The Nun's used to rap my mothers knuckles when writing with her Left hand until my grand pa showed up to school one day in full military uniform and spoke very very calmly and quietly to them to stop. She was allowed to write with her left then.

Yeah, my aunt was left handed and forced to change by the teachers too, but my mom, the youngest, wasn't forced to change.

My handwriting has always been atrocious, but I was allowed to remain left handed.

Students in Japan are forced to write right handed as well. The funny thing is, the way the letters are formed, it took me 20 times as long to write something right handed, but the letters did flow much better - if only I had the fine motor control and practice to write quickly enough to make it practical! :)
