I will finish VI one day... One day.

Apparently next summer (assuming I won't come to England again). I won't be sitting naked in front of computer in winter.

Speaking of guides, I find myself using guides a lot more these days than I would have when I was younger. Possibly a reflection of having less time to commit to games, and figuring things out myself.

Yeah, you know? Final Fantasy VI? The greatest video computer-game of all time?

Silly Freehold, you didn't fix it, you borked it. :P

VI is a great choice, excellent game and characters. VII was my first, and will always be my favourite. I probably have more hours in it than in any other game I've played, with more than a couple full playthroughs. Still pick the same team every time though. :P

More seriously, VIII is my least favourite of the pre XI series by a significant margin. It is not a very good FF, and not a very good game at all, in my opinion.

Heh, don't tell Ebon that, it's her favorite.

You mean Ebon is THE ONE PERSON who liked VIII?

Her arrival was foretold.

I know some people who not only say VIII is their favourite FF, but their favourite game of all time. I can only assume this means they've played no other games.

And FFX, X-2, and XII. I know, I'm a heretic. I have FFVII on Steam but can't seem to get into the story.

I actually found X-2 pretty fun. Could be something to do with my love of the job system. That or girls in constantly changing costumes.

FF VII is a slow burner. The longer it goes on, the deeper the story and characters become, as more of their story unfolds and backstory is revealed.

Nah, Dark Alliance was the pinnacle of the Baldur's Gate series. Truly, none of the others in the series came close.

Seriously though:
EXPLOSIVE RUNES

Super Cereal:
I didn't play the Baldur's Gate series, outside of the PS2 incarnation, until the Enhanced Edition came out. It was fun, but not very high on my list, and I ended up not finishing them.

I loved FFVII, but never got the chance to finish it. I got really close 5 times, but twice my computer crashed and I lost my saves, once my roommate at the time "accidentally" deleted my save, and then when I tried it on the PlayStation I lost the memory card. I have beaten 1, 2, and 3 (as they were released here, I'm not sure of the Japanese numbering). I also beat one on the SNES that I think was called Final Fantasy Tactics, but I'm not sure of the name. I know I didn't really care for it because it was too easy and incorporated some platforming elements. Also, I don't think there were any truly random encounters. You could see the enemies walking around the map and could avoid most of them.

Now I kind of want to get my NES and SNES from my parents and play some of those old games again, but I've been replaying Skyrim and don't want to stop that. Although maybe I should proceed along the main quest a little more in Skyrim. I haven't retrieved the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller (or whatever) for the Greybeards yet , and I'm already level 40 or 41.

Man, that sucks. PM me if you're on Steam and want a copy. No one who's gotten so close to finishing so many times should be denied their ending.

Tactics was on the Playstation, another good one. Definitely not an easy one. Sounds like TOZ identified the actual "offender".

That's an aspect I love and hate about big sandbox games. I've not beaten the last few Fallouts / Elder Scrolls, cause I just burned myself out spending hours and hours leveling and exploring the world. Still incredibly fun though. :)

More of a crappy bed and the fact that parents were getting up early in the morning and, while they not woke me up directly, probably roused me enough to wake myself up when I was turning from side to side.

As always, the little one has settled into his visit like he had never left. I wish he didn't have to. :( But that won't stop me making the most of every second he's here. He's feeding himself now, will not accept being fed one gram of food. You know that feeding trick you see some times, where a parent has the spoon and goes "Here comes the choo-choo train, choo-choo!" and brings the spoon around in the air to get the kid to open their mouth for it? Or "here comes the aeroplane"? Well, he does that for himself with every spoon. Which usually results in half the food being flung around the room before it reaches his mouth. But I'll forgive him. It's freakin' adorable. Also gave him a corn on the cob with his dinner last night. After unsuccessfully attempting to get it on his spoon a few times, he eventually picked it up, and munched in. The resulting mess led me to the believe that he really likes corn. ^_^

Admittedly part of the reason VII is not higher on my list is a bit of annoyance at how it's Square's favorite and has gotten so much attention compared to the entire rest of the series. It's gotten more spinoff games than any other FF, its characters show up more often in other media*, it got its own freakin' movie.

