Naked positive thoughts, eh?

Coffee! Cofee coffee coffee coffee coffee!!!!!!

So, um, yeah, I got done with lab early today and got to go get some coffee which is usually sorely lacking from my Monday mornings. :)

Shiny, sorry to hear about the job woes. :(

I had a pretty good weekend overall. Went to rennfaire and bought a new costume since my old one doesn't work anymore. I cracked a rib a couple of years ago, and it healed weird so trying to lace the corset made me almost pass out. So now I have a cute slave girl outfit instead. And kudos to the girls at the shop who were able to tie that on in such a way that it looks cute and sexy even though I'm not a skinny girl. :)

That sucks, and good luck. Let us know where you end up.

Is this where the sad, pathetic, and possibly somewhat creepy single guys trying to postpone a run through pouring rain are supposed to post "pictures or we won't believe you"?

Cause I'm not gonna. ;)

Edit:
Added extra creepyness to the post in the hope it'd make it even clearer I'm just joking. Or, considering the outfit... should that be "just yanking your chain"? Erm... I suspect I'd better stop there, before that description of me above becomes completely correct.

I think that many/most FAWTLies have moved on to FB. I should have posted this there yesterday, but didn't think about it. So if one of you have access to FB can post this there for me...

I'm looking for a little bit of advice...

Spoiler:
Ok, so after working at the same place for 9 years they laid me off about two months ago. They did ok as far as letting me go -- I got a little over two months severance pay and my saved up vacation pay. But after being there for 9 years, I still feel ties to the place.

I'm not going to say that I ran the place, but I was one of the few people there who really know what was going on and how things worked. A few weeks after I left and three other people have quit. They were hurting before they laid me off and now they are really hurting. No one there now knows anything about the systems so if they need to fix anything, they won't really be able to -- at least not well or right.

I have a new job now -- technically it's "temporary", but it can very easily turn into a permanent position. And they low-balled my pay since it is temporary -- and I'm making more than I was before. Because they realize what I know and what I can do.

To the point...

Like I said, I still feel tied to my previous employer and really would like to see them do well -- whether or not I'm there. I asked the EVP (Executive Vice President) if he'd like to meet for lunch. He agreed. Now that it's about to happen (tomorrow), I'm not sure what I wish to talk about...

So much of me wants to just say -- "See, you were stupid for letting me go...", but that's not very nice. Or helpful.

So...
If you had a chance to tell your previous employer what poor decisions they had made and continue to make, would you? How? What would you avoid talking about? What should my goal be with this meeting? Any other advice you might have?

Spoiler:
Tough call. Today's problem is that employees feel more loyalty to their employers than the employers do to them. Many companies take advantage of that.

Your discussion depends on your goals. Your new job gives (albeit temporary) you the opportunity to talk more freely than you could before. If you would be interested in returning you should let the VP know your willingness/interest but be wary of getting burned again. Be frank on that point. If you're confident in staying on where you are, and are happy with the prospect of getting hired on regulary, keep the meeting social. No hard feelings. Even social/networking luncheons can bear fruit later on.

Any guess as to why the VP is going? Social? Regrets?

E7 -- Can you post my post on the FAWTL FB page?

Spoiler:
RE: Do I know why he is meeting with me?

Honestly, not sure. I may ask him that right up front. He's really a smart guy. Smarter than most administrators I've ever known. He also knows that I'm pretty smart and see a lot. They laid me (and two others) off because they were hurting and thought that this would fix the problem -- it hasn't. Not only hasn't it, but it's worse now there than it has ever been. Maybe it's the eternal optimist in me, but I'm hoping that he's actually willing to listen.

just looking for information. My calcium levels have been elevated for at least a couple of months now. they are still elevated after being on a calcium channel blocker for a month. doc wants me to see an endocrinologist(sp?) I don't know what to be concerned about if anything at all but fear of surgery kinda scares me if it has to go that route.

That's a tough one. I've never been in that situation, and, if I ever had the occasion to talk to my manager from the job I left 15 months ago, I don't think I'd be diplomatic.

I think if he asks you directly, go ahead and tell him your thoughts, but otherwise enjoy the meal. :)

Random thoughts:

Spoiler:

Make it as positive as possible...stick with phrases like "I understand how difficult the decision was for you," and "I hope the company can succeed", etc. Feel out how open they would be to coming to you for help. If they are, then you can make whatever offer you want to make. If they aren't, I would offer email or phone contact as a signal that your door is open to them, and leave it on as positive a note as you can.

Maybe you want to offer them an email address for critical questions, and make it clear you're available.

Or if you are willing to work in your off hours to help them out, let them know that, then name an hourly rate (Realize that this will make you an independent contractor and there could be tax consequences! You would have to pay the full Social Security tax (15%, I think?) rather than just the employee's half, for example - so you'd have to ask for more than you might at first think). Ask a fair rate - this will make sure they only contact you when they really need you!

Be clear on what you are willing to offer before going in. Are you willing to answer questions via phone or email? Are you willing to come in on evenings or weekends or other free time to help them out? Are you willing to write up an "instruction manual" or "FAQ" for their remaining people? State what you are willing to do clearly - and state the limits on what you are willing to do equally clearly.

Good luck!

My mother has hypo-thyroidism (not enough hormones produced), her sister has hyper-thyroidism (too many hormones), and her best friend had hyper-thyroidism, and the doctors took out her thyroid entirely, and she's on synthroid now. I seem to recall mother mentioning that they couldn't do much for hyper-thyroidism - it's harder to remove excess hormone than add additional hormones to a person's system.

All I know is that you can get thyroid replcement - but the synthroid mom is on interferes with her medication that is supposed to calm her essential tremors, so that's frustrating for her.

I know it messes with your metabolism - generally hypo-thyroidism leads to a very slow metabolism, hyper-thyroidism leads to a faster metabolism.

My mother is a nurse, and thus would know more, I"m sure. But that's about the limit of my knowledge.

Been a busy day which is why I have not posted earlier. How is everyone?

Moff: not sure your relationship with the boss sounds like you'd like to see the company succeed. Perhaps the best way to address the situation is ask the boss why they felt they would be better off letting you go? What they were hoping to accomplish. You say he was a good administrator so chances are he had a good reason and a plan. Perhaps ask if the things are working out? Are you hoping to perhaps get your job back? Perhaps if you are come prepared with some suggestions as to how they might fix some of the issues they are having? Show your value?

Spoiler:
Technically, he wasn't my boss. He was/is my boss's boss. The EVP is in charge of all operations in the credit union.

I'm still not sure if I want my job back. If I were to come back - in any capacity - some serious changes would need to be made. (Including the removal of two people who are dragging the company down.)

Moff - Employers rarely realize what they have until it's gone. It will be interesting, at any rate, to see what he has to say.

My partner is suddenly getting a lot of attention on his photography (not a lot of money, but exposure is good). I wish I could say the same about my job search.

Easy, if I may chime in even though it's not addressed to me - I love the very active Pathfinder community in Houston. There are at least 3 fairly regular FAWTL members in the Houston area plus a few up the road in Dallas I need to meet some time.
