Eidolons, Summoners and PFO

So, how do you think this will work?

Will the Eidolon be like a mini character that you build with "class abilities" (ie evolutions)? Or will it have set abilities? Maybe a template depending on the "role" you want it to play?
Which evolutions do you think would work and which won't in an online game?

Will you be able to alter it's appearance? Or will there be a few set choices?

What does everyone think?

Hmm, I imagine something along similar lines to whoever gets an animal companion or familiar, but I like the idea of an Eidolon being assigned a certain "mindset" or "skillset" to determine their activity.

The trick is if it is a classless system (skill based instead), then how does one obtain an Eidolon? Probably via perk or feat, I guess.

Good question, though! If they are obtainable, I suppose the only thing that could potentially get tricky is if they can fly, and how far they can fly from their owners.

Though I've always steered away from pet classes in MMOs (I'm too lazy to control yet another character), I do think Summoners lend themselves perfectly to fill that niche.

The game might be classless, but I am very sure the skills will be at least partically designed in line with the class features we see in Pathfinder. Hence, I wouldn't be surprised to see a group of skills relating to Summoner features, namely invoking short-term creatures and the improvement of an eidolon companion.

I imagine it like this:

-You get access to a baseline skill, such as Summoning, which grants you the capacity to, say, cast basic Conjuration spells to summon creatures.

-As you train it up, it opens up a skill tree designed around the Summoner's key class features, in which you have to specialize to gain access to the more defining ones, such as eidolons.

-Eventually, you take the skill Eidolon, granting you a permanen pet. But instead of training it, you handle evolutions through further skill specialties you take (essentially opening more skill trees as you go in). Perhaps certain skill groups could prohibit one another so as to force you into a certain niche depending on your choices (so you can't get all evolutions, for instance).
