If you have a free badge (from volunteering, as a Paizo employee, etc) you are not eligible for the lottery or event registration. If you'd like to register as a player for lottery events or sign up for open registration games when that opens, you'll need to purchase a regular badge.
Why Not?
Because I volunteered for PFS and Card Game Demo I can't use my time I am not doing those to play the Lottery Events?
This was not the case last year, and If I knew this was going to happen this year I would not have volunteered.
I am hoping I am misunderstanding your statement above.

Actually looking at my volunteer Status, I do not qualify for a free Badge, so My badge was not giving to me for free.
My badge was bought for me so I should be able to play in the lotto events. Can this please be fixed?
That said, this will be the last year I volunteer at PaizoCon if volunteers can't participate in lottery events.

Never got an answer to this ...
I am attending with my 10 year old. There are not many gaming events that are below 13+.
How rigid are the age limits? When signing up for a session I don't imagine "age" is entered/verified ... but I would not want to show up and piss anyone off!
He's pretty mature, remembers plot points and names better than me (I need notes!) and he reads well beyond his age, but not yet being assimilated into homogeneous-adult-hood-culture his solutions are often non-orthodox.
Last, what are the age ratings on the coming PFS schedule?

PFS for one is almost universally all ages. We have a game downtown that has one table of adults and one table of kids between the ages of 8-14 and both tables play the same scenario. So for Society I wouldn't worry about the age limit.
For the others I would imagine that they have content that is rated to each age level, so if its something like 18+ there's probably going to be more RP that is adult language and situations and such. Though I wouldn't know for sure. You'd probably have to ask each GM directly. But Society is a great fall back.Sara Marie Customer Service Manager |

Someone bought mine for me, but I don't believe it's a volunteer or Paizo employee thing. Is there anyway to check if my badge is "normal"? I don't see anything when looking at the events that would let me select any of them.
Has your friend transferred your badge to your account? They need to do that to let you pick lottery options.
I think you'd know if you had volunteered to run events, and you (and we) would know that you were a Paizo employee...

There was a kickstarter run by FGG that had paizocon tickets for a certain pledge level.
The tickets granted to those individuals were supposed to be eligible for the lottery but they aren't working as intended. Gary has been working on that code. It will not be done today.
For those NOT in that special situation. If you don't see the buttons for selecting preferences for each event on the right of the page and you have a purchased badge, please let customer.service at paizo.com know.
Individuals granted free badges from volunteers, as exhibitors or other free guest badges are not eligible for the lottery or event registration.
If you have a free badge and wish to return it so that you can purchase a regular badge and therefore be eligible for the lottery and/or open event registration, please let us know at customer.service at paizo.com.

I guess my actual question is ...
Is the age listed for each event "required" or is it "recommended"?
I apologize for kind of avoiding this question. I've been trying to track down the best answer and unfortunately there isn't a hard and fast rule about this that will cover every game. It will depend on the kid, the GM and the game.
Our Pathfinder Society games are written for 13+. However, as others have indicated up thread, people younger that 13 can and do have a lot of fun at PFS games.
There are definitely some games on the schedule that I personally would not recommend for younger children. Example: Wes Schnieder or Ryan Macklin's horror games.
I think its going to be a matter of what you think, as a parent, that your kid can handle. Read through descriptions, use your discretion and good judgment and if you guys get into a game, contact the GM and double check that your kid will be welcome.
Remember, if you want you and your child to be in the same lotteried event, you will need to put a ticket on their account and add them as a buddy. If you only have one ticket to an event, there is only one spot at the table for you.

Thanks for the reply. That's good, there is no official restriction then, it's a suggested age. I will base it off the description.
He is ticketed and buddied ... just for clarification, since he's my buddy do I just have to register for events on my account and NOT on his ... or do I have to sign up for the same things on both accounts?

Wow, the Grimm game has transitioned to Pathfinder? Shizzle's getting serious. Hope I get in! XD
Actually, no. The Grimm game is still using the Grimm system (no experience necessary, all material provided).
I just failed to notice this error.
I'll send a message to Sara to see that this is cleared up.

