Today isn't going well, and I've only been on duty for about an hour.

My immediate boss has decided this is a perfect time to take PTO. Nevermind that he's never replaced my counterpart for the other side of the business, so I've been filling that gap. Nevermind that my primary tech under me is out on paternity leave, so I've been filling in for him as well. He told me around 4pm on Friday afternoon that he was going to take this week off.

Yes. The one in college.

Is there a version of 'Frozen' set in college that exists outside of Freehold's dreams?

OMG, this is Global Megacorporation in a nutshell:

Our division's entire focus for the last 6 months has been on a complete redesign of the user interface. We've been advertising it. We've been showing it at all our presentations and conferences. We've talked about what a HUGE deal it is. My department set aside an extra month to implement the massive changes required...

...and this morning we got our development image, and the new UI isn't there...

...and I asked my manager about it, and she said, "Yeah, the demo team decided they weren't going to do it..."

So yep. You can just go ahead and ignore corporate mandates if you feel like it.

I am now REALLY not looking forward to external review, when a dozen reviewers ask me why I'm not using the mandated new interface.

I see a bus that needs something thrown under it. Clearly that bus is out of control and only that particular team...err...object...can safely bring it to a halt from underneath the front wheels.

I feel a possible life milestone incoming...my father is unhappy where he's living, has been for years, and has floated the idea of moving out to AZ to live with us. Which I've been expecting for a while and would like to do...but where to start? With me losing my job at the end of this coming March and not knowing where I might find another one or whether that will trigger another move, well I told him we'll have to see how the next couple of months shake out.

I'm not even sure how comfortable he is driving cross country, he hasn't had a car in years, so I'm not sure how he'd get himself out here. Maybe just buying him a plane ticket would be best. He'd have to give up a lot of his stuff, but he's a packrat so that'd probably be for the best anyway...blerg, so much to consider!

So, I'm a man who was raised in the 70s. "If it doesn't fit in your pocket, you don't need to be carrying it."

My iPhone 4S is at the high end of the scale: It fits into all of my pockets (both shirt and pants), but it's big enough that it's very noticeable in my pants pocket.

Impus Major just got a new Motorola Android phone. It's a really nice phone with 528 GB of memory (including the 512 GB SIM card we threw in). But I just measured it and it's 33% longer and 25% wider than my iPhone. I don't have a pocket on any of my pants that this phone would comfortably fit into, with the possible exceptions of a couple of pairs of slacks, some cargo pants, and some hiking pants.

So... what good is a "phone" that you can't carry in your pocket?

And THAT is why I will forever remain behind the times...

There is a (not so new) meme about the evolution of mobile phones - at start they were getting smaller and smaller, until it occurred to someone that you can watch adult movies on them and then their sizes started to grow.

A Motorola G7 Power. I'm envious of the battery life, a non-Apple OS, and the massive storage space, but considering I typically don't carry around my 4S all that often because it's too big to be comfortable, the Motorola just seems like a boat.

On the other hand, that battery life...

Disclaimer: When I go on my walks I tend to carry my Prius key and my house key. And that's it. And my "wallet" is a credit card, my driver's license, and my two insurance cards (medical and auto). I'm quite the minimalist when it comes to carrying stuff around.

I can at least say that living with my brother after being out of the house almost 20 years is nice. The fact that he does good crafts with hanging doors and other projects helps, on top of the new house having lots of room to prevent us from stepping on each other, figuratively.

I may have to force the issue with my mother someday, but maybe not. She loves her home in upstate NY, has tons of friends nearby, and wants to be there for years and years.

All I know with my mother is I'm sworn to never ever put her in a nursing home.

Interesting, I was not aware of this stereotype.

Since my father gave me my first one as a teen, I've been carrying a thick wallet on me at all times, as well as my iPhone in the other pocket once that became a thing. Plus my car key and a nail clipper -- because I will tear my fingers bloody if I discover a hangnail without it.

