What alignment is Sredni Vashtar?

Hmmm, depends on how you look at it. I'm leaning a bit more to neutral evil. Granted it killed, but did it do so out of malice and the enjoyment of the act?

!!!

EDIT:

Spoiler:
It's possible, possible mind you, that bands are running out of things to sing about.

"Sredni Vashtar went forth,

His thoughts were red thoughts and his teeth were white.
His enemies called for peace, but he brought them death.
Sredni Vashtar the Beautiful."

I think so.....hard to tell just what his mood was exactly, but there's at least a bit of malice there.

Well, that was Conradin's chant, so it could be that Conradin is a chaotic evil follower of a neutral evil god. After all, Sredni Vashtar didn't go get Conradin, who had in effect imprisoned said god. He just ran out, washed up and went on his way.

One could argue that he is a good god having rid the world of a power mad and spiteful person. A good god with a bad attitude. ;)

EDIT: Also, that quote would seem to indicate he was a god of vengeance (which would also fit with the ending). I would list that more in line with neutral evil than chaotic as it would be focused violence for a specific reason, rather than violence for the sake of violence.

I was thinking neutral evil at first myself; he just seems to be such a gnarly little shit though....

Any which way you look at it, he is a little bad ass. Not one you would want to, say, sneak up on in a shed. ;)

Just to give him stolen nutmeg....

IDK, I just associate mayhem and slaughter with chaotic evil more than neutral evil for some reason.

Neutral evil will kill you, but chaotic evil will pull your brain out, put it on its head, and say,

"LOOK AT ME!!! I'M DAVY CROCKETT!!!"

THAT is the vibe I get from Sredni Vashtar.....

LOL, that's a visual that will stick with me.

I can see that. I mean the kid definitely feared him. So was the worship due to the fear or did the worship feed the fear? Or was it a self fueling cycle that built up Sreni Vashtar's into godhood?

Or maybe the Starstone was under the bedding ...

The old nuke power pland dude did it on the Simpson's.....

heh heh.

HEY! An alignment thread, with actual disagreement, that didn't end douchily!!!

I credit that to the fact we were only one step away in our alignment assessments. ;)

And, of course, the quality of the people involved in the discussion. :)

AND it's about Sredni Vashtar.

I think Sredni Vashtar was a honey badger.

Maybe Sredni Vashtar was watching the thread, waiting for it to turn ugly so he could manifest and unleash his wrath and we just subconsciously picked up on it ...

And I am waiting for Taig to now show up and claim to be related to Srendi Vashtar. ;)

Sredni Vashtar is a large polecat-ferret. I love Saki's short stories, it's like PG Wodehouse turned upside down so that maliciousness, malice and cynicism rise to the top. Very funny as well. Sredni, being an animal, is neutral and coundn't care less about either Conraddin or Mrs De Ropp and is a vehicle for Saki to express his antipathy for the manners and social graces of the time. Saki kicks ass and could punch out EM Forster any day of the week.

That assumes that he is just a critter and not indeed a god. If he was the deity that Conradin worshiped, what would his alignment be? That, from my understanding, was the intent of the discussion.

I was just watching a film of a honey badger walking around fragging stuff on Youtube, and I thought of Sredni Vashtar and reread it on the interwebz, and remembered back to 15 and a "Temple of Sredni Vashtar" that I was making that went nowhere's......
kinda open ended stream of consciousness stuff.
