So, we have a succubus on a Material Plane. Her mission is to damn as many mortals as possible to go to Abyss by turning them Chaotic Evil. She'll use any means possible. How do you think does a succubus usually do that? What are the common but effective/proved tactics or methods most succubi use? Obviously I don't mean PG-13 stuff, but actual things for adults. We're speaking about a demon after all, and a very cunning one at that.

Start a cult. Or, better yet, coopt an existing one.
Use of Dominate Person will allow her to casually get a credible local figure under her personal control, and Charm Person will allow her to establish herself as such a figure rapidly as well. Once she's done that, she can really get to work.
With some established trust as a power base, she can start to bring people into the fold using al the tactics real cults do (Charm Person makes for some of the best 'love bombing' ever if used properly, for example, and some indescribably good sex can only help).
These steps can be skipped if you can, instead, coopt an existing cult (easily done if their leader is susceptible to either Dominate Person or a bit of a succubus's gentle persuasion).
Once they're in, and the cult's going, she has them commit increasingly depraved acts, culminating in an initiation ritual that is something so taboo (cannibalism, the murder and/or rape of children, etc.) that the new member will never be accepted again outside the cult if it's found out. Once this has been started, you can even force people to do the initiation and they'll still be bound to the cult, or feel that way, since they'll feel on some deep level, that nobody else will ever accept them. This is another tactic used by real groups with great success.
Then, of course, they spread the cult.
Or that's the one that leaps immediately to mind.

Take on the forms of various people (priests, authority figures, respected pillars of the community) and seduce other people (preferably other married people or other scandalous targets, like family members, or temple virgins or whatever) in their guises, thereby framing them for the infidelities that have been committed by the succubus, causing all sorts of unpleasant fallout for all concerned if these secrets get revealed. (With the secrets being kept, for those who are willing to do various little corrupting favors, from time to time, dragging them deeper and deeper into a moral abyss and degrading their sense of self.)
Bonus, the seducees may get knocked up with half-demon-spawn, and the parents could be brainwashed via magic and mundane techniques over the months of pregnancy into being insanely protective of their demon-spawn, resulting in a town littered with people willing to do *anything* to protect the demon-children in their midst.
Between detect thoughts, polymorph and charm person, it's crazy easy for a succubus to arrange various crimes of passion. Find out that the stablehand has a hopeless crush on the legate's daughter? Take the form of the legate's daughter and seduce him into a passionate and surprisingly violent encounter. Then let him stew for a week while the real legate's daughter right and properly ignores him and treats him like the faceless social inferior he is. Then take her form again and publically humilate him, before flouncing out, before he can react. Properly primed, he'll end up violently confronting the real legate's daughter and possibly even kill her, for her 'cruelty.' Whether he succeeds or fails, he'll probably be hanged for it.
A half-dozen such little schemes could be in motion at any given time, as the succubus arranges for jealous spouses to accuse each other of infidelities, for brother to fight brother over mistaken beliefs that they'd cheated with each others wives, for family patriarchs or matriarchs to be accused of scandalous acts with young relatives, etc.
Perceived acts of betrayal leads to feuds, to very real acts of betrayal, and, in some cases, to violence.
And if the succubus has arranged a cult, as mentioned in previous posts, of 'helpful' people who might be able to help an aggrieved spouse or lover or relative to take revenge on someone that they believe has spurned or betrayed them, well, so much the better. Some 'betrayed' individuals might be willing to engage in some underground rituals of dubious provenance to call upon dark forces to punish their 'unfaithful' loves, and the succubus' detect thoughts will help her to target the most likely to accept such an offer, which she might have made more palatable with her recent outing of the village priest as having slept with half of the married women he was 'couseling.' (Not that he got to enjoy any of that, since it was the succubus in his form, doing the dirty deeds.)

Even if there were, they would be useless because casters can create illusions of anything so a recorder evil/immoral deed would be suspected to be fake.

