"I can't believe he's really dead"
With book 13 almost here it is time to start the conspiracy theories.
My complete guess is it had to be the White Court. However the attempted hit in front of the FBI building is confusing. Only Martin and Sanya were told by Harry where he was going after the battle with the Red's and Martin may have let it slip.
Or was Murphy followed after she figured out where he would be?
Someone else must have figured it out too.

Aye, if the first chapter is the afterlife, and the 'other side' is NOT the side of Angels, pretty good chance we're looking at the Denarians.
Though I wouldn't put it past the Summer Knight with a sniper rifle. Having Harry opposite you in the Courts would be quite the killer!
Also, Harry taking up the Mantle, 'dying', and coming back to life satisfies Mab's promise that he would come to serve her, while also jettisoning the Winter Knight mantle promptly for future books.
I really don't care, I'm just bummed the book didn't come out around Easter like all the others.

It happened exactly the way he told harry he would do it. It could well be Jim playing with our expectations but look.
We have had several hints he is more/other than human.
Dresden saw him with wizard sight and we did not get a clear description. This is the only time this had happened.
They are rivals for Murphy.
The aquarium fight played up exactly how good he is with a rifle.
Now as to why he would do it, no clue. If the Archive is still alive then the Archive ordered it. I don't think the Hellhound can disobey.
Now why would the Archive kill Dresden.
Insanity? Maybe. There has been some warnings about the stress that little girl is under. Odd way to introduce the idea but jim is good at twists.
I say however that the Archive ordered Dresden's death to protect him.
She knows he will find a way back, and she knows he needs to be gone for a while.
What happens if Dresden dies.
The death curse hanging over him is discharged.
Winter needs a new knight.
His brother gets seriously angry.
The swords have no owner.
Contingencies that his mother/father/blackstaff set for him may vanish.
Bob may remember/be released
Most importantly though, no one is feeding mister.

Isn't the point of these books that he gets beat up, shot and almost dies in all of them? I'm missing something here.
The very end of the last book
The short story set hours later in 'side jobs'
The next book is titled Ghost Story
My thoughts on the shooter:

I like Cpt. Kirstov's idea. I don't think it is Poor Wandering Ones suspect because it wasn't a headshot.
I do, too, and that's someone I hadn't really considered. Of course...

Thanks guys! I've gone through Audible.com the last few months and re-bought all of the series in audiobook format... so a lot of the things I had forgotten are fresh in my mind. The one thing that might make that interesting is:

I'm on board with this as well. Just what was in that frosting covered donut Harry ate, a tracking spell?

Crap I didn't even think that he accepted food from a fae there.

Another piece of evidence pointing to my suspicion, then, which is that Fix is the culprit, under orders from Titania. Though I'll admit that it's tempting to blame the Denarians.

Fix is where I am leaning also;
on order from a Summer Queen or because he is scared of Harry, I am thinking Harry should have given Fix a call to say he was taking the job; but Harry is not that polite. Fix did mention that typically it was Winter Knights who kill Summer Knights; so maybe this is inner court intrigue; still like the Odin thing and Harry dead for three nights...if that happens; all kinds of intrigue there.
| Valegrim |
No, serious spoiler here; beware.
susan was a half vampire who never took a life so never turned into a full red court vampire until the last 10 minutes of her life in the last book; which made her the youngest vampire thus made the bloodline curse effective to kill all the red court vampires.
Wasn't that Susan a shape-shifted Red?

My personal theory: None of the above.
I think whoever that was finally succeeded. Which eliminates Kincaid, Fix, and several others as suspects, since they had no reason to kill him that far back.
Who is it? I'd bet on, well, a normal person. Some perfectly unpowered person we've met in passing whose life Harry seriously messed up in the course of doing what he does.

Ok, I have another question (below), but first this question: the Red King was able to renege on his deal with Harry and side-step the Unseelie Accords, because he said it was not he who spoke the agreement.
Now, how true do you think this is, could he just being lying, one way or the other, and give his word and then break it because he is evil and knows he is going to kill Harry anyways??
The answer to this question then makes ask this question (my real question): Mab never spoke when she and Harry made their deal! Is it possible there is no deal, or did Harry’s killing the previous Winter Knight seal the deal no matter what??

Fey do love their technicalities and loopholes... but I think the intimate manner in which that particular deal was sealed didn't really require words. =]

Mab already held up her end of that deal, so how would that matter? I mean, she'd have to go back in time to break her word, and that doesn't seem like her style.

After a few days of thinking about the Monoc Securities angle, I no longer think this can be it.
The reason for my change of mind is I just do not think Odin rolls that way.

Why dont we all just agree Murphy did it to obtain Mister cause he's the coolest cat in the world?
Does anyone remember the FBI agents that were skin changers????? He has more enemies than a Hillbilly has toes. I dont know who did it but I would love to see it be some wicked twist. The book cant get here fast enough.

No Way!
NO WAY!
NOOOOOOOOO WAAAAAAAAAY !!!!!!!!!!!!
.
I just finished it tonight.
I can't wait for Cold Days. I can't wait!!!
I know exactly how you feel. Been there for awhile now. Sadly I don't think he's even started Cold Days yet.
Come the new year, I'll start Cold Days. With any luck, there will be snow on the ground when it happens, and I can write the first few chapters with the only light in the room being reflected from the snow outside. That would be perfect. :)
