Silly Freehold, you didn't fix it, you borked it. :P
VI is a great choice, excellent game and characters. VII was my first, and will always be my favourite. I probably have more hours in it than in any other game I've played, with more than a couple full playthroughs. Still pick the same team every time though. :P

FF VII is a slow burner. The longer it goes on, the deeper the story and characters become, as more of their story unfolds and backstory is revealed.

I loved FFVII, but never got the chance to finish it. I got really close 5 times, but twice my computer crashed and I lost my saves, once my roommate at the time "accidentally" deleted my save, and then when I tried it on the PlayStation I lost the memory card. I have beaten 1, 2, and 3 (as they were released here, I'm not sure of the Japanese numbering). I also beat one on the SNES that I think was called Final Fantasy Tactics, but I'm not sure of the name. I know I didn't really care for it because it was too easy and incorporated some platforming elements. Also, I don't think there were any truly random encounters. You could see the enemies walking around the map and could avoid most of them.
Now I kind of want to get my NES and SNES from my parents and play some of those old games again, but I've been replaying Skyrim and don't want to stop that. Although maybe I should proceed along the main quest a little more in Skyrim. I haven't retrieved the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller (or whatever) for the Greybeards yet , and I'm already level 40 or 41.
Man, that sucks. PM me if you're on Steam and want a copy. No one who's gotten so close to finishing so many times should be denied their ending.
Tactics was on the Playstation, another good one. Definitely not an easy one. Sounds like TOZ identified the actual "offender".
That's an aspect I love and hate about big sandbox games. I've not beaten the last few Fallouts / Elder Scrolls, cause I just burned myself out spending hours and hours leveling and exploring the world. Still incredibly fun though. :)

More of a crappy bed and the fact that parents were getting up early in the morning and, while they not woke me up directly, probably roused me enough to wake myself up when I was turning from side to side.

FF VII is a slow burner. The longer it goes on, the deeper the story and characters become, as more of their story unfolds and backstory is revealed.
Admittedly part of the reason VII is not higher on my list is a bit of annoyance at how it's Square's favorite and has gotten so much attention compared to the entire rest of the series. It's gotten more spinoff games than any other FF, its characters show up more often in other media*, it got its own freakin' movie.
But it's not a bad game in any sense of the word, and it does to this day remain Square's best-selling product of all time, even not counting all the spinoffs and pre/sequels. So I'm not surprised they milk it for everything it's worth.
And the SNES era games are getting some love now, between the various remakes and IV getting a sequel. (VI's ending makes it particularly difficult to make a sequel for, as well, which is probably one reason why it's not gotten further attention.**)
That said I consider VI much the same. Especially compared to IV and V, the characters are much deeper, much more developed, their individual stories are more complete and more involved (heck, even the caveman boy gets plot development; the only ones who don't are the two secret characters, really), and the entire plot is more thorough than previous stories, and some to follow as well.
I don't think it would be a bad thing, I think it could be an interesting plot, one I've actually considered ideas of my own on. (Yes, the dreaded fanfiction monster reared its head in my life a few times. The horror. The horror!) But until Square - or someone else - decides to tackle the challenge, we'll really never know.

I have an official apartment move-in date - September 3rd.
Which is a Wednesday. Meaning between work and church, I'll maybe have just enough time to swing by and grab the key. Maybe drop off the bath towels and bed covers sitting in my trunk.
Dad won't be available to help move the big furniture until the weekend, so the actual moving-in will be delayed until Saturday or Sunday. Which admittedly means I'll be able to still run Kingmaker that week Thursday, and there'll be plenty of time for the power and internet to be activated before I move in.

I'm very happy with it. The location is extremely convenient - lots of stuff within short driving distances, some cases even walkable - and with enough open space and elbow room that it doesn't feel like a cramped middle-of-the-city complex. My apartment looks out over the field between us and the nearby main street, rather than toward the complex's parking lot, so the view is nice.
And most of all, I never have to use the annoyingly-busy road that is currently my main route to and from work (and a major source of much of my work-related stress) again. If I want to visit my parents from my new place, there's a much more convenient and much less crowded back road that leads nearly straight to their door.

I'm not on Steam. My computer sucks big hairy monkey balls. Sometimes I'm surprised it can manage me browsing the forums. And if I really get the urge to play it again, I have my brother's PS2 and a copy of the game stuck somewhere in my spare bedroom. But thanks for the offer.