That's a good suggestion, but I'm not sure if I want to use an optimized succubus. I was going to use a stock version, but at the same time use it's full potential and make the life of the PC a living nightmare without even confronting him personally.

I'm just jealous that Deadmanwalking beat me to the 'start a cult' thing. :)
That was one of my go-to tactics back in Vampire the Masquerade.
The joy of being a vampire. Frat boys will drink anything.
My own time playing VtM (including in LARP) may have something to with having suggested it...
Though so might having learned a really disturbing amount about cults as a Psych Major, I suppose.
Any more, uhhh... in-dept ideas? ;) Things that a succubus could (or would have to) do personally, for example when the target isn't just a weak commoner, so her minions aren't enough to do the job?
Like what? I mean, DC 23 Dominate Person is a pretty awesome trump card vs. most people of 6th level or less...which is a lot more people than 1st level Commoners. Her powers of mind control manipulation are definitely her strong suit. That being the case, more specifics are likely needed before plans can be made.
I suppose she might work to discredit them in various ways until something stuck, or hire powerful people to take them out from behind a shell of contacts.
If all else fails, she can Summon a Babau to assassinate them, trying once a day until it works. I mean, with +22 Stealth and a personal CR of 6, it's a fabulous assassin, and it lasts for long enough to carry one out, too.

Don't make her scope quite so narrow. Her mission could be/should be to also sow as much Chaos as possible. A seductive and intelligent woman can bring down entire kingdoms, ruining the just and lawful rule of one monarch and putting another in his place, perhaps one more amiable to certain cults operating in secret within his kingdom - and that's without spell-like abilities. Serving to distract a Paladin (or any character, really) from fulfilling his great destiny could have repercussions throughout time - and nothing says that the succubus in question (or the one directing her) doesn't have access to powerful divination and augury type spells that would guide her efforts to greater effect.
Its not about getting someone to cheat on their wives or breaking their vow of chastity... its about creating hell on earth. Or rather, Abyss on Earth as the case may be.

