Ticket Description: "We have two girls that are going to be coming on to help Ops Support so need two new computers set up in the Ops Support area for these two girls."

My first response: "When are they starting?"

Simultaneous response from Lead and Manager, paraphrased: They already started.

So...when you said "that are going to be coming on", you really were hoping I could time travel?

I bet he'd get tip-top marks were he to video record his contribution sitting in a big truck, wearing 'tactical shades' and a baseball cap.

Hey, Tac!

I'm . . . I'm okay. Been a crazy handful of months.

All The Things:
1) My niece was born Remember, remember the Fifth of November!

2) The gf made herself the ex-gf two days before Thanksgiving.

3) My grandfather died 27 December at the ripe age of 94. Four days off work.

4) Mid-January, one of the gaming crew texted that he had just tested Covid-positive -- the day *after* a 7+-hour game session where zero Covid protocols were observed. So I was quarantined for 12 days. I was a bit nervous about it, at first, since respiratory ailments hit me hard and fast, but no symptoms. Finally made it back to work.

5) The Frostpocalypse of 2021 was pretty chaotic, but I handled it better than most, until . . .

6) . . . last Friday night, when I slipped and fell on a stubborn and well-concealed patch of black ice and hurt my right knee. I tried to walk it off and work my shift, but had to go home halfway through. The 8-minute walk to my car took 40. Drove an hour and a half home after limping my way through fueling up the car. Monday, my doc drew 100ccs of fluid off my knee, and observed that it contained an alarming amount of blood. Referred to an orthopedist the following day. Now I'm waiting for an MRI (next Thursday, tentatively), sitting at the house wearing a full knee brace and taking more steroids than I ever have before.

I'm hungry.

Hugs and prayer, my dude.

And black ice is rougher than those who haven't dealt with it know!

One of the reasons I wear 25 pounds of layers in the winter is because of ice.

That said, I've seriously injured a knee falling on ice and it sucks!

I've been purging my old hard drives, and I set aside four or five old SCSI drives, hoping I could find an adapter for them so I could retrieve any data on them.

The adapters I found ran around $175. Yeah, my data wasn't *that* valuable...

I swear, Shiro gets uppity about the oddest things.

He signed on to Red Dead Online before GothBard and I got there and someone just ran up and shot him. For the next 20-25 minutes, he and the attacker engaged in a ridiculous battle of wills and skill (at one point Shiro head shot him while he was falling off a cliff), with the end result being Shiro 33 kills, the attacker 20 kills, and the attacker finally giving up and quitting the server.

I simply don't have the patience to spend that much time engaging with jerks, whether or not I eventually "win" by making them leave.

EDIT: He admits, he enjoys it. Which I wouldn't.

No joke, in college a guy wanted to name his Marvel character Black Ice. He had rolled Darkforce Manipulation and Energy Missile Weapon: Cold, so he basically said his PC pulled a sort of cold energy from the depths of the Dark Dimension and shot it, Iceman style from his hands... making sheets of black ice.

For Key & Peele like reasons, he was asked to change it on the final character.

Are you just using the Core Rulebook or do you have the Advanced Player's Guide yet?

If not I highly highly recommend it to maximize your Pathfinder 2 experience.

Also, the Ancestry Guide and the Lost Omens Characters Guide are both the beezneez.

Personally I reached Ranger fatigue years ago (my brothers will play as wizards, Aragorn rangers or paladins and nothing else) so I haven't even tried making one but the General has one with an animal companion for Extinction Curse that promises to be fun.

We'll be playing Abomination Vaults soon, so far we have an Elven Swashbuckler, Tiefling Witch, and Cactus Leshy alchemist or investigator with Tiny T-Rex still undecided on his character (which I will help him with tomorrow).

I'm using the Pathbuilder 2E app, free but fully updated. I'm not sure that I've managed to "drive" it properly. All the options seem so . . . generic. Somewhat like 4E. Anyhow. I'm sure there are other places on the boards for exactly this discussion. Moving on.

2e isn't too bad mechanically, but it had some weird rules, like certain races couldn't play certain classes. A lot of people make fun of THAC0, but it's just...like reverse AC. There's a few good retro clone RPs that utilize it. It's not as crunchy as 3e or PF, but it's pretty up there IIRC.

Oh, wait. You mean 2e PF.

I really like PF2. The three action system makes combat a lot more interesting all of a sudden. I'm not too thrilled with what they did with skills.

I believe I've told this story before, but once upon a time (probably 2000 or 2001) I was at a Best Buy and saw some hard drives on the shelf. One row of them had a hand-written sign on it (I guess they couldn't find the labels for the shelf?) stating that they were "scuzzy hard drives". I don't know if anyone would buy those.

Syrus and PF2:
Thus far, PF2 is . . . well, as a system, it's a shambles. Every good thing about it is undermined (thoroughly so!) by some element(s) of implementation.

Let me rephrase that.

The whole system is based on good ideas! Which then get turned into bad things because of how convoluted the mechanics are (and don't get me started on the "Cthulhu's Best Wormhole Acid Trip" rulebook layout).

