Hello everyone,
First off let me say thank you for any help I receive in advance. As the title states, I need some help making an Oracle character for an upcoming game, I am new to PF and have not played many RPGs like this before so I apologize if my concept or questions are completely noobish.
My character concept is basically to play an Oracle who has mistaken his "gifts" as signs that he was once a god of the realm that somehow was stripped of his power and stuck in a human body.(low wisdom?) He hopes to return to his former glory and find out who did this to him. (not sure if this would even be allowed as Oracles receive their powers from deities and I doubt parading as one would be ok with most deities.) If my idea would be acceptable, (haven't spoken to the GM about it yet, want to present my entire concept before I spam him with questions), my main plan idea is to be very CHA based and use diplomacy to accomplish crazy feats, such as convincing village folk by acts of healing the sick and such, that I am in-fact a god. This character would truly believe he was a god and would care for his children wholeheartedly. His acts would not be to try and trick people into believing anything, he would let his god-like powers speak for themselves. What do you guys think? If this is completely stupid and cheesy feel free to say so and possibly offer a less cheesy concept.
What I need help with mainly is fleshing this character out. We are using a 25 point buy, I will be starting at 4th lvl (joining a campaign that lost several members and I offered to jump in.)I am thinking of playing a buffer type, with some ability to heal (obviously since the cure spells are free). I have no idea what mystery to go with, I am pretty set on the clouded vision curse (fluff reasons, I know it's a rough one to deal with). Also, I have no idea what feats to take, or skills for that matter haha.
Currently our party is a summoner, inquisitor, fighter, a rogue and I believe an alchemist (another one joining the group). Also, the campaign is Serpents Skull or whatever, the party just got off the island. (that's all I know)
Thanks again for any help you offer!

First question, if you want help with choices of feats/options what materials are you allowed to use? Obviously if you are using an oracle you can use the APG but what about Ultimate magic or Ultimate Combat? What about 3rd party material or Campaign Setting Paizo books? Since you are new to the group and to the game, check with the dm, each has their own line in the sand for these sorts of things, and you dont want to spend alot of time creating a character you cant use.

personally i enjoy oracle of life. there are much better oracles to go if you want to do something other than specialize in healing.
I think life may help your concept because one of the powers is called energy body, where you turn into energy and heal people by moving through their square. 1/round when you or someone moves through your square, you can heal them 1d8+oracle level
but i've looked at the oracle of life a lot, so i'm a bit more prone to think about them

First off, i can use APG, UM, UC,Serpent's Skull and of course Core, so feel free to go nuts!
I was thinking of an Oracle of Life who hates undead as he sees life and death as a balance and should not be tampered with (unless he sees it as necessary, deity ego alert). Basically this concept started with me watching too much Stargate SG-1. The Priors of the Ori is kind of how I envision my character, without the pale skin and me technically spreading my own gospel.
Or
with fear of offending anyone (apologies if I do, it is not intended), I could play a "Jesus-ish" guy who interprets his presence on the mortal plane as an act done to himself as to properly guide his followers to salvation. (Just throwing out other ideas here)
As for the question pertaining to what kind of god my character would think he was would really depend on what mystery he takes. ( I would even not be opposed to taking the Archetype where I get two curses (possibly lame as my next one) because all those re-rolls would be freaking awesome haha and would allow for some in character taunting to the GM. "You think you could crit a god?! Re-roll please" :)
My main issue is finding a build that is going to fit my concept while still contributing a needed role within the party (whatever that may be)
Thanks for the help so far!
*edit* I also thought of using energy body to show my "true form". it would give more validation to my claims of being a god. Im sure the people have seen a cleric heal, but have they ever seen anyone turn into a glowing angel of healing awesomeness? I think not haha

My suggestion would be either an Oracle of Battle is you are going for a warlike deity. Or an Oracle of life is you want to go the benevolent deity.
An Oracle of Battle would allow you to pose as a fighter who is an incarnation of the deity of war. From a role-playing stand point this may be easier and at the same time a lot of fun. Start out claiming to be a simple warrior but when you are in a crisis situations your divinity manifests. Pick mostly buff spells and you may even get some people believing you. This way you can "Discover" your past during the game.
If you are going the Oracle of life then your delusions are probably already manifesting before the game. Probably go the messiah angle. Play up the whole benevolent preacher aspect and really annoy the rest of the party.
Personally I think the Oracle of Battle would be a blast.

