Nice work, Patrik.

I just finished sculpting a gargantuan ulgurstasta and a colossal overworm for my Age of Worms campaign. I will hopefully get them painted in the next couple of days, and post some pictures.

Oh, I look forward of seeing those!

Ulgurstasta

Notes: This is the first miniature I made. I'm still in the process of painting the colossal Overworm, which turned out a little better than this first attempt.

I sculpted it with self hardening clay, primed it and painted it. For this one I didn't build any kind of armature. I ran out of clay part way through, so I didn't get to add the arms on until yesterday. At that point the rest of it was set and dried, so I'm not sure how well the arms have bonded with the of the rest of sculpture. Hopefully they won't fall off. I used my regular acrylic paints (the ones I use when doing a painting, as opposed to my mini paints) for the base coats. However, I discovered they give a more glossy finish than my mini paints. However, I think that works fine for this creature.

It was pretty fast sculpt, as I wanted it ready for this week's session- I did during the two hours when my daughter takes her nap, and the painting was fairly fast as well. There's definitely some room for improvement, but all in all I'm fairly happy with how it turned out. My main regret is I didn't have any clay left to make teeth, and I only got the extra clay and wire I would have needed to add them after it had hardened. I suppose I can try and make some little teeth out of green stuff and then glue them on. I might get to that.

Here's the Overworm:

Overworm

This one was also made of clay. I used a thick armature wire to create the spiral shape and then added the clay to the wire. In retrospect I should have used two wire and braided them together to make a stronger armature.

Oh yeah, the overworm also took about 2 hours to sculpt (again I did it during my daughter's nap), and a similar amount of time to paint- probably 5 hours of work in total.

I'd actually like to make a mould of this one and do some resin casts, so that I could make a bunch of them. However it would require a multi part mould, and I don't have very much experience with mould making, so I'm not sure exactly how to do it- I need to do some research.

Finally, here's the Kyuss mini I sculpted yesterday. It took about 3.5-4 hours. I haven't primed or painted it yet. I was pretty happy with how it turned out, except that the overall proportions are stalkier than I originally intended. He looks a bit more like a giant jaws than I'd like, but fixing that would basically require me to do him again, which might happen eventually.

Kyuss

Cool figures, I'm sure they'll make for memorable encounters!

Don't think I'll finish and photograph any more minis this weekend so my status report arrives one day early.

I declare this week (and probably the weeks to come) Old School Painting Week! A big package arrived from the Otherworld Miniatures Indiegogo campaign so now I have to mow through alot of old school looking miniatures. First up is the Human Male Fighter accompanied by two War Dogs.

I also made a bittersweet discovery when painting the fighter. I learned that I could cut corners and cheat abit and still end up with a very acceptable end result. Great news for my productivity although not so much for my advancement as a painter (although I can concentrate on that when I’ve finished all my unpainted miniatures, which at the moment are 579 in number).

Continuing with the old school theme this week brings the male human cleric. I had hoped to finish the thief and magic-user as well, but a shipment from Hasslefree Miniatures distracted me. Hopefully I can get a few miniatures finished next week.

So, when you say quickdips ... what do you mean exactly?

It's a method to get decent results very quickly. I use the following steps:

1) Prime the mini with white
2) Basecoat
3) Black line
4) Dip the mini in the quick dip. You can make your own but I use the Army Painter's Quick Shade and then shake off the access
5) Let it dry for 24ish hours
6) Use a matt sealer to get the gloss off
7) Finished!

The Army Painter has a pretty good guide with their own quick shade here.

You don't get the same results as if you shade and highlight, but it's decent enough and soooooooo fast.

A successful week (with abit of a snag) with four finished figures! I’m quite pleased with Marina and Hrothgar (who marks my 200th painted miniature by the way \o/), disappointed with Wolf and fairly neutral to the thief.

The problem with Wolf came about during assembly. When I tried to glue the head in place the pin I placed was abit off and wouldn't work. I tried to rectify by using some liquid green stuff but managed only to make things worse. A bunch of paint came off as well when I struggled and things didn't really work out the way I wanted them to. So, not wanting to start all over and not willing to put all that much effort in what remained, I just decided to finish it as fast as possible and move over to the next.

Woops, noticed that I wrote a post last week but forgot to actually post it. So, with one week delay, here's last weeks progress.

Continuing to work with the first wave from Otherworld Miniatures IndieGoGo campaign. With the entry this week the Male Human Magic User I now have a complete adventuring party. I also finished some loot for them to aquire.

The first finished miniature of the week was a bonus in one of my purchaces at Darksword Miniatures. It nothing that I thought would see any use but this week there's a semi celebration that it was six months ago that the biggest roleplaying game forum in Sweden had its tenth birthday. And everybody is encouraged to bring a gift which will be included in a raffle. So I thought that I'd paint a miniature, and since I won't perticulary miss the mouse cleric (I don't play any mouse related roleplaying games that need miniatures:), it was the perfect choice. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out.

And since I wanted to complete something for myself as well, I ran through the gnome priest from the Stonehaven Gnome Adventurers kickstarter. A quick paintjob that turned out pretty good.