IF she can get access to drugs, and other vice-y things, addicting as many people as possible, so that they turn to various other crimes, to support their habits, could also be a way to drag a community down morally.
If she's got time to kill, introducing new customs that are cruel (encouraging the mocking of losers of competitions, or forcing them to wear a 'garland of shame' or something, and the near-worship of winners of games, to create arrogance and entitlement in the winners, and shame and resentment in the losers).
There's also the old tactics of setting up and reinforcing class divisions, and highlighting inequality and unfairness, to breed yet more resentment (on one end) and entitlement (on the other end), leading to the 'winners' of the social line-drawing feeling that the hoi-polloi are both dirty lazy and deserving of their low status, and also an imminent threat to their own station 'cause 'they're jealous,' and encouraging the upper class to party and engage in various acts of both extravagance and decadance (hey, a use for those drugs, and all that people-sleeping-around shenanigans!), giving the lower class the impression that the upper class are all a bunch of immoral degenerates, worthy of contempt. Stir for thirty years until it comes to a boil, and sit back and watch the fun. (Don't forget to leave plans for 'how to build your own guillotine' lying around for the filthy stinking peasants to find...)
If she's not picky (and, really, she's a shapeshifting sex-demon made from equal parts [chaos] and [evil], so she's probably got more flexible standards than most, she could get her freak on with some local critters, to create half-fiendish and / or fiendish wolves, bears, alligators, etc. in the region (most of which will take a year or three to mature, so this will take some time to 'ripen'), which she can have attack outlying farms (she can use charm monster on her demon-wolves to precisely target them, but doesn't really have to keep control of them 24/7, since half-fiendish and fiendish wolves will probably be prone to attack outlying farms on their own volition...). Her cult can offer succor via secret 'magical wards' (and she can charm the demon-wolves to avoid the farms of those who agree to join her cult), and she can influence the local laws and authorities to encourage crueler punishments and harsher taxes, as the community is 'under seige' and 'on wartime footing!' and 'must make sacrifices to defend ourselves.' Get the locals clamoring to give up their rights, accept curfews (to protect them from the terrible monsters in the night, which the succubus has totally manufactured). Wolves are my go-to animal here, but if the local area has a werebear precense, for instance, making some half-fiendish or fiendish bears, and setting them on the outlying farms, can create an anti-bear hysteria and lead to bounties on bear parts and propoganda campaigns against the local werebears, etc. so this can be tailored so that the biggest local threat to the succubus can be made to appear to the source of the attacks on the community, forcing them out, and keeping them from ever being able to move against her (since she's 'poisoned the well' and the entire community will now fight to keep them away from the community, and therefore, from her, the *real* source of all their problems.
Once the 'kill alla X' mindset has had some years to take hold, she should be able to get rid of her wolves (or whatever) and refocus the hate (and the bounties, and the laws) against local goblin tribes, or local Varisian ne'er-do-wells, slippery-sloping her way into turning the community against itself, as families of one ethnicity end up despising families of another ethnicity. The more long-standing feuds (based on class, race, faith, gender, ethnicity, etc.) she can get going on in the community, the more people are gripped with schemes and plots of revenge, the more chaotic and evil the community becomes, and the less likely that any charismatic do-gooder will be able to ride in and rally any significant resistance movement and 'set things right,' because the people themselves will be so invested in the fractious status quo that they will actively resist attempts to make things better.
The draconian martial laws she has engineered to be passed by panicky local authorities (and, at the time, whole-heartedly approved by terrified townsfolk) will be oppressive and, particularly with her tainting of the reputations of authority figures, seem capricious (promoting a disrespect for law, and serving the ends of chaos), and people will travel in crudely-armed packs (since the best weapons will be reserved to the town guard only, keeping the people scared, as they feel that they have been robbed of the ability to really protect themselves), ever fearful of both monster attacks (mostly outside the walls) and whoever they are feuding with (inside the community), leading to mob violence on a semi-regular basis.

Another route to power with the nobles, is the 'patron of the arts'.
All it takes it a noble (low to mid level) she seduces/charms/impersonates and starts promoting artists of, um, unique talents. This can lead to two levels of corruption.
1) Nobility. Through art shows, operas etc, she can influcence the nobles to new acts. An opera where the 'hero' cruely tortures the bad guy to get the info to save the princess, followed up by subtle suggestions to some of the more influential guests that 'putting someone on the rack was so neat to watch, I'd love to do that'. A play where the noble takes advantage of the bride on the night before the wedding 'as his right'. Again with suggestion. Heck, suggest to the noble he should enjoy his peseants, then charm the peseant to go along with him...
2) Commoners. Using the same methods, you can stir up feelings of resentment among the commoners. A suggestion that lady such and such needs to be 'taken down' a notch to her stableboy will start. Bonus if you dominate lady such and such so she seems willing. Maybe modify memory later so she thinks she did want it.
3) A 'black widow society'. A cult where noble women 'debase' themselves sleeping with commoners, culminating in killing immdietalty after (or during) coitus. A mix of 'using one's power' and celebrating a woman's role as bringer (and taker) of life.
Just some ideas.

