After listening to Being's interview, it got me thinking about alignment and I wanted a definition and I came across one.

Website: Alignment Test

This also included an alignment test and I answered as my character would:

Quote:

You Are:

Chaotic Neutral

Chaotic Neutral- A chaotic neutral character follows his whims. He is an individualist first and last. He values his own liberty but doesn't strive to protect others' freedom. He avoids authority, resents restrictions, and challenges traditions. A chaotic neutral character does not intentionally disrupt organizations as part of a campaign of anarchy. To do so, he would have to be motivated either by good (and a desire to liberate others) or evil (and a desire to make those different from himself suffer). A chaotic neutral character may be unpredictable, but his behavior is not totally random. He is not as likely to jump off a bridge as to cross it. Chaotic neutral is the best alignment you can be because it represents true freedom from both society's restrictions and a do-gooder's zeal. However, chaotic neutral can be a dangerous alignment when it seeks to eliminate all authority, harmony, and order in society.

Ugh! I tried to answer the questions as I thought my main planned PC would but I'm not sure that a little of "me" didn't slip in there.

So a LG merchant. What a hassle for profit margins! ;)

Lawful Good- A lawful good character acts as a good person is expected or required to act. He combines a commitment to oppose evil with the discipline to fight relentlessly. He tells the truth, keeps his word, helps those in need, and speaks out against injustice. A lawful good character hates to see the guilty go unpunished. Lawful good is the best alignment you can be because it combines honor and compassion. However, lawful good can be a dangerous alignment when it restricts freedom and criminalizes self-interest.

As a monk, even from Katapesh, Harad Navar is Lawful Good. Most likely as an Enforcer, and only sometimes as Champion.

What I notice is that while my character leans chaotic, he's not dedicated enough to freedom itself to quite qualify. By the same token, he's more evil than good, but only just--he's generally helpful enough to keep things evened out. He's definitely not Lawful, but he's even enough that, by this scale, he is marked as Neutral.

Of course, the problem I have with this system remains--I don't follow the "even out" alignment philosophy. I'll stick with CN for now, but keep the results of this test in mind.

@Kobold Cleaver

I would not be too disturbed. A test like this one is far too limited in scope to determine an accurate or extensive "look" at a person's/character's alignment.

I blame Ultima IV.

Did the Hellknight character as best I could, although some of the questions I just wasn't sure on.

You Are:

Lawful Neutral

Lawful Neutral- A lawful neutral character acts as law, tradition, or a personal code directs him. Order and organization are paramount to him. He may believe in personal order and live by a code or standard, or he may believe in order for all and favor a strong, organized government. Lawful neutral is the best alignment you can be because it means you are reliable and honorable without being a zealot. The D&D style alignment system is a bit limited to really talk about the actions of a person.

I don't mean to slaughter a sacred cow around here but I'm not sure if it can accurately capture the actions of a player in a sandbox environment.

Like, if I proactively hunt and kill my enemies, that makes me evil. If, on the other hand, I proactively hunt my enemies because they will kill me if I give them the chance because they view me as evil, I'm just on the wrong side of the propaganda.

Just food for thought.

Oh, I think we all know that.

Pathfinder solves Euthyphro's Dilemma, at least within the game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euthyphro_dilemma

First Horn (objectivism): Good, Evil, Law, and Chaos are objective energy states in Golarion, and even the deities are subject to them. You do a certain action, your 'soul' picks up some of that corresponding energy.

Second Horn (divine fiat): The game master (dev team in PFO) acts as a sort of meta-deity, since they assign the G/E and L/C qualities of actions. Since they're doing so through code, they can't take your intent or situational ethics into account.

From your character's perspective, it's just a matter of reality that doing action X produces alignment shift Y. That's just how things are in Golarion, even if the results are sometimes disturbing. From a player perspective, you can ask GMs to clean up problem areas and loopholes when you disagree with the facts of life in Golarion. Still, if you act in ways that make your character evil, then your character is evil, because that's just how reality works in PFO. Whether it meshes with the sensibilities of someone from Earth is irrelevant to the setting.

I ran the full 'what character are you' test on myself.

Interesting. I tried to answer as one of my planned Destiny's Twins (the ranger; the other is likely to be a wizard) and came up True Neutral. Clearly she's a druid and not a ranger at all!

