So I am obviously behind on my scheduling this year, but the special for this year is already sold out. So I decided to send PFS a polite email and see how it would be handled this year.
Those of you not in the know, last year was a nightmare with generic tickets at the door. I wanted to see if I would be able to get in this year with a generic ticket, and more importantly...if I would be able to sit at a table with my friends.
This was the official email I received:
"Agreed that last year was a mess. This year, we aren't seating generics for the special at all due to lessons learned."
This post is for 2 reasons really...not to stir up drama.
1.) Let others know that if you haven't pre-registered for the event...you are also SOL.
2.) If you have event tickets and aren't opposed to parting with them...please let me know (milesnotminutes@gmail.com).
I'm hoping to find 2 tickets, but whatever I can get is fine with me. Thanks so much.
Would suck to not get to play my Goblin in this years Special.

I agree Jeff. One part of me wants to b+*@& and complain about it, but at the same time...it was a nightmare last year and it only makes sense.
It just sucks that 2 weeks after event registration opens I'm way too late to order tickets, and I'm sure they were all gone within that first day or two if it was anything like last year's registration.

I would not be surprised if they were sold out within the first couple of hours, frankly.

Last year I had a real ticket was late due to marshalling rpga events showed up got placed in with generics with a random judge and my table wasnt reported for advancement. I personally am glad they made it a priority for no generic seating. I have my tickets for all events and am personally happy that I know my spot is saved at a table with a prepared judge.

Mixed feelings. glad this wasnt announced or if was wasnt known to well, cause I could see people buying them to hawk them later.
At GenCon in 2009, I found myself with an extra ticket to a particular Living Forgotten Realms adventure which was proving to be highly popular (MINI 1-1, for those who care). As they had announced that few, if any, generic tickets were going to be seated for it, a bidding war erupted for my spare ticket. I wound up selling it for something like $30; just after I sold it, a late-comer took me aside and told me that he would have paid me $100 for it. Wow.

Keep in mind that while the event is currently sold out, the Gen Con system allows for returns. So you might want to keep an eye out on the event up until pre-registration closes. Also, people often turn in tickets at the con itself, so if you are willing to wait in line at the event counter, you may be able to pick up tickets that way.

I didn't get a ticket before they sold out last year, but after about two weeks of compulsively refreshing the page, I managed to catch it soon after someone cancalled a ticket and get one of my own. The lesson being that persistence paid off, so I wouldn't give up until the event happens, if I were you.
My question is this. If the event sold out so quickly why not make 2 of them?
As I understand it, it's already significantly larger than last year. With all the logistics involved though, I frankly don't blame them one bit for not running two.

The Special wasn't sold out until 2 days ago FYI.

To be honest, I've never been one to rush out and book my events for GenCon. I play a few PFS mods (previously living greyhawk), and otherwise I'm just there for the convention itself. Last year was the first time I'd play a PFS special, perhaps next year toss a "GenCon tickets go on sale" notice into the Paizo Newsletter you email out to society members?

I believe we had a blog or two here and I know Gen Con sent out 2-3 emails regarding upcoming ticket sales.

I will sell my event tickets for...(pinky on corner of mouth)....one miiillliiiooon dollars.....
Seriously, good luck, folks, hope you find tickets some way, some how. The event didn't sell out until recently. A big chunk sold quickly but then the last hundred-ish took a few days.
Hopefully all goes without a hitch for mustering, judge assignments, session communications between staff and GMs, after game reporting and chronicle completion. I've run the specials and it takes honest prep time, being in sync with the staff's instructions and constant, open communication.
See you all in a few months.

No offense, but unless you've never attended a GenCon before, you know quite well that event registration is a huge event and they tend to sell out fast, especially "hot" ticket items like PFS, true dungeon, etc. If you really want to play something specific, you need to be proactive and sign up early, perhaps even going through the "insanity" that is the first few minutes of open registration. Its not really fair to start questioning the manner of Paizo's communication or making special requests (adding a 2nd event, more tables, generic access) to accommodate you if you didn't really take it seriously enough or chose to wait to register.
Please understand I am not trying to single you out. My comments are intended for the community as a whole and I do hope you are able to acquire a ticket so you can join the fun. Its just that every year we seem to get a number of players who tend to complain about missing out on certain events, but admit not trying very hard to get what they wanted. To be honest, it frustrates me a bit. We have doubled the scheduled table count from last year, and have done so nearly every year since 2008. Unfortunately, there is a finite amount of table space and limit to the number of GM's who volunteer. At some point, we have to call it and that might mean some players will miss out. The good news is that the specials are available for regional conventions or even local gamedays assuming you can muster the minimum table count. Sure it may not have the "oooh" factor of 900 player at 150 tables, but at least you have options.

I didn't come here and start pointing fingers or blaming anyone. Not sure why some of you feel the need to jump down my throat.
I came to make 2 clear points, one of which is that I'm looking for tickets.
I don't follow the PFS website closely, and I don't go to Gencon typically for the event games. I've been going for 15 years now, and didn't start doing the PFS events there until just last year (Gencon and Living campaigns weren't as wild back when I played). I'd heard they sell out quickly, but getting into the special was one of my primary goals for this years GenCon. Sorry if the thought of sending out your own email was completely unreasonable on my account. Clearly the fact is the tickets sold out, so what's it matter really who you reach out too.
Another top notch PR response from you Mike. Perhaps it's just the internet that makes you sound short in your responses.