Another thing to note is psychological manipulation: between detect thoughts, Bluff checks, and (probably) a high Sense Motive skill, a succubus can really learn what pushes someone's buttons, and then push them, without much in the way of magic.
A young succubus is a chaotic evil sex machine that drains people dry and converts their corpses into wights until the land is a waste and undead are everywhere.
An old succubus is much, much, much more frightening. (If they've learned self-control. Inherently chaotic creatures often don't.) Wait, manipulate, enjoy watching your pawns run around, occasionally indulge yourself (incidentally creating a bunch of half-fiend children, not necessarily human, to spread more chaos), set best friends against each other, blacken the reputation of heroes by changing into their shape and getting caught doing plausible-for-them evil deeds...
She could even be the patron of up-and-coming adventurers, directing them against threats to her control (the "abusive priest", the "corrupt local judge", the "mad hermit").
Oh, and be a fat crabby middle-aged lady. No one ever suspects them.
| Richard Leonhart |
the cult has the problem that it turns people evil, but not chaotic, quite to the contrary.
I would believe that corruption as evil alone is enough, and a very extensive example is Lilith in the Sin war trilogy (Diablo canon). She manipulates 2 cults into fighting each other, one cult started evil, the other good.
If it has to be chaotic evil, then the playing a social circle against each other works best. Dominate some, impersonate another, mistrust and a potential for violence is key.
This grand scheme things don't mean that she doesn't from time to time has a very small plan to corrupt an easy target, or perhaps some find it more interesting to go quality of quantity and very subtly manipulate a high lvl paladin or public figure. (think of Joker vs. Harvey Dent)
If you want to go for the crown, have her take over a paladin order where they don't notice that suddenly their spells are granted by demons, and they slowly turn into Blackguards. (needs a lot of house ruling)
Anyhow, as their exterior clearly shows, Succubi are there to have fun.

First, look at the Succubus. HER STATS, BOTHER IT ALL, NOT THE MINI!
Ahem. Second, look at what's listed under "spell-like abilities".
Specifically, Suggestion.
Why not "suggest" (in one form) to someone(s) that they may really want to be in a certain place at a certain time (but hidden) with a second suggestion that they wait to act on any enraging event, and then make a show for them (in another form) in a "safe" place that just happens to have lots of peepholes. Suddenly, there is no need for recording equipment: people've seen it themselves. And then they'll go home and stew about it.
I was going to mention that I was surprised no one had mentioned "suggestion" before me, but then Matthew Morris had to go and ruin my fun! I blame him! The nice lady told me so!
(Also, he mentioned Modify Memory which succubi don't actually have, but if you go by Ashiel's suggestion of using their wealth, they can easily have a modify memory item crafted for just such purposes.)
Also other useful spells for a succubus, if you go this route:
* Glibness
* Honeyed Tongue
* Eagle's Splendor (no seriously, this is a terrible thing, but then again...)
Also, between her ethereal jaunt and teleport, she can pretty handily evade most any "trap" situation. Bonus points if she sets up a would-be assassination, leads the assassins to where the real target is (in disguise) and then teleports out.
Of course then there's her profane gift. Get a noble feeling all "inspired" [+2 to CHA!] by her (or "his", if she takes that form) "endless love" (or other such drivel, mortals really eat this stuff up), and then when they've gotten themselves into some real trouble, BAM!, there goes the CHA drain! This is even more powerful in the hands of, say, a bard, oracle, or sorcerer they've managed to "acquire". And heck, slowly spreading the profane gifts around willy nilly (and modifying memory (if they take that route) later so no one remembers where or how they became so "inspired" (+2 to any score except CHA) means that she gets free suggestions on them regardless of distance. And simply wait until they're asleep to plant suggestions into their dreams. Enter the swift corruption and mass hysteria of entire countries.
And Set, were you talking about Galt? 'Cause it seemed an awful lot like you were talking about Galt.

Something else with the charisma drain.
IF she uses hte gift on low Cha mooks (like CHA of 7 or so) it can make interrogating them, um difficult.
*Party goes to interrogate mook.*
"Tell us where your boss is!"
Meanwhile back at the base...
"Boss! The adventurers captured Lawrence! He'll spill the whole game!"
*succubus revokes her gift, likely dropping Lawrence to 0 Cha.* "No, no he won't."