Quote:

True Neutral

A true neutral character does what seems to be a good idea. He doesn't feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to good vs. evil or law vs. chaos. Most true neutral characters exhibit a lack of conviction or bias rather than a commitment to neutrality. Such a character thinks of good as better than evil after all, he would rather have good neighbors and rulers than evil ones. Still, he's not personally committed to upholding good in any abstract or universal way. Some true neutral characters, on the other hand, commit themselves philosophically to neutrality. They see good, evil, law, and chaos as prejudices and dangerous extremes. They advocate the middle way of neutrality as the best, most balanced road in the long run. True neutral is the best alignment you can be because it means you act naturally, without prejudice or compulsion. However, true neutral can be a dangerous alignment when it represents apathy, indifference, and a lack of conviction.

Nah, rangers haven't had alignment restrictions since 2nd Edition. Neutral and evil rangers are perfectly acceptable.

See, I take exception to this tendency to attribute uncaring apathy as characteristic of the true neutral (NN). The NN character may care greatly, but not believe that the oppressive restrictions imposed by extreme law is best, nor that popular estimations of extreme good is correct, nor that popular opinions of evil are always right, and may cast a skeptical eye on the frivolity of chaos. Extremism gets in its own way: Moderation in all things is healthy.

The demand to 'take a stand' where only one of the extremes is accepted as a position is unhealthy. The moderate middle path is the most constructive way forward. By negotiating thesis and antithesis we build synthesis, where devotees of extremism ultimately get nothing built because they cannot join positions and always resist compromise.

Nice one, Bringsmillerlite. Being conflicted can be a side effect of growth and learning. It can also result from the struggle between will and desire.

As well as from between need and want.

I would prefer to look at it as LN(G).

Goblin Squad Member

Ended up with LG for my character as expected. Did the test for myself and I ended up a NG Human Ranger.

I wish this test asked less black-and-white questions. Like, "You have a prisoner who killed someone dear to you. Do you kill him, torture him, let him go because you did not really like the dead person much anyways, or turn him in to the authorities?"

This test is a bit more, "You meet a nice girl. Do you give her flowers, or tie her to the railroad tracks and twirl your mustache?"

Goblin Squad Member

Lawful Good Halfling Monk/Cleric (4th/4th Level)

Ability Scores:
Strength- 13
Dexterity- 15
Constitution- 14
Intelligence- 15
Wisdom- 15
Charisma- 14
Alignment:
Lawful Good- A lawful good character acts as a good person is expected or required to act. He combines a commitment to oppose evil with the discipline to fight relentlessly. He tells the truth, keeps his word, helps those in need, and speaks out against injustice. A lawful good character hates to see the guilty go unpunished. Lawful good is the best alignment you can be because it combines honor and compassion. However, lawful good can be a dangerous alignment when it restricts freedom and criminalizes self-interest.

Race:
Halflings are clever, capable and resourceful survivors. They are notoriously curious and show a daring that many larger people can't match. They can be lured by wealth but tend to spend rather than hoard. They prefer practical clothing and would rather wear a comfortable shirt than jewelry. Halflings stand about 3 feet tall and commonly live to see 150.

Primary Class:
Monks- Monks are versatile warriors skilled at fighting without weapons or armor. Good-aligned monks serve as protectors of the people, while evil monks make ideal spies and assassins. Though they don't cast spells, monks channel a subtle energy, called ki. This energy allows them to perform amazing feats, such as healing themselves, catching arrows in flight, and dodging blows with lightning speed. Their mundane and ki-based abilities grow with experience, granting them more power over themselves and their environment. Monks suffer unique penalties to their abilities if they wear armor, as doing so violates their rigid oath. A monk wearing armor loses their Wisdom and level based armor class bonuses, their movement speed, and their additional unarmed attacks per round.

Secondary Class:
Clerics- Clerics act as intermediaries between the earthly and the divine (or infernal) worlds. A good cleric helps those in need, while an evil cleric seeks to spread his patron's vision of evil across the world. All clerics can heal wounds and bring people back from the brink of death, and powerful clerics can even raise the dead. Likewise, all clerics have authority over undead creatures, and they can turn away or even destroy these creatures. Clerics are trained in the use of simple weapons, and can use all forms of armor and shields without penalty, since armor does not interfere with the casting of divine spells. In addition to his normal complement of spells, every cleric chooses to focus on two of his deity's domains. These domains grants the cleric special powers, and give him access to spells that he might otherwise never learn. A cleric's Wisdom score should be high, since this determines the maximum spell level that he can cast.

When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.

I'm kinda surprised...

