The Freebooter Ranger archetype replaces Favored Enemy.
How does the Quarry function for a Freebooter Ranger?
If it doesn't, then should it have been replaced?

RAW, Quarry doesn't seem to work.
What I would do as a DM is allow Quarry to work on an enemy you have designated with Freebooter's Bane.
That seems to be the logical choice, but these things are best left with official word.
Table variance, and PFS make the logical houserule not an option.
The Warden and Wild Stalker archetypes also lose Favoured Enemy but have no mentions of any replacement abilities or changes for Quarry and improved Quarry.
It's possible to get a Favored Enemy by other means though: the Instant Enemy spell for instance, or from a Prestige Class like Lantern Bearer.
I am not sure how Quarry and Improved Quarry were missed.

There's a lot of Ranger archetypes where FE is lost but Quarry or the capstone remains, or cases where Favored Terrain is lost, but Camouflage and Hide in Plain Sight remain unchanged. In one hilarious case, the archetype that replaces FT actually bothers to give you something for camo, but...forgets all about HiPS.
It's very sloppy design work, really.
I figure once the next wave comes, this might get answered.
Don't forget that FAQ button!
Unfortunately not... I'll try to keep it going though. How often do they respond to faqs?
Well, when they have a Convention, or big project in the works, they really don't answer FAQs.
When a break hits, they usually come through in a wave, answering a number of FAQs.
As I'm playing a Freebooter Dwarf, I'm faq and doting this.
Hopefully, it will eventually get answered.
even though i hate necroing threads i would really like to know wether or not this has had any official answer yet.
i would like to play a freebooter in case my character in the current campaign i'm playing in bites the dust, but if freebooter's bane means giving up 3 class abilities it's just not worth it.
Need some insight on this as well.

I already did, but I will contribute a bump
Also, does instant enemy actually do anything if you don't have a favoured enemy to begin with?

Nope.
i really can't understand how there are ... what, four? archetypes of the ranger who have non-functional class abilities and it hasn't been answered yet.
does everyone just houserule this or something?
Usually.
Doesn't help for PFS though.

I'm really trying to figure out just how so many ranger archetypes just don't work. I don't get it.
FAQ'ing.

I'd almost rather they NOT address it at this point and leave it to DMs to houserule.
Because I have a hunch, if they actually do take the issue on, they're just going to say, "Ah...yuuup, yeah, you lose all those class features as part of the archetype as well. Sorry. That was totally how it was meant to be from the start. Honest."
Because taking stuff away is so much easier than actually trying to redesign an archetype with whole new abilities.

oh come on, it's not like the developers have recently removed elements out of the game as a kneejerk reaction. /sarcasm.
on another note, how would people houserule this generally? simply allow quary to work in conjunction with freebooter's bane? doesn't this make quary much easier to use for a freebooter compared to a regular ranger?
unfortunately since my current character did get killed and i'm still thinking on playing a freebooter i will probably have to talk with my game master to apply a fix to the ranger archetypes that doesn't break the game or the class.
(stealth bump)
and i'll bump again. come on people, hit FAQ.

Surprising, this has not been answered.
This is actually a very valid question for PDT.
Just FAQ it, and I am sure it will be answered, eventually.

Why do all you people hate the ranger so much? O_o

The Trapper Ranger is a favorite, as it is essentially what people expect the Rogue to be, but never is.

and i'll bump again. please FAQ
it seems i can expect an answer on this the day after crane wing gets fixed.
We have not hit a full year yet, but maybe we are still going to get an answer.
Nope. Still waiting on that FAQ. Hope something would come out soon.
Well we could try to get more people to request an faq on this.
More people faq request = better chance this will be faq soon.
Yeah just look at the damage dice threa- Oh wait, the PDT answers questions seemingly randomly, not based on faq requests
CWheezy wrote: Just like ice tomb I thought that was handled.
Yeah, after 2 years.
So we still have one and a half to go for this one.
