On the one hand it's always nice to finish a big project, on the other hand, every time I do I have to spend two days going back and fixing something coworker or Other Captain f%*& up.
But I suppose that's one of the reasons I keep getting raises (my pay rate is nearly double what it was when I started 3 years ago as coworker's imaginary buddy).

Can someone come punch this guy for me? He looked at the-admittedly small-breakfast, asked me "Is there going to be a breakfast today?", and when I told him that was all we had, he said "That's it? What a rip-off!" He then continued saying it was a rip-off as he took food. I know it's not what he may have wanted, but a rip-off? IT'S FREE! How is that a rip-off? Especially since the reduced breakfast is part of the reason our rates are about 30% lower than they were pre COVID. So how is it a rip-off?

OK. This is utter hilarity.
If I do away with the rest of my family and then sell my property in California, this place is within reach. The two California one-family homes combine to be worth a bit more than that place.
So, other than the fact that actually maintaining the place would probably run around $7000/month and bankrupt me, sounds like a plan! (Oh, and murdering the rest of my family for their inheritance would probably be frowned upon as well, I suppose...)
(Shiro is shopping for me and being silly.)
You may not need to resort to murder. Places in your area are going for upwards of double the asking price.

I want to agree with you, but I've been there before. Coming off of a road trip, setting up for a con and not being able to get dinner because we aren't in NY anymore and places close at 8 PM and the hotel has just yogurt and fruit for breakfast...it sucks. He should not have yelled at you though. That's not going to full his belly.

We had yogurt, cereal, granola bars, bagels, two kinds of muffins, pop tarts (3 or 4 flavors), and two types of Jimmy Dean microwaveable breakfast sandwiches.

Well, it's a rural British mansion, so let's make a suitable compromise... Half of them. Preferably the more distant one, so then we can have a sequel where Imps try to murder each other over inheritance after you.
I know that Impus Major seems like a clear favorite, but I have a high hope for Impus Minor going for the archetypical "no one expected the shy one" trope.

Merah had a bad turn at the vet today. She was there to get a tooth removed and the others cleaned. But near the end of the procedure she stopped breathing. They got her breathing again on her own, but it was quite unexpected. She is doing well now, but they are keeping her overnight. Hopefully she can come home tomorrow.

Speaking of poor IT, I love Wunderground because it allows local weather geeks to connect their internet-enabled weather stations to the network. There was a station barely a block and a half from where I lived.
I say "was" because I wanted to check Anaheim weather for next week's Disneyland trip, so I hit my bookmark and Wunderground reported that it was 86°F at my house. No it's not! I checked my usually-quite-accurate thermometer and it reads 78°F. Then I noticed -- Wunderground was reporting weather for me at the Oakland Airport!
Sure enough, my weather station was gone, and instead of providing me with a nice, "That station is no longer functional, please choose a different one," message (which would have been NICE and is technically easier to set up than a redirect), I got redirected to an airport more than 10 miles away whose weather has little to do with mine.
There was a nice local article about Bay Area weather just a couple of days ago -- one street in San Francisco reported a temperature of 68°F. Going just 2.5 miles south away from the Golden Gate, the temperature was 99°F. We usually have temperature differentials of 15-20 degrees within a 10-mile ratius, and 30 degrees isn't THAT uncommon. So flipping me to a station that far away guaranteed bad readings.

Speaking of poor IT decisions:
"We are providing in writing for the 27th month in a row that we recommend < insert basic security protocols here > due to your ongoing security issues you've been actively experiencing."
Client:
"Yeah, you're right, we know we should...but we just don't want to. It'll confuse our employees too much."

Oh, yeah, in spite of years of research indicating that mandatory password changes actually reduce security, even Global Megacorporation still makes me change my various passwords every 90 days.
In terms of password changes, the TL;DR version is:
(1) Competent miscreants don't buy databases of old passwords. They use spear phishing to compromise a system and move in immediately. Password change policies do nothing to stop this.
(2) If end users have to change their passwords all the time, they'll intentionally use weaker, easier-to-remember passwords because they have to change them so often.
The *only* time you should change your password is if you get notified that the server got compromised. Not once every 90 days for security theater.

We're not talking about passwords in this case. They have critical systems that are internet facing...with little or no security. We want them to implement two factor authentication for that stuff.
On the one hand, I hate TFA because I never have my phone near me.
On the other hand, I love it because it's so much harder to spoof.
Global Megacorporation does it remarkably well. "Oh, you're not on VPN and that's a new browser instance? New TFA challenge. Nope. Doesn't matter that you were signed in 30 seconds ago on that exact same computer. You closed Chrome, you've got to re-authenticate."
Sensible stuff like that I might find a PITA, but at least it really *is* a significant uptick in security without wasting my time changing passwords.

