imagine myself documenting all the purchases, lol! >_<

But I am perfectly happy to help you figure out what you can or need to buy. The Guide to Organized Play should hopefully already be in everyone's possession, if not, do download it and look it over. There is stuff in the Field Guide that is not in the Guide to Organized Play though like the Vanities and Faction Titles. Though most of those cost more PP than you guys have at this point.

Ok, I think I'm understanding now. The whole wording in the guide about the 2PP being used to aquire an item from your faction was confusing me, so I was trying to find some sort of items-from-my-faction-list to see what was available. Am I understanding correctly that the 2PP purchase lets you buy whatever magic item you like as long as you're within the gold limit of 750gp ?

My usual package of first purchases includes a Masterwork Backpack (for low-strength characters), Antitoxin, Antiplague, Air Crystals, Potion of Cure Light Wounds, Holy Water, Alchemist's Fire, Scroll of Lesser Restoration (which anyone with it on their spell list can use, I think).

This time I'm buying a Cloak of Resistance +1 for Marla. Maybe some more when I have a chance.

VC - Sydney, Australia

Yeah I have a default package too :P I like the addition of the scroll of lesser resto as a suggestion too. Healers Kit for the +2 also helps, and Acid is nice and cheap as well.

Ioun Torch is also a crowd pleaser.

Tresca, Yes, that is correct (although it doesn't have to be a magic item). As one oddity, you can buy with 2 PP a scroll with 5 copies of a single 150 gp spell, but not a scroll of 5 different spells.

You can also buy with gp the "always available" items mentioned by bluedove, above. The scroll of lessor restoration would require you to have at least 5 fame to be able to purchase it outright since it isn't an "always available" 0 or 1st level spell - unless, of course, it appears on a Chronicle sheet as available to you.

To be a little redundant, I was putting together a small document with a number of suggested purchases for low-level characters. I'm going to have to add the Scroll of Lessor Restoration to it - possibly as a 2 PP scroll of 5 copies (good for someone in a group to have) as well as Potions of Darkvision and, especially, Oil of Daylight.

FurtiveZoog's buying guide:

Buying a Wand of Cure Light Wounds for 2 Prestige Points is a very popular option, and, it seems, most people will consider you to be responsible for the costs of your own healing, at least by second level. You also might want to pick up a potion of CLW (50 gp) for emergencies, and a dose of antitoxin and antiplague (at 50 each), especially since it is going to be awhile before your healer can do much about poisons and diseases.

For healing, the Wand of CLW averages 5.5 HP per charge (1d8+1, all in one round), while the Wand of Infernal Healing heals 10 HP per charge and is usable by wizards and sorcerers, but at a slower rate of 1 HP per round. So, IH is more efficient for after-battle healing than CLW. (It does make you detect as evil for that 10 rounds, and while using one is technically not a violation of PFS alignment rules, it seems a bit unsavory/cheesy to many to be carrying one around if you are good-aligned.)

I had asked a similar question, Buying guides for early PFS prestige point purchases?, and got some good feedback. Mage Armor, Protection from Evil, and Shield are some choices, and I like the idea of Magic Missile so that I can almost always be doing some damage (if not that much damage). A key point seems to not buy wands (or scrolls for that matter) for spells with DCs since they will be at minimum values.

I also am fond of scrolls for various spells to make sure I have the right ability at the right time, especially for out-of-combat use. I have Purify Food and Drink and Read Magic (12.5 gp ea.), and Comprehend Languages (25 gp). There are so many languages in PF that there are very often ones - like Kelish, Tian, or Thassilonian - that no one might know how to speak (well, read and understand). (Make sure Detect Magic is one of your prepared/known cantrips since you typically need it to find and identify magic items during an adventure.)

Having a cleric or oracle with Create Water can save each person 16+ lbs. per day, but have a waterskin to drink out of.

I would have something for battling swarms, especially if your group doesn't have an alchemist, such as one or two flasks of alchemist's fire and/or a flask of acid or alkali, since if the swarm component is small enough then it is immune to weapon damage and most magic, and more than one such swarm appears in the few Tier 1-2 scenarios I know about. A Burning Hands spell also works fairly well.

