Read a book as a very small child, have a niece getting to the right age, but I can't remember the name and google isn't helping.
The plot, as I remember it, is a young boy who wakes up one night, having been shrunk. He's in the kitchen and its inhabited by fairies, different kinds in the sink, dishwasher, refrigerator etc. I believe the vacuum cleaner or the cat make an appearance as monsters.
Anyone else remember this story? Maybe it's one of those weird obscure Canadian children's books.

I believe you're remembering "Tooth Fairy" by Audrey Wood. A couple kids leave fake teeth for the tooth fairy and are shrunk as punishment.
You might also be recalling "The Shrinking of Treehorn" by Florence Heide which is notably illustrated by Edward Gorey.

This book sounds very familiar to me as well. I've tried a couple of different searches, including Google and Amazon, and what I came up with is George Shrinks. It doesn't have faeries, but it does seem to have the other details you mention. It doesn't sound quite right, though...