Apologies if you took anything I said the wrong way. I guess, if advising you that we had a blog here and Gen Con sent out emails is considered a short response, then I am not certain what else you wanted as a response. *sigh* It was all said in a matter of fact tone. Please don't read things into it that aren't there. Heck, I even replied to your email and your thread on my vacation day because I know Gen Con is very important to you.
If you have attended Gen Con any previous year, and opted into their emailings, you would have received at least three emails advising when registration was. If you didn't see Gen Con emails advising when tickets would go on sale, I'm not sure how you think an email from us advising when Gen Con tickets are going on sale would fix anything.
I'm sorry you are upset you didn't get a ticket for an event you wanted but there is no need to take it out on me. Tickets for the special were available for 13 days. If it was one of your primary goals, why didnt you check anytime in those 13 days? In the past two years, they sold out the first day. As others have said, keep checking back and perhaps some will be returned.

Ehh some people will never be happy. I work in third party support for banking services and atleast once a day I get a customer that wants more and is upset when they do not get it. There is only so much you can do. There will always better ways to organize things and you will do things less optimal. People will interept what they want from your responses more than what you mean. Honestly I am just estatic you take the time to respond to me.
From the response I am reading and my years working directly from customers through email and phone I feel he is fishing for special favors. If he can make himself a victim and make PFS "completely unreasonable" to send a send "an email". Then you might make an exception for him.
Granted I could be wrong, but I see this everyday.

Apologies
Thanks. I appreciate that. Really that's all it took, everything else had been one line and perhaps I was over reading it, but it did feel as though you were just blowing it all off like you were above it all. Although the fact you'd even respond probably should have been an indicator that wasn't the case.
And I didn't realize you'd been working on your day off. I only emailed you directly because it was the contact point on the gencon ticket site.

Mike has been in Europe the last couple of weeks or so. I am guessing that might have something to do with it, at least part of it.
Also, I've seen other Paizo employees posting at late hours and on the weekends. It's not something we should expect, but I do appreciate the dedication and fervor they all show.

OK to the OP,
Please forgive us for being sensitive to this issue. Your post should not have produced any overly harsh responses. A clear and objective read of your post reveals that you are aware of your plight and were placing no blame on anyone else. However, please keep in mind that many of us put in a great deal of time, effort and stress to secure our Gencon schedules. After which we must endure a bunch of whining from far too many people who complain that their laziness did not pay off. They expect the same result for little to no effort. It, quite frankly makes us a little sensitive and quick to react. Please keep this perspective in mind.
To Mike and the Campaign Staff,
I fully support the rule eliminating the use of Generic tickets for this event.

I’m not sure on the status of PFS events right now, but they usually always sell out by the time of the Con.
So you want to try and purchase them now if you can. But if you can’t, you can always try to get in with generics all of the events. The only exception being the Special, due to the problems that happened with trying to get those in with generics last year.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I'm not surprised that I missed it, as I have not logged on until today to even look at the schedule. For many of us, real life is just as chaotic and fast paced as the games we play and enjoy.
However, when I went looking for the announcement on the Paizo Blog to find out what the name of the special event was, I noticed that is says, "on Friday night, over 1,000 Pathfinder Society members will participate in a massive, multi-table event called Siege of the Diamond City, which will place the noble heroes on the front lines of an Abyssal invasion of the crusader capital of Nerosyan, and fill the Indiana Convention Center's cavernous Sagamore Ballroom." But, the event listing only has a maximum number of 810.
So I have one question, and I'm really trying not to be too much of a thorn. Did the event hall reduce the number of seats available or will there be another 190+ seats opening up? I've been in on organizing large events at Gencon and I have seen things like this before, so I'm just curious. I will be checking the event as often as possible to see if any more tickets become available. Thanks again guys and gals for all of the hard work you do to bring us so much fun. See you at the con.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Well, there will also be GMs, not to mention the volunteers that will help run HQ during the event. That would probably be where your ~190 missing people comes from. It didn't say 1000 players, just members participating in the special. Its also possible they just rounded up for the blog post, that or they hadn't actually calculated exactly how many seats would be allowed.

![]() |

No generics makes me sad because it is hard to bring in casual gamers. I recall how great I thought it was when PFS sat everyone a few years back. It was the first time I'd really taken note of the wonderful attitude of the volunteers.
But boy do I ever understand the rationale for this decision after last year's snarl!

![]() ![]() ![]() |

While I am checking the event listing daily, I have yet to actually be on when a ticket opens up. Therefore, while I will continue to diligently check up on the availability for tickets, I figured I'd also put my name in the pot as one interested in getting a ticket if folks reading this thread end up with extras or decide to cancel.
EDIT: Also, I felt I should clarify that I'm not asking for a free ticket. I'll gladly pay the original ticket fee as compensation.

![]() |
This is my first GenCon, so I had no idea that this event would sell out immediately. Lesson learned.
I will continue to look for the ticket in the system to see if it appears. That said.... If there are any Sczarni who are looking to flip a ticket.... lilzaphod @ gmail . com . We don't have to tell, and I'll throw a few scheckels above list price to make it worth your time.
Thank you.

I too am looking for a single ticket.
Here's the story:
My brother, who has a lot of medical issues and is in a wheelchair, was just cleared to go to Gencon. He missed last year and thought he'd be unable to attend this year. I have a ticket for myself (and a few friends have tickets) but my brother would really like to be able to make it to the Special on Friday.
So, if you've got a ticket and would like your $$ back, I'd be really really happy to reimburse you, pay for shipping, and whatever else you think is fair...
I have been refreshing the event listing on the gencon site since finding out (late last night) that my brother would be able to come along. No luck there yet....
Thanks for looking!!!