Currently working on my 1000 pt. Deathguard army.

Specifically working on my converted Chaos space marine Lord of nurgle on bike, and armed with Black mace, and the mark of nurgle, bike squad. Have undercoated and done the first layer on the heads, torsos, and legs for the bikers, as well as their bikes. Have undercoated the lord's head, torso, legs and arms.

Have completed painting seven of the ten plague marines for the army(with the exception of their back packs). They need to be based properly too.

The remaining three plague marines have had head, torso and legs assembled, and undercoated.

Not alot of time to paint last week, so I pulled a easy mini from the pool and a few brush strokes later I had a finished male dwarf fighter from Otherworld Miniatures. Also managed to do some quickdips sunday evening.

This week brings more Hasslefree Miniatures. And two really cool ones to boot. It’s the troll slaying duo of Hasslefarian the Troll Slayer and Hayden.

I'm working on a Reaper set of an orc family: two little boys and a pregnant mother carrying a baby. This one is just for fun. I'm also working on a Reaper dwarf thief that I am using for an alchemist character. There aren't a lot of dagger wielding dwarves.

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 39
This week I add another Otherworld dungeon delving miniature to my ranks. It’s the Dwarven Mercenary which is a indiegogo campaign only figure. I’m quite happy with how he turned out, except for the hammer. I should have done something different with it plus it came pretty banged up from transportation, and my atempts to nullify that failed.

The mercenary is joined by my first Reaper Miniature in a long while. It’s Slipshadow the thief whom I dug up from the depths of my unpainted pile because I thought he would make a decent representation of one of my PCs: Tristan Clederwas in the Barrowmaze Campaign I participate in.

It was a similar reason that made me finish the last figure for this week: a spear wielding kobold from Otherworld’s Kobold Commando box. It will represent Knix, the bestest kobold ever and one of Tristan’s henchmen.

I got my big box of Reaper Bones a few weeks ago but they have been kind of neglected since then. Trying to rectify that somewhat I put some of them to the dip. Didn’t come out all that great but at least they’re done. The zombie figures are kinda cool and I think I’ll have to get some more.

Scarab Sages

Dotting this post, as I get back into painting.
I've converted a Citadel Giant, to have 6 arms and got him in a good pose.
He's my attempt at the Ebon Overgod from AOW, which I thought needed a 'mini' to emphasise how badass he was. He had to make his tabletop debut in just a primer coat, but since I went to the trouble of putting him together, I should finish him.

Two pictures loaded, more to follow later from different angles, and to show the first basecoats.

Starting out october with the fantastic sculpt Gwen, from Hasslefree Miniatures. I'm quite pleased with the result except for that I failed to water the paint when I did parts of her face, so there are some rough spots there. That faboulous mini is followed by a quick one. The Treasure Hoard from the Bones packet.

I also managed to burn through a Goblin Archer and Terezinya’s Familiar from Reaper Miniatures along with 8 rats from the Reaper Bones KS.

They are the bases that come with the rats. Which is really cool, much better than most of the other Bones bases.

PS Wow, they are nicely painted. :D

Yes, that is the bases that are apart of the miniature. The kobolds (inc soon?) includes the same bases as well. I was actually pleasantly surprised with how many of the Reaper Bones that came with workable bases.

Once I finally have mine(customes!!!!), one of my first tasks will be to remove them from their bases, and putting them on citadel miniatures round bases.

Don’t know what happened but this week wasn’t very good. It started out good with me finishing the really cool Male Halfling Fighter (with quite nice results as well), but after that not much happened. I realised yesterday that I wouldn’t be able to finish any of the other minis I’m working on (that I have higher hopes for), so in a panic I grabbed the living flaming sphere, a DDM figure I’ve had on my desk for a loooong time, and the Reaper Bones fire elemental familiar. A couple of flames, how hard could that be? Harder than I thought apparently, since I’m not at all pleased with the result. But the important thing is that they’re done and I can move on.

The Bones II Kickstarter has unlocked bases that are nearly identical to those used by the Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures / Pathfinder Battles, pre-painted mini's. (Just in case you like a clean base option).

Yeah, those are pretty awful bases to from what I have seen.
The basic 40k bases are the base line for me, but I might go up to privateer press's warmachine bases. PC models will probably be going on resin patterned bases.

Prelude to Henchmen week! I missed the opportunity to take photos last week. Since I “only” have access to my mobile camera I need daylight to take decent shots, and daylight is ending earlier and earlier here :/

Last week I rekindled a memory of why I dislike miniatures from Games Workshop. They’re expensive and poorly detailed. But they’re (almost) the only ones that does war dancers so when I needed a miniature for my war dancer character I had little choice. Decent result.

* War Dancer, from Games Workshop

Then there was a bunch of quickdips. Plenty of nice miniatures to use as henchmen!

* Farmer, from DDM - Picture

* Lantern Bearer, from DDM - Picture
* Scourge Hellknight Paralictor, from Pathfinder Battles - Picture

It’s henchmen week! Managed to finish three cool miniatures to be used as henchmen. Results vary from decent to pretty nice. I’m especially pleased with the Pack bearer from Otherworld Miniatures, which is a wonderful miniature.