I also always have a backpack on or near me, but that's to carry emergency carbs and other convenient odds and ends.

I don't think it'll be a roommate situation with my dad, but yeah, I don't expect it to be frictionless either. He and Mrs Sunrise like each other, but even so I'm hoping we can get a mother-daughter housing situation so that he has a separate space.

That time was,... interesting.

One of them is a relative you LIKE. ;P

So yep, after a year mom and I agreed that it was time to find a new place. About the time I got a job offer in Florida.
Not too bad a job, but living there is REDICULOUSly expensive, so when I got the job offer back in Louisiana we moved back here. :P

Nowadays we visit the family for a week at a time (or so) maybe twice a year, (Christmas, and summer) and we all have a great time. But by the time we leave to go home, I think we ALL agree it's time to go! :)

Aaaah... I'm sure CY appreciates the joys of driving an amazingly crappy car. I was driving GothBard home and taking a left at a four-way Stop. There was traffic, so we weren't even doing California stops; we were all coming to complete stops like good little Lawful citizens.

As I was going into my left turn, a car coming in the opposite direction and signaling right was clearly, obviously, not even going to slow down for the Stop sign. They were going to run it in front of me, force me to stop in the middle of the intersection, and save themselves a precious few seconds.

So I did what anyone in an ancient crappy car would do. I accelerated and cut them off, preventing them from running the Stop sign. And oh, goodness! They leaned on the horn. They sped up right to my bumper and flashed their high beams. They were pissed.

It made me happy.

Saw it with a woman I was dating (and am no longer dating), then I saw it with Aiymi, and then I saw it again last week with Zelda.

I've wanted to see Knives Out since it got recommended to me several time by several different folks - I'm glad to see it's holding up well among viewer reviews!

Frozen 2 is a really good film. I honestly prefer it to the original, even though the original had fewer plot holes (this one has better character development for more people, even if some people just kind of get dropped for a while... stupid run times and stupid "split the party" plots always taking up gaming movie time and leaving some players characters out of the spotlight!) and I like the music better (though I didn't think I would when watching it for the first time). It has flaws, but the flaws don't detract from an enjoyable watching experience, and

Big Spoiler!:
Ana's song at the end

was exceptionally moving and, I think, important - beyond the context of the film, and in several different ways, I really think it's an excellent song for kids to be exposed to (but I'm biased toward pro-morality pieces, especially if they're not heavy-handed or preachy).

Objection! And possible answer!:

I know the song is more about mental health than morality, at least in one sense, but I find that it (critically) works for both. The entire premise that even when she doesn't feel like it - even when she's gripped with depression had has no emotional motivation to carry on, she still does the "next right thing" in an effort to get through it and continue forward.

My posit is that the message of "do the next right thing" is always relevant, and the context of fear/weakness/failure/impossibility v. courage/endurance/persistence/faith - among other possible parallels and allusions - is not only fundamental to fighting through sorrow and depression, but to morality in general. Anyway, I love it.

And, yes, I'm aware it's not a song you'll be playing endlessly.

I absolutely enjoyed the daylights out of Rise of Skywalker and while I was annoyed with their handling of Rose (they simply cannot get her character right! She's so awesome, but they always handle her poorly!), they did pretty much everything else extremely well. It was a bit rushed, but that's mostly due to TLJ being glacial.

Or, as she puts it, "The only reason that Frozen exists is to prepare you for Frozen 2".

Yes. ALL of them.
Some more than others, and certainly some parts more than others, but I just like the movies, and enjoy them for the fantasy that they are.

Sounds like a wonderful date...

Tala's bro, meanwhile, is so f*+$ing entitled and privelaged, he pitched a fit when I changed the WiFi password after his last time of leaving my living room a mess.

As if he DESERVES internet, despite being 100 behind on rent (he only pays 200) and constantly lying to us.

He tried to guilt trip us saying his kif was crying saying we didn't love him cause we cut the internet off.