True Neutral

True Neutral- A true neutral character does what seems to be a good idea.

At least the class test didn't tell you to be a wizard...

I typically loathe spell casting, but somehow I'm supposed to be a wizard.

I'm good with that. Planning on being a Good Soldier and a Lawful Good Cleric. I can imagine they'll both be a bit of a tightass though. Hope they aren't too bothersome.

A test like this can be highly inaccurate. Especially when my "real" answers aren't on the list of choices.

However, lawful neutral can be a dangerous alignment when it seeks to eliminate all freedom, choice, and diversity in society.

I feel the same way. I'm fairly certain I know which of my answers resulted in that tick of Evil, and I completely disagree with it.

There was another question that was particularly bad. I should be able to "ignore my family elders" without "besmirching their reputation".

Grand Lodge Goblin Squad Member

I just did the full character one as well, answering a few of the alignment questions slightly differently.

Again, plenty of questions that don't allow you to select the answer I would actually want. Some multiple choice would even be an All of them, despite them being contradictory at first glance. Others would be None, despite the apparent "need" for people to always fall in one of the defined "categories"

Race:
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.

Primary Class:
Druids- Druids gain power not by ruling nature but by being at one with it. They hate the unnatural, including aberrations or undead, and destroy them where possible. Druids receive divine spells from nature, not the gods, and can gain an array of powers as they gain experience, including the ability to take the shapes of animals. The weapons and armor of a druid are restricted by their traditional oaths, not simply training. A druid's Wisdom score should be high, as this determines the maximum spell level that they can cast.

Secondary Class:
Rangers- Rangers are skilled stalkers and hunters who make their home in the woods. Their martial skill is nearly the equal of the fighter, but they lack the latter's dedication to the craft of fighting. Instead, the ranger focuses his skills and training on a specific enemy a type of creature he bears a vengeful grudge against and hunts above all others. Rangers often accept the role of protector, aiding those who live in or travel through the woods. His skills allow him to move quietly and stick to the shadows, especially in natural settings, and he also has special knowledge of certain types of creatures. Finally, an experienced ranger has such a tie to nature that he can actually draw on natural power to cast divine spells, much as a druid does, and like a druid he is often accompanied by animal companions. A ranger's Wisdom score should be high, as this determines the maximum spell level that he can cast.

If you're given a choice between chocolate or vanilla, is the question inaccurate because strawberry wasn't available?

You're presented with certain limited options, and the foresight to tell what the ultimate result of your choice will turn out to be. In the test, as in the game, your alignment is based on a series of Situation>Options>Result scenarios. 'Intent' isn't in there because there's no way for a computer to judge intent. Sitting down to play with a live GM is a different kind of game.

Sometimes you just take the option you dislike least (as political voting often is). Refusing to choose because strawberry isn't on the list just means you get nothing, and in game terms, that's analogous to just logging out.

The test does have some issues with wording that arguably invalidate it. However, to have a 1 or 2 in some areas is not abnormal - most tests take this into account (it just represents that your answer was at an extreme of the curve). I also took the alignment test and came out at N/N.

That's the point. It isn't an open-ended survey meant to cover the breadth of human diversity. Alignment in the game will have a lot more in its series of 'questions' but it's run by a computer and is therefore literally binary.

Race:
Elves are known for their poetry, song, and magical arts, but when danger threatens they show great skill with weapons and strategy. Elves can live to be over 700 years old and, by human standards, are slow to make friends and enemies, and even slower to forget them. Elves are slim and stand 4.5 to 5.5 feet tall. They have no facial or body hair, prefer comfortable clothes, and possess unearthly grace. Many others races find them hauntingly beautiful.

Class:
Wizards- Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art.

Nihimon's point buy isn't that spectacular compared to many others here, actually. The average stat block in this test is a rather heroic 13-14-13-15-15-14 (NG Human Wiz5), which makes me wonder...

I'm more impressed by the numbers of people with multiple 15's in their physical stats, not to mention the lvl 7-8's (i suppose that means 40+ years with 'more life experience than anyone else', which means there must be loads of stories to tell).

But Nihimon, I'm ready for a wizarian duel anytime, NG elven wiz5 to NG elven wiz5 (just don't expect me to be that in game, i do enough divination and compulsion magic at work).

I manipulated the survey. I didn't take it multiple times or anything, but I realized they were (in my opinion incorrectly) equating "education" with "knowledge", so I reinterpreted those questions and answered in character.
