Start a blog :P

Yeah, settings can be better than us lot talking randomly. And with the historical/ mythological influences very interesting and educational.

Should I make a blog, too?* Also, I went for the whole "more than one pantheon" thing due to having five continents in my own setting, though that's subject to change. I should put my focus on the "Europe" continent unless the players want to play in one of the other ones. Either way, I guess I feel better now though I should also work out the relations between deities in my setting in more detail as well.

* = Actually, I lack the time and the focus to keep up a blog...

Oh great. Now I should post a naked picture on my blog...

I think we can do without >_>

That's the main reason I haven't done it myself heh. I have a subforum for worldbuilding on the forum my gaming group uses to coordinate stuff, which is where most of our ideas have been bounced around.

I guess before I get into the pantheon too much deeper I should probably elucidate a little on the setting itself...

Which I'll do on my lunch break when I have time to do so without being interrupted or too distracted from work =)

Darn RL and it's constant distractions. ;P

The only reason I'm still on right now is because it's been a really slow day =)

You could. Something to read is always appreciated. As long as it is in human language. Or at least English.

Focus, yeah, I certainly need more of it... Wait what's that?! Oooh! Shiny!

Oh! Isn't that precious!

...

What litter do you think she uses? I've been looking for a good industrial strength cat sand brand...

Sovereign Court

In all seriousness, there was a Hoarding episode whose commercial I couldn't get through. She was hoarding cats. She used her fridge and freezers as the cat cemetary - filled with feline bodies. The place was so full of ammonia from used litter on the floor and feces that most of the kittens were stillborn or deformed. I had to turn that crap off.

ugh

I would love to get another cat. But my two geriatic kitties are too old and set in their ways to deal with a young whipper snapper of a kitten. I"ll just take care of my senior kitties and call it good.

Scarab Sages

I refuse to watch the show hoarders. Not only am I sure it would creep me out, but I don't want to recognize anybody.

Scarab Sages

I really don't want to be here for another 3 hours.

Scarab Sages

Anyway, can't stick around. Got a question that needs answering. Sad part is, it was supposed to be answered already...by the douche who eventually got the promotion I interviewed for. Unfortunately, he's an old friend of the boss, so I'll probably be picking up his slack for a few years.

Alrighty, here goes.

I guess a bit of history is in order, to begin.

Ebon and I created the setting about four years ago, originally at about a quarter the size it has become (possibly less), for two reasons. One was to provide a homebrew setting for her stories regarding our old Neverwinter Nights characters from our very first server, particularly her rogue character Bella Tentazione. While the server we originally played these characters on was based on Faerun, she wanted to create her own setting from scratch, to avoid copyright issues as well as canon complications of dealing with FR (further complexified by the 4E transition, as the server was set in 3E FR).

The second reason is actually pretty core to that first quarter of the setting. We had recently broken off from the NWN server we were playing on at that time (circa 2008ish), the Cormyr-Dalelands Project, due to disagreements with several of the staff members at that time: a large lot of them were badly suffering from the Stormwind Fallacy. (Among other things, this was the staff group that had posted the announcement: "Why you should Love to Lose". It was a page-long speech/rant that was basically summed up as "If you win, you never learn anything. Therefore if you win, you are a poor roleplayer. Don't be a poor roleplayer and dirty powergamer. Learn to love to lose. I always prefer it when my character loses. So should you.") Fed up and frustrated with the climate created by the staff at that time - one that was, thank all the gods, very swiftly cleaned up when the head admin returned from his military stint, resulting in most of the offending staffers ragequitting the server - we left with the intent of creating our own server, in a homebrew setting (leaving us free of ties to any setting's existing canon). We titled the server "Stormwind Paradigm" to keep the reason for our departure in mind; to tie the setting to the name, we named the first continent we created Stormwind.

There, long out-of-setting backstory complete =) Now I can actually talk about the setting itself =P

Stormwind is one of the two continents in the northern hemisphere of Finiens ("horizon" in Latin, according to Scint - so named for the original concept of the world's creation being "where the gods of earth and sky met, there the world was born", an idea that was later discarded) The climate is typical of North America - temperate in the southeast, desert in the southwest, mountainous in the middle, tropical in the southernmost reaches and islands beyond, taiga and tundra in the north. It's divided into four roughly equal territories, plus a few smaller ones.

Olympia: Olympia stretches from the middle of the continent both laterally and longitudinally to the corresponding coasts, claiming the southeast corner of the continent. The majority of the terrain within is rolling temperate plains, bordered to the north by the highly-evergreen Sentara Forest where the Elves reside and the northeastern branch of The Titans, a mountain range that cuts up from the center-south of the continent then branches into a Y-shape halfway up before spreading northeast and northwest all the way to the coasts. In the southeast of Olympia is the Sombersong Wood, a deciduous forest with enormous swamps at its center, where the hidden domains of the Yuan-Ti are.

