Help build a flying ship.

Advice

Don't worry about price for the moment. I'm just looking for ideas.

So far it's going to be a specialized folding boat / mages magnificent mansion item with a permanent overland flight when in boat form.

Any ideas on what to add or resources for such an idea?

isn't "airship" listed in UE's transportation section?

It is, but an airship doesn't fold up to take with you.

Which function(s) of a "flying ship" do you with to focus on?

  • Means of transportation for people
  • Means of transportation for cargo.
  • Mobile artillery platform.
  • Gunboat policies.
  • Conversation piece.
  • Place of residence.
  • Discovery or scouting vessel.
  • Other.

Multipurpose. I plan to make the hold extra dimensional, so space isn't a major issue.

I imagine it's a mobile artillery platform to be used in places like the world wound.

Essentially it's the heavy artillery. Though I'd like it to also function as a normal ship as needed.

on a related note, are there any good rules for customizing an airship in the SRD anywhere? found the airship entry, but virtually no info on it otherwise...

theres a 3.5 book on airship stuff, but its very, very specific on how to build and maintain them (they're very customizeable though).

but yeah, TCG, look up various magical items/spell effects you want to add, prepare the materials for your ship, and make it per the magic item creation rules(are there rules for cost scaling up with size or am i just imagining those)?

Any artillery, etc is going to fold up into the shop when it shrinks.

I'm looking for creative ideas more than specific mechanical how-to's.

For example robe of endless twine for unlimited rigging or ropes of fantastic lengths.

You'll probably want items with permanent purify drink and food on them - it would keep water and food fresh on long trips.

Some of the items in my practical magic thread might be helpful too: interior lighting with continual flame, freezing units with ray of frost probably some sort of interior heating and cooling. Unseen servant to keep things clean...

Don't forget to have at least one lifeboat with constant Featherfall.

No lifeboats. I don't want my crew to be getting ideas about not giving 110%. :-)

modified folding airship

1 a 12 inch by 6 inch by 6 inch box
2 a 30 foot by 10 foot by 10 foot air ship
3 a 20 foot by 20 foot by 10 foot floating paltform

make a spool of endless twine in the cargo hold for your rope needs.
get a table with creat food and drink, or hero's feast useable once or so a day, or make bed's with Dream feast. unseen servants as cabin boys.

Have the interior of your ship built using the Expedition Pavilion set up and you could have a 30 by 10 by 10 ship outside and 90 by 30 by 10 inside.

Try the free downloadable players guide tot he Skull and Shackles AP. Some good stuff there for ships. Browse through some of the newer spells for ships as well.

Maybe some permanent Unseen Servants or animated objects to crew it? Not sure how fantastical you want to get...

Don't confuse dedication with sane back-up plans. :-P

Have two sterns and no bow to confuse any would be attackers.

I was thinking halfling sized permanent animated objects with a few ranks in sailor as the basic crew. Though there would be sentient sailors to keep the constructs properly tasked.

If the airship is going to be mobile artillery, you need siege engines! Trebuchets and cannons and balllistae oh my! A good trebuchet also handily solves the problem of how to dispose of waste/trash/casualties of war.

The figurehead should be a trained gargoyle!

I think someone on board is going to need to be able to cast shrink item. Nothing like a hold full of balista as needed.

for space look at Treasure Stitching all your heavy stuff into no wieght. just a 10 by 10 canvas tarp.

You could Treasure Stitch all your stuff into the sails!

You could also have your own portrait embroidered into the Jolly Roger, and use Enter Image as a sort of Magic Crow's Nest. If you could make a wondrous item that lets you cast Enter Image attached to the base of the sail, it'd work just like a periscope.

Why use balista when you could just have wands of scorching ray/fireball/ligthning bolt? Maybe some weather controlling devices like a control wind helm?

There will be wands also, but a warship holds up to 43 siege weapons. Plus with fabricate and a cheap supply source the ammo is effectively infinite. Wands are great, but 20 boulders flying off of a side is rather devestating and cheaper than Wands.

Oh, and there will be an orb of storms on board. :-)

You should make your airship intelligent. This has many benefits, including:

-- you can give it the ability to fly without resort to rules-bending overland flight & permanency. (It may not be able to carry anything given that it has no Strength score, but that's a problem with the original spells, too.)
-- you can make it able to walk at 10', which is slow but means it can do fun things on the ground like overrun enemies (depending on its size, this can be incredibly lethal)
-- it gains senses (up to 120' darkvision and blindsense) and can act as lookout
-- it can illuminate its surroundings at will like a magic weapon
-- you can give it the ability to cast up to 4th level spells, or teleport
-- you can make it able to talk, and who doesn't want a ship with a sentient talking figurehead?

I've been wanting to make a magic wagon, but the rules are really terribly unclear.

What he wants is not an airship, but a Fold Up TARDIS with wings.

That's a good idea, but I'd rather it not talk. I'll look into it. Thanks.

If the tarsis had cannons, yes. :-)

I've decided to add a shapechange trap only usable by those that are arcane marked by the maker(me) or one other designate

Say NO to Intelligent Airships!

An Instant Fortress with Overland Flight.

I have no idea why you posted this. I'm well aware of what buoyancy is. I was planning on overcoming this necessity with magic.

omg. so simple, yet so brilliant. I'm going to use that.

You can toss in plane shift and a portal to a bound demiplane.

'nother interesting idea a friend pointed out to me: rig up some immoveable rods along the frame of the ship so you can press them all at once--useful for when you need to stop dead very quickly (avoid crashing into stuff, possibly to dodge siege fire, stop from falling to your death if someone dispels the overland flight) and works with:

to set up quick direction changes.

or if you wanna just chill out in the sky and "drop anchor" for those (few) times you don't wanna fold it up and take it with you, like when you wanna take a rest out of reach of those pesky monsters.
