How to hide something from the gods

Advice

hi everyone,

i was making a campaign in which a god hide some information from other gods in the material plane and leaves the legacy of protecting that info to some mortals, which in turn form a secret world-wide organization. so, i was wondering, is that even posible?. i mean, how spread is the all-knowing power of the gods...?

The Exchange

The exact extent of divine perceptions is left largely up to the discretion of you, the GM. In the days before PF, WotC's Deities & Demigods spelled out the range of divine perception, and if I remember their guidelines correctly, a god was automatically aware of events happening within a few miles of their physical location, but events further off and on other planes could only be perceived through the senses of their clergy, who could be used as a kind of 'remote camera'. Also, possibly, hallowed areas - and anybody who spoke the god's name could be briefly spied upon. So decide what your gods can perceive and then build your adventure to account for a way around it.

Also the mindblank spell.

thank u both, that was very helpful. actualy, linconl, your description fits pretty well with what i was thinking about, but i guess that, also, every god has, or at least should have, unlmited, or otherwise very extended, knoledge of things minding his domains, as, for example, pharasma, Goddess of fate, death, prophecy, and birth, has complete knowledge of everyone´s fate from birth to death. so, i dont know, what do u think?

The Exchange

That's a reasonable ruling. For your purposes, Pharasma would have to be either in on the secret, or purposely pretending not to know it... unless she deliberately wiped out her own memory of the secret.

Magic. There are plenty of powerful individuals who can hide things from gods. Vecna revels in secrets. This means that there are secrets even the gods can not access, otherwise being a god of secrecy would be kind of pointless. Gods are like mortals- They are limited to their senses. For the most part, their senses grant omniscience on their own home plane, and also information based on their portfolio. The wording in murky, for what exactly constitutes "welfare" for racial gods? Is an orc stubbing his toe a matter Gruumsh learns of? Does Lolth know when mindflayers develop a new weapon they may use against drow? I imagine they know what they know due to the prayers from their followers, which give a sort of "scrying" effect on their general condition. The worshipers open their memories to their god.

In this way, gods would know far more than mortals, and secrets would be far harder to keep. They would, however, be possible to keep. Gods consider things irrelevant. Hiding something in the irrelevant may make a god simply never notice.

And of course, mortal magic could even be brought to those extents. If so, they would require great time, effort and expense. Also, the fact that gods could not observe inside would probably be fairly obvious, possibly provoking gods to send avatars or cultists to check up on it.

well, actualy, its not really hiden, and its an object... several, in fact. they are like the philactery/pieces of another god... and are like hide in plain sight... so that´s why its knoledge what im concerned about... so, in this oraganization, there couldn´t be anyone who workships any god, becouse that would meke that god finding out, right?

there is also another thing i was thinking about... since the campaing its goning to be VERY god-focused (obviously), where would a god start to meddle with the affairs of PCs... (i was planing on having the gods awarding or punishing the PCs for their actions, subtly at first, and more as they grew in importance)

Norgorber and Sivanah both cover domains of keeping things secret from what I understand..or at least knowing more than others. If the other gods had knowledge of all things a lot of what they are would have no purpose. Who knows, one of them (or a cohort) may even be influencing them to be hidden.Im sure keeping something from a another deity is a great accomplishment

well, the plot goes like this:

"... there was a time when the gods saw that source of power threatened. Not because humans stopped believing in them or because they cease to worship them. There was, in that time, a god called (.....) that formed a particular strong bond with mortals. at first he was also worshiped and grew in power, in fact, more than most. But then he began to understand another truth, the true power that lies in every creature. And, instead of feeding from this power, he began to nourish it. Instead of taking, began to give. And, somehow, this made him more powerful. understood then that every being has a function and that beings that he believes somehow inferior, had capabilities that they did not have. Was then when he wanted to share what they had learned, but the world was not ready for that. The other gods, at least for the most part, took this as a threat. Then, a great battle between gods unleashed and this knowledge was buried for several ages. All mortals who knew this truth were persecuted and eliminated and with them all evidence of their existence. While the problem for the gods had come to an end (or so they sougth), there was a goddess, (.....) that became intrigued by the designs of (....). decided then help him scape, and hide in the material plane of Golarion, long before the gods take interest in it. And, for his power to lay unnoticed, he divided himself in several pieces, which were scattered across the world. When Aboleth led the Azlanti to glory, he passed on to one of them, a son he had with a Azlanti, (.....), the knowledge and responsibility to keep it hidden. So, the (......) was formed. Its aim was to prevent the slaughter from happening again..."

Though i like the idea, it seems rather complicated, but i dont know, i´d like to see it trough. Advice much appreciated. thanks.