But it's not a bad game in any sense of the word, and it does to this day remain Square's best-selling product of all time, even not counting all the spinoffs and pre/sequels. So I'm not surprised they milk it for everything it's worth.

And the SNES era games are getting some love now, between the various remakes and IV getting a sequel. (VI's ending makes it particularly difficult to make a sequel for, as well, which is probably one reason why it's not gotten further attention.**)

That said I consider VI much the same. Especially compared to IV and V, the characters are much deeper, much more developed, their individual stories are more complete and more involved (heck, even the caveman boy gets plot development; the only ones who don't are the two secret characters, really), and the entire plot is more thorough than previous stories, and some to follow as well.

*:
Kingdom Hearts, for example, had five characters from VII - Cid, Aerith, Yuffie, Cloud, and Sephiroth - with only Squall and Selphie from VIII and Tidus and Wakka [in tiny kid form] from X, no one from IX and no one from anything prior until KH2 which had a single character from the SNES era - Setzer - but also added more VII characters by bringing in Vincent. [Who, admittedly, IS my favorite VII character. I'm not horribly upset that he got Dirge of Cerberus, of all the characters in VII I think he's the one whose backstory needed an entire other game to be fully developed.]

**:
Any reasonable VI sequel is going to have to come up with a reason why the Magic comes back after Kefka's death. Because I can't think of many people who would enjoy an FF game with no Magic, and to be story- and world-consistent that would include no Lores for Strago, no magical Rages for Gau, no magical Blitzes for Sabin, and perhaps even go so far as disabling special abilities that are clearly magical in nature, such as Setzer's Slot, Relm's Sketch, Celes's Runic, and so forth. Terra obviously wouldn't be able to Morph/Trance unless something plotwise happened to restore her lost half-Esper status, which unless she's simply not playable, which would cause its own batch of annoyances, would bother many players not to have.

I don't think it would be a bad thing, I think it could be an interesting plot, one I've actually considered ideas of my own on. (Yes, the dreaded fanfiction monster reared its head in my life a few times. The horror. The horror!) But until Square - or someone else - decides to tackle the challenge, we'll really never know.

Which is a Wednesday. Meaning between work and church, I'll maybe have just enough time to swing by and grab the key. Maybe drop off the bath towels and bed covers sitting in my trunk.

Dad won't be available to help move the big furniture until the weekend, so the actual moving-in will be delayed until Saturday or Sunday. Which admittedly means I'll be able to still run Kingmaker that week Thursday, and there'll be plenty of time for the power and internet to be activated before I move in.

I'm very happy with it. The location is extremely convenient - lots of stuff within short driving distances, some cases even walkable - and with enough open space and elbow room that it doesn't feel like a cramped middle-of-the-city complex. My apartment looks out over the field between us and the nearby main street, rather than toward the complex's parking lot, so the view is nice.

And most of all, I never have to use the annoyingly-busy road that is currently my main route to and from work (and a major source of much of my work-related stress) again. If I want to visit my parents from my new place, there's a much more convenient and much less crowded back road that leads nearly straight to their door.

On that note, there's a list of things I'll need to be shopping for in bits and pieces over the next week. I got all the bathroom towels/washcloths/shower curtain stuff done yesterday as well as sheets/blankets for a mattress I don't yet have. I have all the dishes I'll need except the bigger pots/pans/skillets/etc., which a coworker is looking into possibly giving me; whatever she can't provide I'll need to buy.

It's mostly the little things I'll need to get for myself. Dishwashing stuff, since the apartment lacks a dishwasher of all things. Laundry stuff... well, really just laundry soap and the like, I have baskets and things. Housecleaning stuff. Bathroom soap and other toiletries. And so on and so forth. And I know inevitably there's going to be something I'll miss and need to make a quick trip out to Walmart/Aldi/whatever to snag at the last second.

I had never realised just how popular it was, oddly. I mean, you'd think the 3 games, a movie, 2 OVA's, and a series of short stories may have given it away, as well as how high it and its characters usually rank on polls of popular games/characters, but I just always assumed it was another cult classic. You just prompted me to look at its wiki page, and it really was massive. Huh.

