Cranking up the Wendigo Encounter

Rise of the Runelords

My party consists of 6 reasonably optimized PCs and I suspect the lone Wendigo will not offer much of a challenge to them once they are able to confront him (action economy...).

What would be some nice, thematically fitting mooks that he could be surrounded with? About CR 9-12 would be best I think.

Greetings, fellow travellers.

I just remember the encounter dimly, sorry if the suggestion does not fit the circumstances.
Hm.
I would go for Gnoph-keh from PFSRD, AP #46 a CR 12 monster or a couple of Frost Giants from PFSRD.

Ruyan.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I suggest the Yuki-Onna from Bestiary 3. Though of a slightly asian feel, its easy to change the name of the monster to incorporate it into the environment of the Kodars and Xin Shalast.
Basically, they're CR 8 undead spirits who have frozen to death in the snow and weren't given a proper burial. Perhaps the ghosts of those the Wendigo killed but didn't turn into another of its kind? Thematically, they fit pretty well, especially since there's so few other living things up there in the Kodars (that being the reason for the whole "death by starvation" thing).

Thanks fo your suggestions! I will probably use the Yuki-Onna.

Dark Archive

be sure to use the pfsrd version of the wendigo not the D&D3.5 version as printed.

Spoiler:
the DC 28 will saves are pretty tough for most characters, it was for my party of 5 min-maxers. Also, the improved grab + rend combo is pretty fearsome on its own.

I don't think it needs mooks - although the Yuki-Onna adds a lot of flavor...great suggestion!