Some other things:

a Blue Book (5 gp) for whatever city you're in: "... By consulting the book for 1 hour, for the next 24 hours you gain a +2 circumstance bonus on Knowledge (local), Bluff, and Diplomacy checks to gather or use information in that city. ..."

a Heatstone (Inner Sea World Guide, p. 293) since two of the handful of scenarios I'm familiar with have potentially-deadly snowstorms;
(a Scroll of Endure Elements could also be good for heat or cold (25 gp), but it seems to be the sudden snowstorms that are most problematic – you’ll probably know ahead of time about going into that blazing desert and can buy the scroll then – and a heatstone would help the whole party.)

an Ioun Torch (75 gp) - something of a mistake since an Everburning Torch still costs a whopping 110 gp;

a Pathfinder Chronicle (ISWG) for each of your Knowledge skills, giving a +2 circumstance bonus after 1-4 rounds of searching (50 ea., 1 lb.).

a Potion of Touch of the Sea could save a warrior in armor from drowning (50 gp);

a Scroll Box (5 gp), waterproof, unlike a "Case, map or scroll";

Waterproof Bags (5 sp);

a Weapon Cord (1 sp) - to prevent being disarmed (so good it is very controversial);

a Whetstone (2 cp), 15 minutes of work to get a +1 damage to the first hit with a bladed weapon - a great mini-buff;

I've made a set of arrows (or bolts or sling bullets) out of cold iron (cheap, just twice the regular cost) and then applied either alchemical silver or adamantine weapon blanches (20 and 100 gp, respectively, for 10 of each). So, I have 10 that can damage devils, demons, and fey, and 10 for demons, fey, and damaging objects and structures. This sure beats 3000+ gp for an adamantine melee weapon! There is also the Ghost Salt weapon blanch that works against incorporeal undead and costs 200 gp for 10 pieces of ammunition (Pathfinder Society Field Guide).

I typically have at least a dagger of one or both cold iron and alchemical silver (4 gp CI; 22 gp AS), and I have a bludgeoning weapon, too. However, alchemical Silver does cause a -1 to damage for bladed or piercing weapons, so these weapons may not be worth it low strength. Normally, I have been skipping crossbows for low-strength casters because of encumbrance problems, but a caster in one of my groups just had three 20's in five shots, taking out goblins right and left. Of course, a Wand of Magic Missiles has negligible weight. :-)

There is one also guide to many possible purchases - some affordable ... - in the article Pathfinder Society Survival 101.

Those are some wonderful suggestions, thanks guys! Gonna have to look at some of them in further detail. I just looked over my first chronicle sheet, and I noticed there's a wand of CLW on there woth 25 charges for 375g. Could be a nice alternative to save my PP. Or I may look at using the PP on a wand of shield instead...

An other possibility to mention.

If you have one of the books that list it, many people prefer the wand of Infernal Healing over the Wand of CLW.

Personally, I usually prefer the wand of CLW (especially at low levels). Infernal Healing always totals 10 point over 10 rounds, so it does more, but takes longer. But sometimes a CLW can actually get someone immediately conscious not just stop them from dying.

A few times I have also seen the wand of CLW used offensively against ghosts and haunts when the group had nothing else to hurt them.

Considered Swashbuckler? It uses the grit mechanic, and is really fun, and the playtest version is PFS legal.

I've purchased a Dragonhide Breastplate using Mujembai's PP. I am fairly sure that is allowed, but I'd appreciate it if anyone could let me know if I am wrong. I've also purchased a set of MW Chainshirt Barding for Unapp, which has a -1 armour check penalty, since he does not have proficiency this would come of his attacks, except that I have also purchased several vials of armor ointment which reduces armor check by 1 for 8 hours, so he should not actually suffer.

Mujembai should be done, got about 100gp left so might pick up some scrolls.

I havnt really looked into the new playtest classes. Im kindof a purist, and while they are from Paizo, I dont think ill touch any of them until they are in a book :)

Why not just get a suit of MW studded leather for Unapp? Its only a difference of 1 AC, and cheaper. And while theres no restriction for animal companions, leather armor instead of metal armor is more thematic.

Thats just an old half-orcs opinion though :)

Having some knucklehead fighter around to head butt nasties is always nice, but I'm confident between our ranged prowess and healing power that we'll be OK. We'll just have to be careful with our positioning, which will add a welcome layer of strategy and difficulty to this mission.

Jorag I don't really buy that, druids don't wear metal armour because it effects their connection with the earth, I think an ethical objection is pretty darn silly - at least across the board. I can use a metal scimitar, but its bad if my animal companion wears metal armour that better protects him? And the way I look at it its 30gp per scenario for +1 AC, that seems like a great bargain that will only get better. Plus to be honest I was struggling to spend all my gold.

Tbh I always kinda wondered about the metal thing. I mean, metal is as much a part of the natural world as wood and leather. Im guessing its simply there to avoid druids in fullplate, because I think we can agree that just seems weird, atleast seen from the classic fantasy viewpoint.