Oh, alright. I did kinda wonder if it was an error, but it occurred to me it might represent some sort of tone shift as the kids become more attuned to the world. I gotta say, though, I'm glad. Grimm's too fun a system to go changing now. :)

We just rolled out a fix for the event schedule page—if it thinks you're ineligible to register for events, it now displays the reason.

Help! My son and I are both coming to PaizoCon, and I sent him a buddy request a few days ago, so we can register for the lottery together. But the link he got in his email just takes him to the PaizoCon general page, and doesn't accept or in any way affect the buddy request - it's still described as pending in my account. I tried withdrawing and re-sending it just now, and the same thing happened.
We've also looked through our paizo.com accounts, but there doesn't seem to be a way to buddy up through those either.
Any suggestions on how I can make him my buddy and have the web site accept it?

If I remember correctly, I ...
1) Requested a buddy from my page
2) Then from his account I went back to the event sign-up page
3) There I saw and accepted the request
It will show your buddy link on the event sign-up page.

Oh! That's a relief. I am volunteering most of the Con, but I did submit some Slot 7 Picks (I bought a badge before I volunteered and elected not to make a big deal of it).
I thought I was just out of luck completely. Now I might still get a game!
Jim, you should sign up for
"Sunday, July 7 09:00 AM – 02:00 PM Washington Ballroom #4-25: The Secrets Stones Keep" so I can meet you! :P I love your scenarios!Khelreddin |
Is there a place to read descriptions of the lottery events? I picked a bunch for myself and my son, and got into one I really wanted, but the other I got is one I don't recall the details of. They were described on the events schedule, but that now only shows Open Events. I mostly want to be sure I show up with the requisite materials, but a refresher on what the scenario is would be cool also.

Thanks for the help on finding those descriptions - I hadn't drilled down far enough to find them. (and ctrl+f was a helpful approach, thanks).
Now I've read them, I'm even more excited about the one I got (my son and I get to play in a game run by Gary McBride!), but not sure what to do about the other slot I got, since I'm fairly sure I didn't put in for it at all. I know I can try to trade it, and have put in a trade proposal, but I'm trying for two slots, so it will be tough (and I'm not even sure the trading system really accomodates that). I'd be just as happy giving up my two slots and going for a PFS game, but I'm also not sure how to do that within the system. Is there a way to just release my slots so people can grab them, in order to free up my Saturday morning to pick PFS games?

By my selected events (both lottery & open) there is a 'remove' button that should release your slots back into the wild. The trarding is really just for someone who wants to upgrade without risking loosing their game if they don't get in what they want, or as an incentive to someone who has a prized slot.

I am just now thinking about attending Paizocon 2013, primarily due to financing just becoming possible. Do I have any hope of getting into any PFS games?
Yes. Signups are for 6 people, but a 7th player is legal and at the discretion of people organizing the event. There may also be backup GMs available. You'll need to talk to the coordinators at the beginning of each session, but it is very likely that the Paizo staff can work many unscheduled people into tables.
Majuba |
7 player tables are at the discretion of the table, per the Guide v4.3. From what I've seen and heard, Paizo hasn't been seating 7-player tables (with rare exceptions) since Gen Con 2011 - to much rejoicing.
That said, Xot, you still have a great chance of getting into events - there should be a 'mustering crowd' to fill empty slots (and there were plenty of empties the last time I looked, plus sometimes people sleep in or don't show up).
Kobold Catgirl |
So I managed to get into two playings of the same game, but don't expect to have time for both (I'm double-conning with Everfree Northwest across the street). I had hoped to get ahold of some sort of schedule for EFNW before event trading ended, but I didn't, so I still don't know which of the two games is more convenient.
I really don't want to be the rude jerk who fails to attend one of the games and messes things up, but it looks like you can't drop events after Event Trading. So what? Do I just post a thread saying "Sorry!" and hope they'll be able to find another player? Or do I bite the bullet and attend both games so nothing gets messed up?
