Miniatures on the Cheap

Awhile ago I saw this video from bensrpgpile (good stuff if you haven't watched it or read his blog you should). So I went on ebay and picked up over 100 mage knight miniatures for around $40 (shipping was free). A friend of mine who used to play Mage Knight also gave me about 50 or so figures from the mage knight line. Some of them truly look bad and I didn't bother with those. However, some of them are pretty sweet. So following in the footsteps of Ben I rebased a bunch. I bought some cheap bases ken_of_york and started basing. Here are a few.

I did a very similar thing, but with a lot more minis. I think I ended up with almost 500 re-based MageKnight minis. I just rebased mine on black wooden disks, which were just pennies per disk.

If you're interested in cheap minis, there are lots of ways to build out your collection on the cheap. I pick up dinosaurs and animals at dollar or toy stores and either use them as they are, or cut them up to make my own "Frankenmonsters".

Very nice. That's a great deal and they look fabulous with the new bases.

Funny this thread pops up now, talking of cheap minis: I just found my bag of Safari Toob critters I bought a little while ago. Safari Toobs are toys for kids -- they have various collections of different kinds of animals. I bought one of horses, one of "fantasy creatures," and one of dragons. Each of the toobs, which has a bunch of minis, usually costs around $10 MSRP and I got them all on sale for much cheaper. The scaling isn't perfect but it's close enough, especially for cheap minis. I especially was glad to get the horse ones because it's often hard to find just plain horses in normal mini lines that are worth the price.

Do bear in mind that if you pick up the Toobs, the scaling VARIES--even within the same toob. For example, in the fantasy creatures toob, there's a merman and merfolk that for 28 mm scale would be giants, but are in the same package as a unicorn that is perfect size for 28 mm scale. Don't get the toobs of humans as they are all too big (unless you need giants). But a lot of the animals like the horses are fine. The dragons are a little small but still useful (and perfect for younger dragons from Medium to Large size).

Where did you get the wooden disks?

The giant's base is made from a wooden coaster I got from the dollar store. It had cork glued to it that came right off. A bag of 4 cost a dollar. I used Hirst Arts blocks to make the ruined wall.

DQ, I think I also have every toob you mentioned. But as for horses, I have a bunch I got from US Toy that are perfect sized and I've used them for making pegasi, nightmares, unicorns and centaurs. Luckily I have a US Toy that is right on my way to work so I get lots of miniature animals, dinosaurs and bugs from there. They are a lot cheaper than the toobs.

The dragon toob is actually pretty interesting since many of the dragons are sort of anthropomorphized "dragons" and can work well as dragonborn or hybrid dragon creatures. I put mini Halloween bat wings on the sea dragon and it's a nice blue dragon now.

Asphere, I purchased four sizes of wooden disk from a place like this website and used them as bases for my MageKnight minis as well as basing my own custom sculpted minis, toy animals and dinosaurs, etc. I first painted them all black on both sides, then cut circles of foam of the same size using a circle punch and glued the foam on the bottom.

You can see some of the results on my blog. If you use the category filter for miniatures you can see a ton of cheap minis I've made and used in my games.
