...'cause RPG Superstar ain't no riddle, man. To me it makes good, good sense!
Apologies to AC/DC, but game design ain't noise pollution.
So get off the fence and submit an item this year!
Seriously, I say this every year. Entering is winning. The act of creation and submission is itself a big accomplishment.
I started Necromancer Games in my home. I had no idea what I was doing. I had passion for the game, a bunch of ideas and the BALLS to take the risk. I took it. I learned a lot. I believed in myself. I want all of you to believe in yourselves and give it a shot.
I know I'm the rah rah guy, but you can't win if you don't try. And with Superstar, trying is winning.
Believe in yourself.
The contest is anonymous. NO ONE has to know you entered. So there is no reason not to try. And if you dont make it and dont want feedback, you wont get any.
I guarantee you it will be an amazing experience.
Please, if you are out there sittin' on the fence, get off your ass and get down here. It is a rocking good time.
Clark

Can you make your mark in the gaming biz without going through RPG Superstar? Sure.
Can you VASTLY improve your chances of carving out a niche in professional game design by entering this contest, WHETHER OR NOT YOU WIN?
Ab.
So.
Lutely.
You can't win if you don't play, so put on your war paint and scream like you mean it! All it takes is the guts to hit 'send' and you could be on your way to livin' the dream.

On a more general note, I can only add my voice to the chorus crying: "JUST DO IT!!"
One caveat, though: Do your homework, and prepare for the possibility that you might actually make it. Every year, we see a bunch of people who are so stunned at making the Top 32 that they are caught completely by surprise and deliver a rushed submission for round 2. And believe me, that round 2 submission deadline comes rushing on like a runaway freight train at a time when you are likely too caught up in thrill of having made it in.
So do yourself a favor, and plan ahead - for all the rounds.

It will be weird not entering this year, considering I've submitted something every other year.
Echoing Jacob' s advice, and something I did last year that I didn't the previous years, plan ahead for the subsequent rounds. In recent years, the judges have given the basic rules for the next rounds, so you aren't as caught off guard. Also, the contest always has a monster round (the only mysteries are the CR and the restriction on creature types), an encounter round, and the adventure pitch. The schedule is extremely tight, so any preplanning you can do during the voting phases helps immensely.
Good luck to all of you entering, and I hope many of you try out!

You can still take part Mike - you can provide all the hopefuls in the feedback threads (as well as the finalists) the benefits of your design expertise.
I, for one, have always found your posts informative and useful.

Listen to Mike - that's some good advice right there. Even though the whole competition takes months, the writing schedule is very tight. One nitpick, sometimes the monster round is swapped out for an NPC villain round, as in 2011.

I must admit I am half expecting that NPC Villain type thing this year with the release of the NPC Codex.
I'm trying to plan ahead but being very wary of those little twists that might throw huge spanners into my works.
What I have done so far are some rough sketches of maps - an overland map, a dungeon map, a couple of encounter areas with interesting environments (I hope interesting anyways) but I haven't gone into specifics, just basic outlines for now.
This weekend, I'm sketching out some NPC motives and backgrounds but again not going so far as to stat them out, assign powers, etc and I will probably knock up 2 or 3 monster concepts in draft too.
As an aside, to get everyone even more excited ...
This weekend - Sat 24th Nov thru Sun 25th Nov is the LAST weekend of November!
It is now really almost upon us!
Grin.
