I don't understand the vault lock at all. As a player I can't stand puzzles as I am extremely bad at them. At the table I just go dumb and can never figure them out.
As a GM I am embarrassed to say that I don't understand this one at all. I've read it over several times and can't figure out what the players are supposed to do and the map doesn't help. Can anyone break this down for me?

The room is filled with 5ft square x full room height blocks that fit snugly together with no gaps. Think of it as a room grid with a six sided dice filling each square (which is probably a good way to run it).
Basic operation:
All of the columns are in the "down" position apart from the one in the doorway which is initially raised to ceiling height.
There are four dials in the control room (north, south, east, west). Turning a dial raises the corresponding block next to the currently open square. The block in the currently open square then descends.
This allows a person to slowly navigate across the floor, stepping one block at a time.
This must be repeated until you have moved from the entrance to the exit.
Complications:
There are some fixed blocks that cannot be raised as marked on the map.
The system resets after 3 failure attempts and the currently raised block crashes down. The person in the square takes damage from the falling block and is forced through a trapdoor into the pit below taking more falling damage. The pit can be traversed back to the main area though is a difficult climb. A failure attempt is any attempt to raise a block that cannot be moved or a failure to operate the dials correctly.
Someone must stand on the currently open square which doubles as a pressure plate, or else the dials cannot be operated.
You cannot easily communicate past the blocks.
As written there is no way for the last person to get through. It was suggested in the main thread that the first person through could raise all the blocks from the other end as a special effect.

Another duplicate thread.
How about we keep the discussion in this thread where the question was also asked.