It's really just a carry over from earlier versions. I believe some of the earliest versions didn't let you use metal weapons either. There were all sorts of weird 'reasons' put forth back then.

iirc: The most common was at the supposed medevial tech level mining and smelting was extremely environmentally destructive. And ripping metal out of the earth was a non-renewable resource. But you could always just plant another tree. No one did, but you could.
There were also some saying the problem was the 'worked metal' was incompatible with the druidic philosophies. But if you could get a suit a of workable armor made from raw iron ore it would be ok. I think that was when people started putting forth the dwarven stone plate armor.

As far as I could tell, those were always reasons after the fact by people uninvolved. I don't think the actual authors ever actually said. I don't really think it could be a balance issue. When the druids/no metal thing first came out they were actually pretty weak. They were popular because they were different and worked with nature, but still relatively weak.

The one I was thinking about multi-classing is an Oracle of Life who might take the Hopitalier Paladin route, although I dislike the idea of waiting even longer to get the spells to cure important things, and I probably didn't optimize her enough or in the right ways. Eh.

Hey bluedove, I wanted to post this here so I could let others know this too. I'm sorry to do it, but I need to withdraw from this game. I was involved in another group running through these, and they've just gotten to Part II as well. I turns out if I play with them we'd have 5 people.

We could probably open up recruitment, but seeing how many good players you've got here, I thought it would be easier to fill Dietrich's spot here than my spot in the other game.

Thanks for running a great game, and I'll definitely keep my eyes out for more of yours in the future!

It's ok, Derek, I understand. I really do have a significant pool to draw from with Shifty's groups on "furlough". It's ok if we have some turnover, it lets more people get in on play. ^_^

I really think we do need a level 2-4ish rogue for Gamma team though... I'll send out a call and then I have a visit with my mom and some homework and I'll try and get maps up for everyone tonight.

I hope it's not too late to make some purchases for the new adventure. I've been working long hours, so I hadn't really had time to go through the spell list to decide on some items.

Marco's purchases:

potions CLW (2) (100 gp)
Scroll box (5 gp, 1 lb)
acid flask (2) (20 gp, 2 lb)
thunderstone (1) (30 gp, 1 lb)

Scrolls
message (2) (25 gp)
burning hands (2) (50 gp)
mage armor (2) (50 gp)
comprehend languages (50 gp)

oil/daylight (2 prestige)

Total: 330 gp

Hey, Bluedove. So I'm looking at the guide to organized play, and it says that until I level up for the first time, I can change any aspect about my character (except PFS number) between missions. I'm finding I have a few skills/extracts that I think are not particularly useful in PFS games. Is it all right if I switch the following?

Reassign skill point from Appraise to Disable Device
Change the extract "Identify" on my list to "Reduce Person"

Yes, that is correct. You may rebuild her any way you like between scenarios until she runs a scenario at level 2. And I am fine with making final purchases on your way to the entrance to the sewers, but once we begin the first encounter, no more purchases.

Bosslady, could you kick Svet from the Alpha thread please? I have both showing and I don't want to accidentally sneak a peak :)

I have not yet played an alchemist.

I personally agree with you that reduce person is likely to be more useful. However I wanted you to be aware, in discussions some people really like identify.

I have rarely seen appraise as all that terribly useful in PFS (especially since they nixed the faction missions in place of secondary success conditions). And the few times it has been useful, it was by no means critical.

Well, I should be getting more formulae with each level, so I can always opt to take identify when I level up. The extra AC and to hit bonus from the Reduce Person is just too good to pass up.

It's a shame that Alchemists aren't adept with scrolls. It would be mice to have a small selection of just-in-case scrolls like identify that I wouldn't necessarily use every adventure.

Done! Edited Beta and Gamma too. I'm dragging my feet a little on the update, trying to make sure everyone is ready to move forward. I will post one final word from the V.C. and your optional faction missions, should you choose to accept them along with your approach map soon.

Oh, OK! Yup, I've used the rope comment at least twice now. (It's from a chapter intro in "Seeker's of Secrets".) One adventure I keep thinking about mostly involved us using several sets of rope to get past most obstacles, and Oti isn't the jumping kind in his banded mail.

I hadn't realized that you were in the other game - I get surprised like that a lot. I'll have to add "DM Kludde" to the list of people I know and can try hitting up for games. ;-) I'm "GM FurtiveZoog", but I can usually only manage 1 GM game at a time. :-\