It's true about VI. No doubt about it, it really did develop full characters, ones you wanted to learn more about... I'm actually tempted to add a replay to my list now. Heck, I'm half tempted to add the whole FF series, it's been years since I've played one. They died with the MMO for me.

Secret Character:
One of the secret characters has some kind of backstory hinted to, referring to the previous game. Gogo was the name of the boss who protected the Crystal Shard which granted the Mime job in FFV.

RE*:
VV is my favourite too. I get the feeling he's pretty popular. :P I must have, like, a half dozen models of him, between his Turks incarnation and his VII one. Yuffie's my second favourite. Anyways, they were all over KH, weren't they? The extent of the sales of VII really makes me understand why they're all over the place now.

RE**:
Is it just me, or would it be really cool to play that as an RPG? :P I get what you mean, and I'd certainly miss magic in a FF. Maybe it's slowly returning, no magic at the start, and then it slowly bleeds back into the world.

Hahah! Well, so noted, and enjoy the opportunity to consider yourself educated then =)

But yeah, it really is a huge franchise, and even just limiting it to the original game itself (counting rereleases like the "Greatest Hits" label and the Steam release) it's still the best-selling game in the entire series. It's not too surprising it's Square's main focus, and the source of its largest fandom.

Given all that, and the declining nature of the later games in the FF series as a whole from most players' standpoints I've heard/read, it's kind of surprising they haven't done a straight-forward sequel. Advent Children was fairly short, compared to the full-length plot of a game. Dirge of Cerberus was more a side-story than a sequel, since its cast and the scope of the game were fairly limited compared to the entirety of the world it's set in.

I vaguely recall someone saying that one of the higher-up Square mucketymucks put out a statement that a full, direct FFVII sequel wouldn't come until another game outperformed the original, but that's becoming increasingly unlikely, if it was even an accurate quote in the first place.

Dark Archive

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The quote I heard was that one of the leads on the original team said they wouldn't make a sequel until the original could no longer be played on modern gaming consoles. Which was just about the only reason I was glad when backwards compatibility stopped being the standard. Only for the blasted thing to get a Steam release! :P Of course, as with all "quotes" one hears on the internet, who knows what the real story is.

I won't comment on the decline of the series. I'd like to, but it wouldn't be kind, and I probably wouldn't be giving them fair credit. I hope that the popularity of the revivals/remakes will encourage them to return to their origins though.

EDIT : I found your quote linked on the wiki ;

"[we] will only consider this once a brand new game in the franchise exceeds the quality of that found in FF7."

Probably for the best =)

And yeah, I don't take it as gospel until I can get a source, and "some guy on a forum" is hardly authoritative. Still, it's a fairly-commonly repeated claim in communities where such games are discussed frequently, so I don't want to put it completely out of the realm of possibility.

I just hope the successes of VII, VIII, and III on Steam may raise the possibility of the other games, at least up to X/X-2, making the jump to PC as well.

Say wha?

Yeah, you know? Final Fantasy VII? The greatest video computer-game of all time?

;)

No. Nononono.

Baldur's Gate and BG2 remain my favorites.

now for the real fun... :P

Nah, Dark Alliance was the pinnacle of the Baldur's Gate series. Truly, none of the others in the series came close.

I played them way back when they were first released. They were my first introduction into RPGs, and really they were what got me hooked into computer/video games.

I have a long list of favorites, actually. However, nothing beats those two for me.

EDIT : I found your quote linked on the wiki ;

"[we] will only consider this once a brand new game in the franchise exceeds the quality of that found in FF7."

Yay source.

So. "Quality" is pretty subjective. If you ask Freehold, he'll say - as he has several times already - that FFVII's quality has already been beaten. I'd be inclined to agree, given how many games I've rated ahead of it. You and other fans would likely disagree. So the only nonsubjective means to judge would have to be sales. Some new SquareEnix game is going to have to outsell FFVII. And... well, that's not happening any time soon, I would estimate, as I said before. (And that's being generous and again sticking to just the original game itself and re-releases, not counting all the other merchandise. If they include that... yeah, never happening.)