1) The 3-action Round: Pure simplification of one of the biggest hurdles of 3.5/PF1 action economy. An excellent move. It makes sense that modifying spells on the fly would take a little more time to cast. It makes sense that even a pre-adolescent field hand could strike a wild dog with his pitchfork more than once in 6 seconds. Good idea!!

Which is then almost wholly undone by how many "action tags" (??) you need to remember, and parse, and coordinate in order to do the things your character can do. Concentrate on your Flourish so you can Press the Metamagic advantages at the Open of the round.

And then you need to reference the index at the back of the book to make sure you have all the gears and cogs of the action tags properly implemented.

Ugh.

2) Bbn=Ftr=Rgr=Self-inflicted GSW: Perhaps this really only applies to the martial classes, but . . . . Only the fighter gets Attack of Opportunity. But the ranger can kinda-sorta get it, slower. . . . . The ranger can be a dual-wielder. But the fighter does that, too, and with at least the same amount of competence. . . . . The rogue gets precision damage. But the ranger does that, too. Just weakly. . . . .

Same actions with the same effects and the same results and the same costs just different names and different levels? There's nothing innovative or special there. Whoop-de-do-dah.

3) Ancestral Lives Matter: Bringing bloodline/species/race/ancestry (however you PC kiddos say it today) to a slightly greater prominence throughout a character's career is a good idea! But the rate of return on ancestry feats has been quite underwhelming. Why pick a feat you never know will have any utility or narrative impact? Furthermore, why be required to pick such a feat??

4) Wut Duh Akkshul Ph_k.: Okay. So you have class DC. And class proficiency bonuses for beating DCs. A Reflex save bonus . . . but also a Reflex DC? Your Acrobatics bonus is a thing; yet you also have a DC for the same skill.

How much ink and page space would have been saved if they had simply said: "Everybody make opposed rolls!"

They essentially took the defense scores of D&D 4E and broke them down into twoscore *more* things to calculate, remember, and reference on a turn-by-turn basis (at least if your group has the tryhards for not advertising the newest packaging of Murderhobo Spam). And what good has it done? From firsthand experience: slowing down the game.

I know, I know! It's just the modifier and knowing when you get to "take 10", but . . . Couldn't you just use Fortitude, Reflex, and Will? Or at worst scatter it into six ability defenses like 5E did? (No, that's not a comment in favor of 5E.)

5) How do you Craft anything around here?: No. Seriously.

----------

I'm losing what little focus I can muster for this discussion. Rambledrive engaged.

It feels like PF2 enables characters that "do their thing" well, but that's the only thing they *can* do. At least with a minimal degree of effectiveness. (If I don't spam Hunt Prey and Twin Takedown, the party is losing. We're slightly less likely to lose when I *do* spam HPTT.)

They simplified action economy only to restrict it hideously by stacking sixty filters on top of a player being able to exercise agency on a turn. The qualifiers of what makes an action a particular kind of action are more important than actually producing results.

4th did it better. It let you choose what you could do, and then it told you when you could do it. And *then* it told you when you could do that thing more easily. Not the other way around. "Hey! That's cool!" . . . "Oh, okay. Hoop to jump through." . . . "Wait a minute." . . . "So only at the *end* of a turn, when I'm already rolling with penalties, and it won't let me apply this other bonus when I do it?! . . . What is this even for??!"

And Holy Berjabbers, Batfans. Four degrees of action resolution that call for more math-on-the-fly whilst cross-checking the rules text to be sure . . . . 1s and 20s, people. Easy. Saving throws don't have to be complicated.

Okay. I gotta stop that.

Pathfinder 2 takes all of its own elegant potential for effective, engaging gameplay and crams it through a series of unnecessary, overcomplicated, blandifying meta filters to land on your tabletop as a chaotic, disorganized brainchild that is, in my experience, more likely to inhibit fluid gameplay and narrative than to augment it.

The redeeming factor for me has nothing to do with the system or its limited bells and whistles: I've got a good gaming crew.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I believe they fixed the Rangers not getting attacks of opportunity in the Advanced Player's Guide.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I would actually tell people not to play Pathfinder 2 unless they also have the Advanced Player's Guide.

But I do that with Pathfinder Classic too.

I personally think they either need to separate the GMG and Player's Handbook like D&D or just make the CRB 900 pages.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

There are two reasons why I haven't looked into PF2e:
1) I have no major problems with 1e. Of course it isn't perfect, but it works well enough for me.
2) None of the people I game with want to try it out (for various reasons, some of which I think are ridiculous, but whatever).

I haven't looked into Starfinder mainly because the people I game with (and myself) aren't interested in a sci-fi game right now. Although a couple of them have bought the new Cyberpunk rulebook, but as far as I know they haven't looked to run it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I like Starfinder, and I'd probably like PF2, but nobody I know plays it, and I'm not intrigued enough by it to want to try and run it myself.

I love Starfinder, it's my favorite system.

Cyberpunk Red is definitely something you have to read and look through for awhile before you run it, there's a lot there. I like it though, definitely looks like fun.
