What was the issue? Was it problems with cover and firing into melee? Did you have Precise Shot yet?
I don't know anything about sniper rogues, so I don't know what they need to do to get sneak attacks, so I don't know if that might be your problem.
Generally, fighters, rangers, and monks (zen archer archetype) are regarded as the best archers.

ask if you can rebuild your rogue as a ranger.
The dificulty to deliever sneak attack at range is part of the archer rogue problem.
OP, you can try to multiclass into 4 levels of weapon master fighter. taht will give you a much needed boon to your BAB and two feats.
About the feats, just take point blank shot, rapid shot, preceis shot, deadly aim, weapon focus, weapon specialization, manyshot, point blank master, clusterd shots. That shoudl be enough for half of the game.

In tight spaces, its all about the firing into melee penalty and the soft cover penalties.
The first can be overcome via the Precise Shot feat as Fromper indicated above.
The later can be overcome with the feat Improved Precise Shot, but that has a Prerequisite of a +11 BaB... which is level 15 for a rogue. A ranger can select Improved Precise Shot as a bonus feat at level 6 (ignoring prerequisites)... so that's always the best bet for getting to that particular feat quickly.... but again, is not for rogues.
Outside of that, if you can get airborne, oftimes a height advantage can help get clear shots, or if you're other team mates are cooperative they can try to leave you fire lanes (though that rarely happens) and you'd have to communicate that with them ahead of time.

So I built a rogue (sniper)class for a level one but when we were in the dungeon his uses were much lessened than I thought they would be. Anyone have any good advice/builds for a good tight space range user?
What do you want out of the archer beyond this?
I would suggest a zen archer monk without anything else specified. Depending upon what you want a ranger archer could work better, etc.
If you go with this then go Dwarven Zen Archer Monk, max stealth and build a scout. Give the particulars of point buy, sources allowed, etc and I can give you a build.. or you can look a few up.

It's difficult for rogues to leverage their sneak attack with ranged weapons since they can use flanking.
For a tight space or "in the middle of melee" archer, I agree with James. Zen Archer gets Point Blank Master at 3rd level and access to Improved Precise Shot at 6th.
If you switch to rogue after that, get Deadly Range to increase the range of your sneak attacks or pick up Sniper's Goggles when you can afford them. If you can get Sniper's Goggles, check out the Deep Sight feat, which extends your darkvision to 120 feet. You should be able to get at least 2 rounds of "flurry of sneak attack" before the bad guys are close enough to even get a Perception roll.
(Re: Robin Hood. Fights with multiple weapons, equally effective at range and in melee, lives in the woods, attacks through stalking and ambushing--kind of the quintessential ranger, I'd say. )

I know a lot of DMs that houserule in a feat that's like ranged Feint for rogues that want to snipe. Perception vs. Acrobatics instead of Bluff vs. Sense Motive, or however you want to do it. Cheapy also has a pretty good houserule/fix for sneak attack that makes being a sniper a lot easier, too, and having played with it as an option in a few of my games it's pretty well balanced.
If you're set on playing a rogue sniper by default they're not a great choice. Houseruling can help if your DM is cool with throwing you a bone.

The lack of feats and party might have been the downfall of the build now that I think about it. no precise shot for level one, and the party expected me to scout as a rogue and whenever an enemy was found they'd charge in and draw the enemies close. This zen archer seems to be coming up a lot is that in advanced players or ultimate combat?