My question with the viability of this is how aware of magic are the people in the setting...I'm not familiar with serpent skull...In a low magic world were the common people don't understand much about magic this seems like it could work...in your standard pathfinder campaign it seems like a hard sell to think that people would think you are a god for functionally doing what clerics they are inundated with every day already do(not trying to be a buzz kill but if I was DMing this you would probably making diplomacy at high DC's to fool people and there would be a great risk anytime you were around knowledgeable people especially clerics that they would react badly)...assuming your DM is down with working with you to let this happen I have another question...what happens If some one can disprove his belief(delusional people which sounds like what your describing react exceedingly badly to things that don't fit into there delusion or people questioning them)...can he be convinced he's not a god if a knowledgeable person explains the concepts of oracles to him...
Your undead hating idea sounds a lot like a worshiper of Phrasma will your character think he is an incarnation of Phrasma or just a similar being...
I think you should look at the Heavens Mystery (Lure of heavens ltes you walk on water...Awesome display can help prove your divinity and impress people...a lot of the other ones are related to stars and night so the can be used to impress and are unusual)Life has some good options like discussed above...You could do one of the nature based ones to show control over the natural world which could show another type of divinity...
As far as curses I would avoid tongues and wasting if you want followers...Haunted and lame seem to work the best especially haunted because it gives some credence to the fact that you are more then you appear if people see it manifesting...Clouded vision makes a lot of sense to but the penalties are steep(could be fun to role play though)
The Seer Arch type could also be good if you want to try to use a lot of divination to show your all knowing(prophetic vision from ultimate magic could help with this)
Feats:
Leadership seems almost a preq if your Dm allows it take advantage of high charisma and let your converts work for you...extra revelations might be worth it depending on which mystery you pick...Skill focus diplomacy could be a nice touch given your chars reliance on that skill...Other then that the rest of feats seems to come down to play style.
Skills
heal-heal the sick anyone
sense motive-seem wiser then you are like you can red people
diplomacy-obvious
intimidate-if some times your benevolent mood darkens
knowledge religion- your faith and others
Use Magic Device gives you access to wider and in many case flashier or more impressive spells like those from druid and arcane lists
A few options hope that helps.

Hmmm both of you guys are giving me great ideas and now I'm torn. I was almost completely set on an Oracle of life but that battle or even nature sound pretty awesome. If you were to make these guys, how would you go about it? feats, stats, revelations etc. (thank you Chaos_Scion, that is the kind of stuff I'm looking for)
I too lack knowledge about the consistency of magic in Serpent's Skull. I figure if people don't convert initially it would give me more opportunity to RP and gives more of a challenge.
The best thing about this is how he will interact with the rest of the party. The "face" is a gnome summoner who is completely bent on becoming a powerful noble. My main angle with him will be to explain how aiding a god will reap him all kinds of rewards once I return to my true state, etc
The other characters have been somewhat flat so far so it will be interesting if/how they develop in the presence of a deity.
Anyways, thanks for the suggestions so far, they are really helping

I would personally like playing the battle oracle but from what your describing it seems a little wrong...It seems to much like chars people will encounter(they play very like battle clerics, paladins, and a lot of other oracles)...to make people think you are a god I would focus on using unique abilities people would be less likely to see that our outwardly impressive...
Stat wise really depends on the build if your going straight caster(nature or life) obviously max Charisma as high as you can(actually do this regardless because your spell casting and all your main skills and leadership if you take it would focus on it)...a lot of your abilities and role playing could benefit from a good wisdom(heal, sense motive, being an all knowing and wise figure)...Intelligence can be low to average all it does for you is set the level you want to role play at(this char doesn't have to be real smart if he is wise)...Strength enough to wear your armor and a bit more if you plan to be in melee...dex doesn't really matter for your char...Con should probably be your highest after charisma...
If you go battle ignore most of that advice...charisma is still king as is a strong con...strength needs to be high for damage and to hit especially if you go two handed although i would probably go sword and board unless you have a really high strength and use buffs as protection
Another consideration is other then the summoner what is your party set up...A life oracle can take the role of a cleric(steal ones thunder especially if you take the channel energy)...Battle cleric can help in a melee weak party...I wouldn't play a nature based one if you had a druid in the party...If none of those roles in necessary than play what ever you want
DCSJ30
Awesome, you are really thinking the way I was about my character (I just didn't know how to convert my idea onto a character sheet haha).
The party is comprised of a summoner, a rogue, an inquisitor (who might be multi-classing as gun slinger) a fighter and either a true primitive Barbarian or an alchemist (not sure what he wants to do...probably the Barbarian or some other up front melee guy)
I agree about the battle Oracle, just seems overplayed at this point. I really want to bring a fresh style to my character and use my powers in creative ways. Yes leadership will be a huge part of my character and the GM approved it. I will be entering the campaign at lvl 5.
My main dilemma at this point is what mystery I should take. Life seems like it would be fun, but from what I've seen in other posts is healing sucks in combat and I'm going to need to be able to contribute during battle (what to do?!)
Also, i mentioned the dual-cursed archetype (clouded vision and lame) to my gm and he actually loved the idea of breaking the 4th wall slightly and my character having "godly power" over dice rolls, so that too is an option. I am completely content with having challenges (clouded vision) over my character as it keeps my character from becoming cheesy and also it adds for some fun roleplaying. Thanks for the advice, lets keep the ball rolling! :)

