Help with A DM

Advice

My DM is will not let me get toughness once I said fine he kept on penalizing me, the problem is that if I were to go to a diffrent game I would die. What should I do about this? I didn't realize we were going to get a cleric soon, well I didn't rember anyway, we had not had one.

I think we could use some clarification before giving out advice.

1)Why does your DM not want you to take toughness?
2)how does he penalize you?
3)i'm not certain what the last part even means. my internet speak is not so good, you know?

sorry for sounding negative, but answers without all of the facts are worse than useless.

He will not let me get toughness because he says I would become a tank, Im a ninja, I got it for survival so I could flank opponents. He gives out special points to upgrade our stuff if we do well. The last part was that I am not a great player so if i decided to quit and find a new group I would be dropped in five sec. flat.

I say talk to your GM about your concerns. If he continues to punish you for a perfectly legal option then I say walk away from the game. You don't have to be "a great player" to play the game and survive. I think I'm a pretty harsh DM and I have several players that aren't "great playrs". To date there have been only 3 deaths in my campaign...

Edited to add Quotation marks.

Where do you play?

Berkley CA?

Sounds like you need a new DM.

1 hitpoint per level doesn't make a ninja a tank.

I've been playing D&D for 23+ years(just new to Pathfinder is all) and I've seen this sort of thing time and time again.

So many DMs are on a power trip. They feel they must control the players.

As a DM I personally try to kill my players every time we play.

Why? Because that's what the monsters would do. I don't do things to them that they couldn't handle(or if I do, I make it obvious that they should run away and fight that mob another day).

And sure, I have my personal house rules as a DM. It's my world, my setting, and my story. But it's being shaped by my players.

I would never tell a player he couldn't take a core feat. I would tell a player he can't take 3rd Party Feats without first getting DM approval.

So yeah. This guy sounds like he's trying to restrict his players way too much.

Get a new DM. Or, if he's a friend, call him out on it, or impeach him. It wouldn't be the first time a DM's been impeached.

I know I was doing it to survive

all is now clear.
if you want to avoid the DM's ire and still up your survivability then the dodge chain could work well for you. that said, disallowing toughness is a harsh measure which would have the DM pelted with dice on principle where i come from, unless he had a D%$# good reason. it's not a game breaking feat, there's no contrevercy surrounding it, and it fits with a ninja (how many movies have you seen where the ninja takes horrific wounds and still goes on kicking ass? all of them? i thought so.).
as to the second point: if he's not allowing you to upgrade your gear as you progress then there's something wrong. please tell me he at least gives you normal loot? Please?!?
as for the last part: i'm a terribly mediocre player, i'll admit that in a second. that doesn't mean my group will kick me out in five seconds flat. who told you that you're not a great player? was it the guy who's purposefully underpowering your character so that you'll underperform and then (as you're not getting upgrades ect because the rest of the party's out performing you) getting progressively weaker as the game goes on.

my advice is to discreetly shop around for a new group and, if things don't improve, give the new DM a go. (this advise is provided without warrenty of any kind, and may cause headaches, nausia and rainbows. not to be taken after pork, shrimp or corn.)

How should I impeach him, I would DM but I am bad at it and the other good DM ussualy sides with him. Also the current main DM ussualy has a temper.

Don't be so hard on yourself there is much more to being a "great player" than understanding every detail of the rules or whatever. Tabletop rpgs are as much a social experience as anything else, being open to other peoples' ideas and fun to interact with are the most important things. The fact that your DM made a completely pointless call and you were willing to soldier on anyway proves that you are most of the way towards being welcome at any reasonable table.

he does, he just is hard to talk to because he has something called autism.

I know but I don't want to be a third wheel.

I should rewrite that, I am ok at none rouge types infact I play a good fighter and control wiz I just have not played a rouge much and each time I tried a couple times but I died

The ninja I'm playing is basically a tank, I don't even have toughness. Your GM is being unreasonable and kind of a jerk. Try talking it out with him. Ninjas are tanks in several games (mostly Final Fantasy), so I'm not sure why the hang up.

thanks

Blue star what is your ninja's lvl.

12, but I've been a tank since level 4.

You might want to try PFS games, there are several places around the Bay Area that do it. It would allow you to play, with specific rules, and you could become a "better" player. More impt you can have fun!!

PFSis free. You just need to be able to get to the table. Basically you design a 1st or 2nd level character sit down and start playing. This would also be the perfect opportunity to meet new players and maybe form a new group.

Ok......
I still can't understand how and why he doens't let you to take toughness, unless of course he has house ruled it (for example put a CON 18 as a pre-req) or outright banned it.
And his reason sounds b%s(^#)t.

I am going to agree with many others and say you probably want to be looking for a new dm. Banning toughness? Really? This is the kind of power trip that shouldn't be tolerated as a player.

If like Vuvu recommends you would like to try out pathfinder society go here to find out what is going on in your area, and to find out who your venture captains/lieutenants are (people in charge of setting up organized play in the area).

Now these are organized play games which is a little different then normal, but they are also used to taking on new players and will help you get used to things, and also hopefully put you into contact with other gamers in your area.

Well as a DM I have toyed around with having a con (10-12) prereq for toughness. you dont need to be a good player to play I have in my time as a dm only seen my group kick one person out and that was because they HATED his personality both as a person and a player But many "bad players" have stayed in my group. I was annoyed with him but that is neither here nor there if you don't like it there is probably another group in your area.
