Yes I know control is king.
Yes I know summoning is powerful.
Yes, even massed AoE polymorph all to glass is mighty.
What about the pew pew wizard?
Looking for ideas on a wizard that can plink.
The main block I see is that the only at-wills a wizard has are the 0 level cantrips. And 1d3 (even with say +1 for evoker subschool or +1 for sorcerer bloodline) and maybe another +1 for alchemical focus and then +1 for PBS. 1d3+3 RTA at-will is nifty at level 1 though of course subpar.
Intensified Spell sadly doesn't work as cantrips don't scale.
Any ideas? (other than rolling an archer and making your own sound effects.)

By 'plink' you mean 'blaster wizard', check out the link in the first post of this thread: http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2pwg7?Brewers-Guide-to-the-Blockbuster-Wizard#1
Ah, no but thanks. That's the AoE polymorph all to glass wizard :) More kaboom than pew pew.

Oh, if only magic missile scaled like in 2E... But seriously, the closest thing I can think of is finding ways to empower ray of frost. It's the only spell you can use endlessly, and there are simply too few spell slots in a day to make PEW-PEW powerful. Maybe at later level, if you got a good staff of magic missiles sure, but that's a fairly high level option.

Isn't there a feat/alternate ability/trait that lets you boost the cap on the missile counts o
For magic missile?
I know I've seem builds focused around it using some kinda class ability, but the build is escaping me right now. I remember thinking that you'd be basically going 'pew pew' as a wizard, which was pretty cool.

So what exactly is a pew pew wizard? Lots of little damage spells?
If thats the case, a good way to do it is with the super genius games Godling
The mystic godling in particualar. It can be abused (it is exetremely flexible), but it can be superb to accomplish what you are looking for. Basically godlings to cherry pick from all sorts of different options. For the mystic godling this includes, bloodline powers, sorceror school specialties, domains, and orcale mysteries. So you could, for instance, Take the first level ability from a elemental sorceror (the arcana and the elemental ray), the 1st level school power from an evoker (the force bolt), one of the domains with a ranged attack etc. You could even take a second sorceror bloodline ability eventually, or an orcale mystery with a breath weapon.
Thats a whole bunch of 1d6+1/2level ranged attacks. Not to mention lots of potential boosts to damage spells.
Another option, its to play a class that focuses on pew pewing, from the ground up. The kobold press Battle Scion for instance a 'force blast' ability that is like a scaling magic missile (thought its a ranged touch attack now). And the force blaster archetype focuses on int. It is however only a full bab, armor wearing 4 level caster, that is more fighter then mage, but is very good at pew pewing with its force blasts especially the archetype.

Elf Sorcerer1 (Crossblooded Archetype) / Wizard19 (Spellslinger Archetype)
(School: School of the Gun) Sorcerer Bloodlines are Orc and Draconic (Gold Dragon).
Opposition Schools are Abjuration, Divination, Enchantment and Necromancy.
Elf Trait: Fleet-Footed
In short, the bloodlines add damage to spells with fire descriptor and Spellslinger makes rays, cones and lines more accurate and/or tougher to save against (also make bullets more deadly if he gets around to shooting one).
STR 7
DEX 18 (+1 at 8, 12, 16, 20 lvls)
CON 12
INT 17 (+1 at 4 lvl)
WIS 8
CHA 11
Traits: Magical Knack; Reactionary
1 Point Blank Shot
2
3 Precise Shot
4
5 Spell Focus (Evocation)
6 Spell Specialization (Scorching Ray, at 13th change to Contagious Flame)
7 Greater Spell Focus (Evocation)

9 Empower Spell

11 Spell Penetration, Dazing Spell

13 Quicken Spell
14
15 Spell Perfection (Contagious Flame)
16 Greater Spell Penetration
17 Improved Initiative

There you have a wizard that shoots rays from his revolveres. How cooler than that?
Essential spells include: Burning Hands, Scorching Ray, Fireball, Dragon's Breath, Cone of Cold, Contagious Flame
A rod of selective spell and a rod of elemental spell are necessary.
EDIT: Feats and stats corrected in order to be able to cast the first lvl Sorcerer spell.

The Quite-big-but-not-BIG Bad wrote:What do you mean with "pew pew"? Ray spells? Thanks everyone for the suggestions it is appreciated.
Doesn't have to be a ray, could be something like magic missile.
I was looking for moderate steady damage, at-will. :)
The spellslinger uses firearms that target touch AC and can also enchant them as a swift action for a number of minutes equal to the level of the spell sacrificed. This is a much better alternative than cantrips for steady damage. You can also take Arcane Strike in place of greater spell focus (evocation) for even more attack and damage bonuses.
I do believe that Spellslinger is what you are looking for. Damaging, flashy and cool.

Yeah, your best bet is probably Spellslinger. Casters are inherently limited by spells/day, so the only "at will" thing you're going to get is Ray of Frost/Acid Splash or a wand of something. If you're OK with not being able to do it endlessly, I would say play a sorcerer focused on Scorching Ray - a pyromaniac gnome with the right feats and bloodlines can deal craaazy amounts of damage with each ray. And once you get to higher levels, you can simply use up your spells on Scorching Rays and Metamagicked Scorching Rays, and pew all day long.
Although, if you went Arcane Trickster, you could probably start sneak attacking with Ray of Frost for repeated damage - could be worth looking at.

There are old threads floating around about getting maximum results from ray of frost. Considering it's a cantrip it got pretty impressive. I would love to provide a link but I'm afraid I don't have one.
- Torger
Here is the jist of it:
Human Ray of Frost/Acid Splash Sorcerer
Class:
Abyssal Bloodline (Brutal) - +2 Damage
Trait:
Havoc of the Society (Magic Trait) - +1 Damage to total Spell Damage (Force/Trait)
Adopted (Zest for Battle) - Whenever you have a morale bonus to weapon attack rolls, you also receive a +1 trait bonus on weapon damage rolls.
(Note: I am not certain if these stack or not)
Race Feat:
Flagbearer - +1 Morale Bonus to Attack/Damage
Level 1 Feat:
Point-Blank Shot - +1 Bonus to Attack/Damage within 30 ft.
Items:
Flask of Liquid Ice (Focus) - +1 Damage to Ray of Frost
Flask of Acid (Focus) - +1 Damage to Acid Splash
Flag - Required for Flagbearer
At Will:
Ray of Frost - +2 Attack 1d3+7 Damage
Acid Splash - +2 Attack 1d3+7 Damage
Disrupt Undead - +2 Attack 1d6+6 Damage
You then have the option of dipping into a Freebooter Ranger for the +1/+1 Ability, switching it up to either a wizard for the Evocation school, or a Weapon Master Fighter with the focus on Rays (Rays are weapons too), and get Weapon Focus/Specialization.

Not sure if you've seen Brewer's Blockbuster Wizard HERE.
The idea with his build is a substantial number of fireballs per day, many of them juiced with metamagic and more than a fair few w/ fire subbed out for something more effective. Looks like fun to me and you could probably supplement it with lower level play by spamming either Burning Hands or Snapdragon Fireworks. You could presumably, cast one the first round while your Improved Familiar Wand Jockey does the same. Then the next round, use a move action to direct a firework for both Wizard and Familiar while casting a 2nd. On round 3, you're both directing a pair of fireworks which isn't spectacular unless you lace one of them with Dazing Spell. ;) Seems kind of funny, 4d4 per round (10 points on avg, 5 if they save) plus save or be dazzled (kind of lame I know, better if you make a couple of them Dazed instead but that comes later).