Oracle of the Heavens seems very good for a god-wannabe. You get to float, hover, and eventually fly (a god doesn't walk like puny mortals); you can dazzle people with illusions; and eventually, you can kill people by striking the true fear of YOU into their hearts. (You get Phantasmal Killer as a mystery.)
thenovalord
I love Oracles
my 2 main characters (AP and PFS) at the mo are all Oracles
for your concept as Foxy says it must be heavens
you have these god like powers, so you must be of that origin
Heavens targets all 3 saves quite nicely
Many oracle powers are (SU) so no issues with AOO, Conc, being grappled etc
if they just had 2 good saves instead of one.....
Chaos_Scion
i second the idea that heavens works for flavor(even if you take life I would ask the DM to let me take the one that lets you float because its awsome for flavor but not a huge in game ability)...I am less convinced though looking at your party that life might not be the wiser choice...you have no healers and I do not agree that combat healing sucks(it is a necessity in my regular campaigns-if you don't have channel you die a lot)... taking life along with the channel revelation and selective channeling will make your party love you even if it doesn't make your followers lover you more...the big problem with in combat healing is it can be boring as a cleric/oracle but if you fight tough combats consistently I wouldn't want to go without(especially if I'm the tank or melee DPS)...
What to do in combat and a lot of your divinity flavor can come from UMD with your charisma you will be able to use any classes scrolls, and wands.(through a fireball, control unbelievers, or turn into a beast and so many more) The only limitation on your awesomeness is your creativity and a little bit of gpa.
Got to love some one willing to role play hard and take tons of penalties with the curses
Revelations(if you take life)
1. Channel-channel positive energy of the gods and everyone is happy
2. Life link-take on the wounds of your followers ad bear their suffering
3.Energy body-not the most useful in my opinion but lots of flavor potential
4. most of the other abilities in some way just make you better at healing the injured and curing the sick so that works out...
DCSJ30
Hmm...Oracle of heavens, I keep seeing people post about how awesome it is, but i don't see how. I would probably blame this on my noobness haha. Would you mind showing me an example of how awesome heavens is?
The thing with life is as Chaos said, my party needs a healer. With that said however, as an Oracle i get all the cure spells for free. Only issue with that is no channeling, but would all the cure spells be enough?
Not sure which way to go, would anyone be opposed to building a lvl 5 oracle of heavens and/or a lvl 5 oracle of life so I can see the 2 back to back and decide?
Thanks again for all the help/advice. I'm really glad I joined the forums, you all have been a major help!
Chaos_Scion
I look into building the two options but to your other question no cures are not in my opinion enough...they can work if you are only healing lets say one or two warrior classes defending a choke point but in my experience a lot of people tend to be taking damage at any one time...problem 2 you have to be in touch range(with the new murderous rules surrounding casting defensively this is exceedingly dangerous even with combat casting)...Channel gets 30 feet radius and does not provoke an attack of opportunity(so you can get to guys in the thick of battle and do so safety with an AOE that can help everyone in the party...Channel also has really solid options like quicken channel that can let you double up your channels twice per round add in the head band of positive channeling or what ever its called and that's enough with good rolls to bring anyone back from the brink(it can also make a very useful attack option against massed undead)
This assumes combat heavy and intense battle if that's not your Gm's style and you only need after action healing then your fine.
DCSJ30
Ok, thanks for letting me know. The GM is pretty balanced from what I can tell but the campaign so far has been very combat based simply because most of the other players have not fully committed to their characters to begin role playing. (a lot of us are pretty new so they might be embarrassed to role play but once I start, hopefully that loosens them up haha).
Channel does seem like a pretty awesome power in it's own right, and it's pretty much that one revelation that is keeping me focused on an Oracle of life.
I was even looking at a paladin/Oracle of battle...not sure if it would be worth playing, but after Oracle of Battle was suggested I began looking into how I could flavor it up and be somewhat useful in battle. Would it be worth it to multiclass or should I go straight Oracle?

Lure of heavens right now your hovering above the ground eventually your flying
Awesome display-makes great use of color spray and other pattern based illusions(check out the bonus spells/not sure if this would work with UMD but it should)-flavor
Interstellar void-this one was a toss up but 5d6 cold damage that gets better with lvls isn't bad.
Feats
Skill focus diplomacy
I was a little less sure on these it depends on play style
if you want to go with awesome display and focus on illusions spell focus illusion and spell penetration could help...you will be doing more casting and less healing but what you will be doing is close in so combat casting might be a good choice.
Expanded arcane to give you more spell casting options
There really aren't any must takes
Skills
diplomacy-16
heal-10
sense motive-10
UMD-14
Fly-7
Perception-10
Better class skill give you fly and perception
In sum not a great healer but you can do in a pinch...lots of good flavor...more active role as a spell caster and using your revelations to befuddle and do damage...

What you need to make this concept work is to find a good dead deity for your character to be. I would suggest Aroden as no one really knows what happened to him. The fact is that you are able to cast divine spells so just saying you are a nut case will not work. Even other divine casters will not be able to prove outright you are not in fact Aroden reborn.
If your GM lets you play a pure blood Azlati, if not just play a normal Azlati.