Why blackmail? What does she get out of it? You don't want to manipulate people you want to damn them.
Social standing? Pah, who cares? That's just mortal stuff. What you are after is corruption pure and simple.
A succubus wants to take the most chaste and noble of people and bend them through use of suggestion and her own natural charisma into wilfully accepting their own damnation. A true succubus takes delight in turning good people into monsters. She will use her power to get people to give up every moral that they have.
Really what would a succubus do? Stuff that I really don't want to post on a message board. If you feel comfortable posting it here then what you are suggesting is far too tame.

Keep in mind that every succubus is also an incubus. They aren’t truly male or female--they’re unnatural lust given form.
Have the creature sow its demonic oats far and wide, defiling innocents and at the same time sowing conflict by disguising itself as a foreign soldier, clergy, a racial minority--anything that will make preexisting antipathies flare into violence.
Have it send a babau to dispose of any minor threats to its security. Consider having it replace one of the babau's victims.

IMHO, I think the key is to determine how the succubus' MO is and what she wants long term.
Kind of rambling, so...
In that way, demons are artists of misery Just like serial killers have 'signatures' so do demons. To steal an idea from Sparticus, a succubi might play the long game of giving her boon to a gladiator, making him the kind of figher "Men want to be, women want to be with." (Think Crassius from the TV show). That (logically) a man with the Profane Gift would be more likely to sire tieflings (leaving no doubt to the woman's husband that he'd been cuckhold). The resulting murders and chaos would be her reward. Likewise a different succubus might choose targets that are left handed, a third might encourage debased acts on people the mark is responsible for, etc. Heck, you could actually have succubus A betray succubus B because her methods are 'encroaching'. It's also a bit of celestial vanity. The succubus is immortal. It would enjoy if the mortals came to know of Kathay, temptress of lefthanded weavers, but it doesn't worry about mortals knowing. If it kills one every 10 years, sending his soul to the abyss, the mortals might not notice. But celestials, with their longer view as well may well see the patern.

Just remember that a demon who's staying longterm on the prime material has to avoid those pesky paladins, clerics, and other detecting casters. While there are magical means to do so, they all have potential downfalls
As to what the succubus should do personally? Recruit adventurers of her own! She should not be personally involved unless she's dammed sure that it's to her advantage to reveal her presence. Who she doesn't bind with personal loyalty, she'll snag with blackmail. She'll be developing contacts subtley with her main goal of building her own network of everything from elite assistants to street level informers.
This will vary tremendously depending on the level of the campaign you're running. What might be good enough subterfuge for a 5th level party will utterly fail at 15.
BTW if by "personally" you're looking for X-Rated or squick answers, there are better venues for your inquiry.

Hmm another thought on the serial killer/cult concept.
Picture a succubus who has an MO of corrupting redheads. She works on two levels, killing redheads, and a cult of women who aren't redheads, but kill in the succubus' name (she tells them they're part of a bachanae cult, as an example. Her suggestions to kill are 'divine guidance', dominated victims seem to enjoy it.
Now the party is called because of a string of dead redheads, torn apart, some with looks of bliss. Right when they think they have the MO, a dead brunette turns up. Why?
The brunette brought Christina Hendricks as a sacrifice. The succubus realized she wasn't a true redhead (casts detect ginger?) and punished the cultist. Now the party gets to wonder if it is a copycat killer, or the killer branching out, or will they find the truth?

Why blackmail? What does she get out of it? You don't want to manipulate people you want to damn them.
You blackmail them into performing acts that will damn them. The excuse 'But I'm not evil, Ms. Pharasma, I just set the neighbors house on fire and killed all those people to save my reputation!' isn't gonna keep them out of the Abyss at the end.
Social standing? Pah, who cares? That's just mortal stuff. What you are after is corruption pure and simple.
By creating a class war (race war, culture was, whatever) that tears the community apart, filling everyone with hate for their own neighbors, and ends with a torch-and-pitchfork riot in which hundreds are dragged to their death, you guarantee that none of them folk are going to be singing with the angels on Mt. Celestia.
Running around dominating people into doing unspeakable stuff with farm animals is just inviting the Paladins to come and see what's in the water.