I'm pretty tired, I spent all day (and will probably spend all day tomorrow) fixing stuff coworker f%!~ed up for no other reason then "I don't want to spend time making sure everything is correct".
Which is kind of annoying but just reinforces the conclusion I came to years ago, if you take the extra time to make sure everything is perfect as you're building it you don't have to come back later and fix it. Unfortunately, with a small window for building in between winters no one in Wisconsin wants to take the extra time.

Thank you.
They dont know if it was an allergic reaction, or heart trouble. Both are an option. Merah and Mephisto were rescued, nearly starved to death, and had muscle atrophy and kidney damage. So it might be damage to the heart as well. And you can never know what damage they had already sustained from bad breeding.Luckily she recovered well, and they are just keeping her overnight as a precaution (as drugged cats can easily overexert themselves).
We have a call with the vet tomorrow and hopefully she can come back home then.

I'm so tired of password changes. We moved to Workday this year for all employees. Their login system is so obtuse, the automated password reset fails to work half the time, while none of the hourly team members have any reason to use it beyond payslips.
Until there is mandatory training hosted on Workday.
We reset passwords 3300 times last month and are on track to have a higher number this month. Some of them hadn't changed their password since launch. And the admin tool we've been provided counts any temporary password we use as one of the past passwords for restricted use. So when they call back after the first reset, we have to use a different temporary. Then we have the same problem three months later when it expires.

I find the ads for SimpliSafe that show up on Firefox utterly terrifying. "30 minutes is all it takes to make your family safe... protect your family with 24/7 professional monitoring..."
Or my personal favorite, "See what your teenage daughter is doing when you're not at home..."
So... let me get this straight...
The *only* time I am fully relaxed is when my family is at home, because I consider it a safe environment where they are at virtually zero risk.
And now you want me to let STRANGERS MONITOR THEM THERE 24/7?!?!?!?!?
It disturbs me because it relies on so many factors that I consider so negative.
(1) Your home is not safe, and you need someone else to protect you. (Submissive and fear-mongering.)
(2) You cannot trust your children. (Divisive and fear-mongering.)
(3) Our professionals will monitor you 24/7 and never misuse this information. (Complete trust in authority.)

Okay, anyone want to beat up someone else for me? One of my nieces is working on her PhD in Neuroscience, planning to be a researcher. One of her grandmothers on her mother's side is bullying her. Saying things like "Your only getting a PhD? You need to get an MD too. You're not a real doctor without an MD." When my niece said she doesn't want an MD since she wants to be a researcher, not a physician, the grandmother responded "Whatever. You really need to give up all of that and start having babies. You're not getting any younger."
I never liked that woman, and this just makes me angrier.

I spent yesterday cleaning all the gutters on my mother's house (which completely filled the brush bin; I don't think she had done it in at least a decade) and then pressure-washing the front and east side. This morning I'm pressure-washing the back and the west side, and then we start painting the exterior.
The realtor is sending photographers on Saturday at eleven, and the listing goes live on Monday.
Meanwhile, the second offer that Mom and Eve made on a house in Maine was accepted. It's already got stalls and a paddock so they can keep the horses at their house instead of boarding them somewhere else like they do now. And it's got a chicken coop and room for a few goats. And it's a half an hour from the beach.
But, holy heck, we've got a lot of work to do this weekend. I thought it was a big job moving from California to Texas, but Oregon to Maine with a toddler and three horses is worse.
(Hashtag how I spent my summer vacation.)

It really is appalling how your feelings and beliefs, no matter how strong, are readily thrown out around celebrations such as your birthday or the holidays because you somehow have to "suck it up and deal with it."
Apparently, being "celebrated" means you are required to be "abused".
Yep. My mother-in-law is at it again. I have told her explicitly that I do not want to receive gifts. EVER. I have told her explicitly that I no longer drink alcohol, and never will. Yesterday I got the inevitable email from her that she wants to stop by today to "drop off my gifts". I guarantee at least one such "gift" will be a bottle of wine.
I started to write back to inform her that she would do no such thing, but GothBard absolutely insists that I keep my mouth shut for her sake.
And I have to ask, "What about my sake? Do my feelings on my birthday matter for anything at all, or do you all just treat me in ways that I have repeatedly indicated that I hate, because you care so little for me and so much for "tradition" that my emotional well-being means nothing to you?"
Is it any wonder that every year on my birthday I try to hop in the Celica and drive away at 5:00 am, not returning until after 11:00 pm?
[/birthday tirade]
EDIT: People call me a whiner and say, "Just suck it up and accept the gifts graciously. You can throw them out later." But it's the principle: I very clearly indicate that I strongly dislike X. My friends and relatives assume I'm joking or not very serious, and no one could really not like X, and force it on me anyway. I consider it akin to someone saying, "I don't like chocolate," and all their friends and family giving them chocolate for every single birthday because, "No one doesn't like chocolate."
It's such tone-deaf disregard for the person's feelings that you start to wonder whether said friends and family members actually care about them at all, or whether it's the rituals and gestures they love.
