I'm shocked, simply shocked at the news and here.
What a terrible loss, an irreplaceable talent to the comic book industry.
How on Earth did I miss this!
Christ. I was just re-reading his runs on Deathlok and Damage Control a few months ago and wishing he'd get more work with Marvel.
He not only possessed a keen wit and deep empathy that resonated on every page, but he also used the medium as a platform to discuss moral and social issues in a frank manner that many of his contemporaries shied away from. Never one to deliver easy answers or cheap escapism, McDuffie wrote characters that were both human and genuinely heroic. I can think of no better way to eulogize him than with a quote from Deathlok Annual #1:
"Any moron can shoot a problem in the kneecaps. But if you want to have a positive effect in the world that you live in, you have to do what's right, not what's easiest."
RIP, Mr. McDuffie.