I was standing outside the door when he texted Tala that. The kid was laughing and trying to get his dad to play.

Poor baby has to actually be a father instead of sticking a tablet in his son's hand and smoking weed and watching TV.

I should note the library, which has free WiFi, is less than 500 steps from our house. I counted when I took a walk yesterday. I am that petty. He hasn't bothered to make the walk, but has instead constantly tried to guilt trip Tala, cause he doesn't have the balls to talk to me and the humility to admit he is wrong, and he knows I won't break.

But I put a notice on the fridge last night that he is out by Feb 1, whether his dad gets a house or not, and if he gives me ANY attitude it will be the same day. Trust me, he won't even START looking or trying to save if I didn't. He knew he was leaving his ex's place for 6 months and came here with NO savings, just expecting family to float him.

He has not spoken to me since. It's been so nice. The house is quiet again. The silent treatment isn't a punishment; it's a reward!

The problem with being nice to someone is they don't believe you CAN put your foot down and be stern until they push your buttons so much you have to, and then suddenly you're the a!~&%&& and they forget the months of generosity they already had!

Yep. That is life in a nutshell.

As those who've met me can attest, I am an overly-nice person to the point of friends and family becoming frustrated with me for taking so much **** from other people.

Yet when I finally decide to stand up for myself, it's always MY fault and I'm a terrible person. Not to throw WW under the bus yet again (but yeah, OK, I'm doing it anyway), but when I finally put my foot down and forced him to start playing by the exact same rules as everyone else in the game, he started a passive-aggressive campaign of constant whining to let me know just how unhappy he was with me. "Well, I'd like to do that, but since NobodysHome cares so much about the rules, I guess we all have to follow the rules even if it's not as fun. So we can't roleplay, we have to follow the rules."

It was... appalling, but he certainly wasn't alone in it:
"Hey, can I borrow $20?"
"OK."
(Time passes)
"Hey, can I borrow $20?"
"No."
"What?!?!? Why not?"
"Because you never paid me back for the last time you borrowed money from me."
"Gods, you're a jerk! It's not like you can't afford it! And don't you trust me? I swear I'll pay you back this time."

And on and on and on.

And I am now officially a "smug Linux user". GothBard and Shiro are sick to death of listening to me crow about how *my* system suddenly works perfectly, runs amazingly fast, keeps all my settings intact, and never crashes.

We were playing Borderlands 3 last night and Lara Croft guy's game crashed out, so he filled out the requested bug report. All I said was, "Yeah, if it crashes on me, my bug report will consist of, 'I'm playing on Linux.' 'Shut up, you.'"

And both GothBard and Shiro said, "Shut up, Smug Linux Guy!"

Does Borderlands 3 works on Linux by itself or have you made it run yourself?

It's the usual Linux story:

(1) Install Lutris
(2) Use Lutris to install Borderlands 3
(3) Perform a bunch of additional fixes provided by a friendly Slavic guy in a YouTube video linked on the "Issues" page of the Lutris installer
(4) Pray

So, in spite of all the posts that "this YouTube fix worked, but xxx still doesn't work in-game", so far I've played BL3 two nights in a row, so maybe 6 hours total, and haven't had more than "cosmetic" glitches:

(1) The MP4 movies (the reason for the YouTube fix) take roughly 10 seconds for the video to kick in, so you get a black screen with audio only, sit there thinking, "Oh, crap. Is this the point at which it crashes?", and then the video kicks in and you relax
(2) First-time zone transitions take about twice as long as people on Windows machines. Lara Croft guy has the worst network connection and weakest machine in the group, and I came in about the same time he did, which was a LONG wait. Once you've transitioned to a place once and it's been generated, transitions are just as fast as on Windows.

ugh, linux users!

There is an old in joke with my friends about Linux being a cow and a field of wheat, with the computer/operating system being a full bowl of processed cereal.

I dont remember all the parts, but my god it was hilarious.
