How does trip work?

Rules Questions

Hi all,

Our group has a couple of characters with the trip ability, namely a ranseor and a wolf whose bit can trip. I am trying to figure out what the save is against it. Is it a straight up CMB vs CMD roll? It isn't automatic just because the weapon causes it right? Thanks

Sasha

You will probably want to read through the rules on Combat Maneuvers.

But basically, you declare the action to trip and roll a d20 adding your CMB and any modifiers. If this number beats the target's CMD the trip is a success, normally the attack deals no damage. This action does normally provoke an attack of opportunity from the target however, so without the proper feats you run the risk of getting attacked every time you try it.

Also, note that many creatures are immune to trips.

Also, if you fail your trip check by more than (10?) then you yourself are tripped instead. The benefit of a weapon with the 'trip' special is that instead of being tripped for such a failure, you can drop the weapon instead. Other than that, you can trip with any weapon.

Also, do realize that manufactured weapons with the trip feature and natural attacks with the trip ability work differently.

When a creature uses a natural attack that has the trip ability, it attacks normally. If the attack hits, it deals damage and it is allowed to make an additional attack roll for free to trip its foe. The result of this roll + the animals CMB is compared against the target's CMD to determine the success of the maneuver.

To trip an opponent with a manufactured weapon, you make the attempt in place of the regular attack. You roll to attack (using your CMB instead of your regular attack bonus) against your opponent's CMD. You can attempt a trip maneuver in place of a melee attack using any weapon. It does not have to have the trip feature. That feature for these weapons simply provides the benefit Kazaan describes.

Okay thanks. That clears it up a lot between the animal and weapons.