On that note, there's a list of things I'll need to be shopping for in bits and pieces over the next week. I got all the bathroom towels/washcloths/shower curtain stuff done yesterday as well as sheets/blankets for a mattress I don't yet have. I have all the dishes I'll need except the bigger pots/pans/skillets/etc., which a coworker is looking into possibly giving me; whatever she can't provide I'll need to buy.
It's mostly the little things I'll need to get for myself. Dishwashing stuff, since the apartment lacks a dishwasher of all things. Laundry stuff... well, really just laundry soap and the like, I have baskets and things. Housecleaning stuff. Bathroom soap and other toiletries. And so on and so forth. And I know inevitably there's going to be something I'll miss and need to make a quick trip out to Walmart/Aldi/whatever to snag at the last second.

I had never realised just how popular it was, oddly. I mean, you'd think the 3 games, a movie, 2 OVA's, and a series of short stories may have given it away, as well as how high it and its characters usually rank on polls of popular games/characters, but I just always assumed it was another cult classic. You just prompted me to look at its wiki page, and it really was massive. Huh.
It's true about VI. No doubt about it, it really did develop full characters, ones you wanted to learn more about... I'm actually tempted to add a replay to my list now. Heck, I'm half tempted to add the whole FF series, it's been years since I've played one. They died with the MMO for me.

"Captain, my sarcasm detector is detecting high volume in this sector." ;)
One of the secret characters has some kind of backstory hinted to, referring to the previous game. Gogo was the name of the boss who protected the Crystal Shard which granted the Mime job in FFV.
Is it just me, or would it be really cool to play that as an RPG? :P I get what you mean, and I'd certainly miss magic in a FF. Maybe it's slowly returning, no magic at the start, and then it slowly bleeds back into the world.
Believe me, I've toyed with the idea. I like to tinker around with RPG Maker, and I think it would be a fun project. Who knows, maybe I'll do something with it. And people who can tolerate fangames could playtest it for me =)

Hahah! Well, so noted, and enjoy the opportunity to consider yourself educated then =)
But yeah, it really is a huge franchise, and even just limiting it to the original game itself (counting rereleases like the "Greatest Hits" label and the Steam release) it's still the best-selling game in the entire series. It's not too surprising it's Square's main focus, and the source of its largest fandom.
Given all that, and the declining nature of the later games in the FF series as a whole from most players' standpoints I've heard/read, it's kind of surprising they haven't done a straight-forward sequel. Advent Children was fairly short, compared to the full-length plot of a game. Dirge of Cerberus was more a side-story than a sequel, since its cast and the scope of the game were fairly limited compared to the entirety of the world it's set in.
I vaguely recall someone saying that one of the higher-up Square mucketymucks put out a statement that a full, direct FFVII sequel wouldn't come until another game outperformed the original, but that's becoming increasingly unlikely, if it was even an accurate quote in the first place.

The quote I heard was that one of the leads on the original team said they wouldn't make a sequel until the original could no longer be played on modern gaming consoles. Which was just about the only reason I was glad when backwards compatibility stopped being the standard. Only for the blasted thing to get a Steam release! :P Of course, as with all "quotes" one hears on the internet, who knows what the real story is.
I won't comment on the decline of the series. I'd like to, but it wouldn't be kind, and I probably wouldn't be giving them fair credit. I hope that the popularity of the revivals/remakes will encourage them to return to their origins though.
EDIT : I found your quote linked on the wiki ;
| Orthos |
Probably for the best =)
And yeah, I don't take it as gospel until I can get a source, and "some guy on a forum" is hardly authoritative. Still, it's a fairly-commonly repeated claim in communities where such games are discussed frequently, so I don't want to put it completely out of the realm of possibility.
I just hope the successes of VII, VIII, and III on Steam may raise the possibility of the other games, at least up to X/X-2, making the jump to PC as well.

EDIT : I found your quote linked on the wiki ;
Yay source.
So. "Quality" is pretty subjective. If you ask Freehold, he'll say - as he has several times already - that FFVII's quality has already been beaten. I'd be inclined to agree, given how many games I've rated ahead of it. You and other fans would likely disagree. So the only nonsubjective means to judge would have to be sales. Some new SquareEnix game is going to have to outsell FFVII. And... well, that's not happening any time soon, I would estimate, as I said before. (And that's being generous and again sticking to just the original game itself and re-releases, not counting all the other merchandise. If they include that... yeah, never happening.)