I don't see much of an issue with demon types 'conforming' to stereotypes (succubi/inccubi) I do feel that within those types there are fair game.
Like an incubus who uses female forms to seduce men, then reveals its true form for the 'crying game' shock. To some men, that's going to really frak them up emotionally. Then a bit of bluff, intimidate and magical coersion... voila, crazed maniac!

Re: Blackmail
Star Wars aside, one evil act doesn't make you evil.* So you catch the Paladin's wife stepping out on her husband. She's not suddenly evil, or chaotic, she won't ping on his 'evilmeter'. She is however human and prone to guilt. So you use that information to dig a little deeper. "I won't tell your husband you cheated on him if you just tell me where his order sent his fellow Paladin. It won't even hurt him if you tell me."
Then it becomes, "That Paladin you betrayed died horribly. But no one except you and me knows that secret. Now where did you say the high priest was?"
Then it becomes, "Thank you my child, thanks to you I've been able to slaughter the high priest and put a doppleganger in his place. See what we can do together? Now I need you to 'distract' your husband..."
Farther and farther down the scale. I'm sure there are succubi who pride themselves on not resorting to SLAs.

Personally I don't care for having both since the distinction is too narrow. Both are created from the sins of lustful and rapacious mortals, but succubi are more focused on the lustful and incubi are more focused on the rapacious? Incubi should've been something more bestial and destructive---NOT a charming BDSM version of the succubus. With succubi able to conform to any gender it is pointless to have a male variant.
To that end, if you were really eager to pull a "Crying Game" on your players, the succubus could simply take the form of a male humanoid and claim to have been using a glamor. Personally I avoid those types of twists because I feel like there are unfortunate implications in goading your players into a gay panic scenario, but a succubus can still fulfill the role as well as an incubus.

I love Allevrah Azrinae. She's one of my favorite villains. She's so ridiculous and evil that it doesn't even make sense. The best part is knowing about more Golarion lore and realizing that she was totally cool with killing everything in the Inner Sea, transforming hundreds of thousands of years of culture into ash-blasted ruins, toppling an entire continent into the Darklands and killing the entire Drow and elf civilization... because she was entirely sure that the elves could just hop planet and come back after it was all done. She was going to have the people she liked move off-world, end the world and then come back. She was doing it that way and was nonchalant about it because it had actually, literally been done before. So absurd.

Teleport and disguise to sow confusion and mistrust.
An informant tells the captain of the guard that someone is smuggling church relics out of the city. Then, the 'captain of the guard' convinces a group of individuals that the relic is in danger and needs to be secretly transported out of the city.
Drain their victims (of the Energy Drain) of their blood as well, along with the tell-tale bite marks of a vampire to push suspicion in a different direction.

Also, I am contractually obligated to point out that there is an Ecology of the Succubus article in Kobold Quarterly #21. Might be worth looting for ideas.
I'm too poor and cheap to buy it.

Set scares me sometimes. But in a good way....I think.

Thanks!
I wrote up some special powers for succubi who *really* want to mess with people, allowing them to sleep with a man, steal their DNA, and then use a corrupted version of it to knock up other people. Not only do a half-dozen women become pregnant and remember being seduced by the local saintly priest or paladin or kindly mayor or whatever causes the most scandal, they end up giving birth to children that look like 'the father,' but develop half-fiend traits when they hit puberty.
To go with the horror movie trope, the mother may also be subjected to a variation on charm that makes her fanatically protective of her demonspawn child, before it reveals its true colors (and perhaps even afterwards!).
Ideally, a variant half-fiend template for the children of succubi, that replaces other spell-like abilities with charm person and alter self, would probably be even better, to go straight for the 'Village of the Damned' vibe.
That's all stuff that a succubus out of the box couldn't do 'though, and would require some optional abilities or succubus/hag/lamia-specific 'monster feats' or something.
