Attacks of opportunity

Rules Questions

I have for awhile now been playing in my game the rule that attacks of opportunity stop movement of of the creature that got hit or stops the grapple or whatever was attempted. Though I just added a new played to my game that had never heard that before despite being a 3.5 player before as well.

So what I want to know is do attacks of opportunity stop movement or other actions that provoked them or not? In 3.5 I could swear they did though I am not sure.

Not normally, no.

I have scoured the Pathfinder core book and 3.5 and I can't find that rule anywhere. So have I been doing this wrong or am I just missing something?

Are you sure you aren't thinking of readied actions?

Yeah I am sure. I always played even in 3.5 that when something causes an Attack of opportunity it ends the movement, grapple, or whatever triggered it. Which now seems silly since I cannot for the life of me find any reference to that anywhere.

In 3.5 it depends on the action... movement is not stopped, but certain actions such as grapples and disarm attempts are foiled if the AoO deals damage to the attacker. This information can be found in the listings for the individual special combat actions.

In pathfinder a successful attack of opportunity against combat maneuvers doesn't foil the attack entirely, but it does cause a penalty equal to the amount of damage dealt.

Here is rule cwslyclgh mention. I couldn't find it until I checked under

Quote:
Performing a Combat Maneuver: When performing a combat maneuver, you must use an action appropriate to the maneuver you are attempting to perform. While many combat maneuvers can be performed as part of an attack action, full-attack action, or attack of opportunity (in place of a melee attack), others require a specific action. Unless otherwise noted, performing a combat maneuver provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of the maneuver. If you are hit by the target, you take the damage normally and apply that amount as a penalty to the attack roll to perform the maneuver.

There is also feat Stand Still that can be used to stop others with attacks of opportunity.

There is the feat Stand Still for that or the Stalwart Defender's talent that does the same thing.

Those options would be silly if AoOs normally did it.

Okay so the part about other combat maneuvers is right kind of lol. Though I guess I have just been wrong about movement. It does make more sense that they wouldn't stop moving if hit with an Aoo.

Movement can be stopped with Trips Of Opportunity - either Improved Trip to start a trip without provoking AoO to make it clearer or with guisarme to trip opponents within 10 feet while being outside of their threatened reach range oneself).

Fair enough that makes perfect sense now when you mention the Stalwart defenders ability and the Stand Still feat. Thanks for the help muchly appreciated.

AoO's may prevent spells from being cast, but you would need to make a Concentration check, DC is in the magic section I believe.

I hate to be vague so I looked it up:
DC = 10 + damage dealt + spell level