Olympia was the first-created territory for Finiens, and was going to serve as the centerpoint of the server we never got around to building, and thus is the focal point of many of the stories set in my setting, at least at first. The region is a meritocratic monarchy - ruled by a royal family, but the nobility have little direct sway outside their own personal domains or the capital (also named Olympia); much of the rest of the region, dotted with small farming, fishing, or ranching villages, is highly self-governing and loosely democratic. The other primary city within Olympia is Port Haven - located at the eastern foot of the Titans along the southern coast, Haven rests inside a wide bay that makes it a perfect place for ships, whereas much of the rest of the southern coast is rocky, high-cliffed, and/or reef-laden. Haven is known for its attraction for adventurers, and was even founded by them, a group of six known as the Heroes of Haven, who after completing their travels and adventures settled in the former fishing village and poured their wealth into turning into a prosperous trade city.

Olympia is primarily human, with sizable numbers of elves, halflings, kobolds, and orcs among its citizenry. While nobility and influential people come from all walks of life, the ruling family has been exclusively human save a few half-elves among the mix.

Denvushain: On the opposite side of the Titans from Olympia is the desert kingdom of Denvushain. Much of the region is desert waste punctuated with the occasional oasis, around which cities are usually built; the exceptions would be locations such as Osprey Harbor along the southern coast, and villages and forts built at the feet of the Titans, used as tradeposts and border control with the mountains serving as a buffer between Olympia and Denvushain (usually unnecessary - the two kingdoms are generally on good terms).

Denvushain's population is pretty evenly split between humans, elves (a specific tribal subset known as Painted Elves), and leoni, a race of lion-like catfolk native to the region. Both the leoni and the elves have had kingdoms in the region in ages past - the desert wastes of the deep south were once a leoni kingdom, until some great cataclysm blasted the area, turning the sand into jagged black glass and leaving the city a nameless necropolis filled with horrible undead; the elves' fading was much less dramatic, and simply a slow decline as their culture faded and that of the humans rose to take its place. Kobolds, orcs, and small populations of other races are present; there are also the Sandfolk, or Asherati, who have hidden cities somewhere in the wastes, but seem to make no attempts to exert control over the desert, simply rebuffing or fighting off those who wander too near their settlements, then vanishing when larger forces come to attempt conquest.

Denvushain is ruled by a parliamentary Council of Twelve, which consists of powerful nobles, skilled merchants, tribal chieftains, high priests, and other people serving as representatives of peoples, groups, or collectives. The Council is headed by its thirteenth member and only non-elected representative, the Rajah. While the Rajahs have, for many years, been humans or half-elves, there is expectation that, as has happened in the past, the time of human rulership in the desert will eventually give way to another race's reign. Denvushain is one of the most racially-diverse regions of the setting, and makes an effort to keep members of all cultures within its borders on the Council, providing as much representation to non-human races as possible.

Sadly that's only half done, but lunch is about up so I don't have the time at the moment to post about the Ice Claw or Unknown Kadath, much less moving on to Senkaku, Wachara, Paziou, or Teremvor. Perhaps later =)

Orthos this is some damn good stuff. Do not sell yourself short.

That said we are on opposite sides of the stormwind debate.

Edited for better judgment, this ain't the place for gaming power questions.

Wheeee

That's fair, not looking to start a gaming debate heh, just giving some explanation =P That and trying to head off the inevitable "Why'd you name a continent after a city in WoW?" questions.

I have done nothing productive all day.

No, wait, take it back. I drew a cat.

All over my campaign notes.

Good thing I'm not hoping to start that for some months!

Pretty cool stuff you got there Orthos. Though I should avoid reading it over and over, since my envy / jealousy / insecurity will spring up again.

Then again, I haven't worked on Mystralas at all in a while.

I need my inspiration back just as much as I need my confidence back XD

My word of advice - find someone to work with you as a co-author/co-creator, and get a space where you can bounce ideas off one another. Me being able to do that with Scint and Ebon has gone a long way toward keeping ideas coming, both on the worldbuilding thing here and on my various story projects.

Icy, Orthos, I would appreciate your thoughts on Freehold! The Saga of Wune in my profile. I could use the thoughts, maybe you'll find something inspiring there.

I'm basically making Heterodyne Castle. I justify working this in.

Off lunch now and Kingmaker tonight, but I'll give it a look-see over the weekend =)

Alternatively - catfolk caster. No justification required.

One problem I sadly have with that which makes it a non-option.

I'd feel like it wasn't 100% my work and thus I couldn't take the proper pride nor credit for it.

That can be rough.

Ah. Yeah, I guess not an issue for me since I don't mind sharing the credit.

Best of luck to you, hope you do find something that works for you =)

Well, I guess sharing credit for something like a D&D setting would be okay in a sense.

A whole written story of some sort? Not so much. Then again, I just need to pick up on where I left off.

I was probably beating myself too hard anyway. Hell, it's not like I've even mentioned much of what I have set up, right?

Ouch.

That reminds me of when they wouldn't let our night shift manager move up to days, but they hired this inbred douche who literally knew nothing about the job but was a friend of the 3PL manager. Then the 3PL manager had the stones to make the night shift manager switch to days for weeks at a time to train the douche. Then the night shift guy would get b@#@@ed at for having trouble keeping up with his own work when he wasn't allowed to work his own shift.

Sadly that whole billion dollar + manufacturing facility got decommissioned and turned into a welfare office. It makes me incredibly sad. I spent a couple of years helping to build the fab.

Weeeeeeee! I'm in the money now!

For at least another week...

Hi BP!

Orthos wow that setting looks nice. Although I would need to work on my skill in working in groups. That could be a hindrance to working successfully.