* Mule Handler, from Otherworld Miniatures

Managed to paint the Male Fighter with Sword from Darksword Miniatures before october ended. I'm rather pleased with the result, especially since it didn't take all that long to finish.

* Male Fighter with Sword, from Darksword Miniatures
Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

Finishing october with the Human Male Bard from Otherworld Miniatures. There's a few things that could have been better with this one as I wanted it finished more than I wanted it good. Decent result though, enough for tabletop.

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 44
Starting up with the last of my henchmen from Otherworld Miniatures indiegogo campaign (first wave): The Lantern Bearer. I've dedicated much of this weeks painting time to finish quickdip figures since I got my eye on a few more that I really want. So I figured that I have to prove to myself that I can finish some of the ones that I already have. Hence this guy didn't get the attention he deserve. He could have used more work but I'm pretty pleased with how he turned out. I also made a quick paintjob to finish the last of the treasure items as well.

* Lantern Bearer, from Otherworld Miniatures

Quickdips!

Those otherworld minis look really good! I like the lantern flame effect you painted.

Thanks!

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 46
I wanted to get more done this week but all I ended up with was a bunch of semi finished miniatures, mostly for quickdipping. The one regular mini I managed to complete was the Male Human Paladin from Otherworld Miniatures. He was kind of a rushjob. Now that I see the photos I think I should have worked more on the Face. And I’m not good at freehand. Not at all. But I thought that the shield looked quite empty and wanted to do something at least. It’s supposed to be a tower...

The quickdips are some of the skeletons from the first Reaper Kickstarter. I should have paid more attention to the blood splatter on their weapons.

* Male Human Paladin, from Otherworld Miniatures

Quickdips!
* Skeletal Archers, from Reaper Bones, Picture
* Skeletal Spearmen, from Reaper Bones, Picture
* Skeletal Swordmen, from Reaper Bones, Picture

First off: I did manage to finish some quickdips week 46, but not in time to take a photo. So here are the miniatures not included in the week 46 update.

* Crazed Kuo-Toas, from DDM, Picture
* Gnoll Claw Fighter, from DDM, Picture
* Kuo-Toas, from DDM, Picture
* Succubus, from Pathfinder Battles, Picture

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 47
Which brings me to week 47, which was a somewhat productive week. Managed to finish two of the Otherworld Miniatures figures (getting closer and closer to completion!): the Dwarven Cleric and the Halfling Thief. As well as some quickdips.

* Dwarven Cleric, from Otherworld Miniatures
Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3
* Halfling Thief, from Otherworld Miniatures

* Arronax Endymion, from Pathfinder Battles, Picture
* Skeletal Legionare, from DDM, Picture
* Skeletal Warrior, from DDM, Picture
* Skeleton, from DDM, Picture
* Wereshark, from Pathfinder Battles, Picture

As I did have the three skeletons in “just dip form” (I didn’t repaint them first, just quickdipped) as well I thought it would be fun with a bit a few comparison pictures.

* Skeletal Legionare, from DDM, Picture

Love this thread. Did you get the otherworld minis in their kick starter?

Yep, I went in o the highest level. Still waiting for the henchmen and female adventurers series to be delivered.

Patrik’s Miniature Painting Project 2013, week 48
I had hoped to be more productive this week but I only managed to finish one regular miniature in time to photograph it: the Dwarven Thief from Otherworld Miniatures.

* Dwarven Thief, from Otherworld Miniatures
Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3

And four quickdipped miniatures (two of each kind):
* Pseudodragons, from DDM, Picture (I must have held the spraycan to close to the blue on when I primered it, or it was just a bad copy because the green one had more detail to it)
* Troglodyte Thugs, from DDM, Picture

So here's the goblin I painted at Sean's "How to Paint Bones" seminar at Paizocon. This was the first mini I had painted since the late 70s (when all I had was Tester's paints (oh the joy).

Not the best pics (camera phone) and they all need re-basing/flocking.

After Paizocon, I did not hop into any of the Bones minis I had until this weekend.

The second mini I painted ...

The third mini I painted ...

And I started on the Gibbering Mouther mini this weekend as well (but is no way near done enough to have a pic posted).

Sean, thanks for the seminar at PaizoCon 2013. Hoping to see a repeat for 2014.

Cool! Have you tried photographing the miniatures in daylight? I'm stuck with a mobile phone camera as well and all photos of miniatures I take without daylight comes out real grainy.

Like last time I did manage to finish one more miniature after the photo opportunity for week 48 had passed. I tried numerous times to get a good photo but this is the best I managed.

Things are slowing down as I approach the new year. Two finished miniatures this week:

* Human Male Barbarian, from Otherworld Miniatures
Picture 1, Picture 2, Picture 3
* Nadia of the Blade, from Reaper Miniatures
Picture 1, Picture 2

I’m two minis short of completing 100 minis during 2013. I hope I can get that done next week, since I won’t have any time to paint the following two weeks.
