...lots of things, plus...And I gotta say, as someone who was pushed HARD toward the so called "Academic Track" and away from the "practical arts" track... I desperately wish the well meaning a~~%@#$s who did that, hadn't, including my parents...
I think that right there is one of the greatest failings of both the "Greatest Generation" (mine) and "Baby Boomers" (yours) as parents: The idea that children must not only be encouraged to pursue lucrative careers, but out-and-out forbidden to pursue anything else.
One of my childhood best friend's mothers was an opera trainer. She worked with many of us when we were rehearsing for our elementary school musicals. And she admitted that my voice amazed her: I had excellent pitch, a 3-octave voice, and with a bit of training I would be a fantastic singer.
So my father took it upon himself to quash any such dreams. In a fricking 8-year-old kid. He told me my singing was terrible and I couldn't carry a tune. He forbade me from singing in the house. If I tried to practice for the musical anywhere on our property he'd come storming out and yell at me that my horrific singing was ruining his concentration and preventing him from working, so I'd better shut up. He was verbally abusive to the point that in 5th grade I pretended to have a 2-week sick-out rather than try to perform in the play. And once my voice changed, with no practice and no training, I lost my ability to sing on key, but I still have a good ear so I know I'm singing off-key, which is the worst.
So... what's the likelihood that I would have pursued a singing career? Virtually 0. I considered it a fun pastime, not something I wanted to do all the time.
But what is the lasting damage and resentment towards my father? Deep and incurable.
Nice job, Dad!
But seriously, it's water under the bridge, and more of an example of, "How NOT to Parent" than anything else. Let your kids do what they enjoy and what they're passionate about. 95% of the time, that's all they'll need to be successful in whatever they do.

On far more trivial First World Problems, it really drives me nuts when people park poorly on a street that already has limited parking.
I was moving the Prius for garbage day, and two cars in a row were parked at that, "If you pull up 6" behind my bumper you'll be sticking 9" into the driveway behind you," position that is oh-so-aggravating. So 2 subcompacts taking up 4 spaces on garbage day.
Nice, guys...
On far more trivial First World Problems, it really drives me nuts when people park poorly on a street that already has limited parking.
I was moving the Prius for garbage day, and two cars in a row were parked at that, "If you pull up 6" behind my bumper you'll be sticking 9" into the driveway behind you," position that is oh-so-aggravating. So 2 subcompacts taking up 4 spaces on garbage day.

I learned fairly early on (about the same age Crookshanks is) that a classroom environment wasn't a place I could thrive, so college was never really an option for me.

It was at the Brudenell, in the new room on the side.I take it, it wasn't at the Brudenell Social Club?ALL (DE) and I went to see the brother's band in Leeds. It was great.
We had pies beforehand; ALL (DE)'s pie was called 'Heidi', which raises all sorts of uncomfortable questions in my mind.
Your brother was the opening act for Nordic Giants?! The dude playing the awesome guitar? I was there that was a really cool performance.

I do have local friends who can help me, :) but at the moment, it was mainly I couldn't be bothered to think about dealing with it, plus I am notorious at option paralysis. If they had handed me an AC unit and said "do this one" I'd probably would have been fine, but no I needed to look them up and read reviews....
That said if you ever are in the area, let me know (for brunch, not for heavy lifting).

You can always tell when jerks from the county are in town to see the show because there's three feet of space between each car and the cars are two feet from the curb.

I think you were on leave when I tiraded about living at my parents' house for a few years, and every Friday there'd be a quinceanera and dozens of drunken uncles in pickups, some of whom would inevitably back their massive pickups across the street, broadside my Celica, and then screech off. I got hit-and-run half a dozen times in 5 years, and even filed formal complaints with the city about them.
And the most frustrating thing of all was that the building was used for all kinds of events: Weddings, anniversaries, VFW meetings, proms, bat mitzvahs, etc. And no one ever hit my car except at quinceaneras. It's like, "PLEASE stop living the stereotype, guys!"
(And yes, many of the weddings were also people of Hispanic descent, yet somehow getting drunk at weddings wasn't nearly as prevalent as getting drunk at quinceaneras. Go figure.)

Aiymi's MRI is finally approved and scheduled for later this afternoon. Hopefully it shows what's going on with her knee and is a fixable situation.
So...it's been a week.
We were supposed to hear back by Thursday.
We haven't.
She called on Friday and was told the results weren't ready, but should certainly have them on Monday.
She called today and was told "We're sorry, the nurse says that she's just too busy to call you. She says she'll call you tomorrow."
After I get out of work, I'm showing up. We went through the authorization forms, so they can't hide behind HIPAA. I am going to ask nicely. Once. If they fail to provide the results then I am going to summon hellfire (non-violently).

I loved astronomy when I was a kid, but due to extremely poor eyesight, I have never even seen the moons of Jupiter. So now I pay attention to astronomical events and try to take the kids. Tonight is the Perseids meteor shower.
And of course we now have a "Spare the Air" warning with excessively hazy air all around the Bay Area all week.
But they say we should still be able to see 20-30 meteors an hour, and since I've been able to see them every year I've checked even with my terrible eyes, I figure the kids'll be able to see them.
Should be fun...
EDIT: And yes, Freehold, here's a heat wave in Albany in August.

I have 6 ongoing prescriptions for conditions ranging from high cholesterol to allergies to asthma. In July, while we were out of town, Anthem Blue Cross cheerfully informed us that they were switching mail order pharmacies from Express Scripts to IngenioRx. We would be undergoing a "seamless" transition.
As I think I mentioned previously, of my 6 prescriptions, only the one I almost never take (allergy) made it. The other 5 were blocked. I messaged IngenioRx. "Just have your doctor fax in new prescription forms for the other 5."
Done. Nothing happened.
I called IngenioRx. "Oh, I'll fax your doctor and get the other 5 right away. I don't know why there's a problem... OK. All taken care of!"
2 additional prescriptions arrived, meaning after two weeks of effort they had managed to "seamlessly" transition HALF of my prescriptions.
It's a darned good thing none of these are life-saving drugs and it's not allergy season around here. I suspect I'm not going to see the other 3 prescriptions until September.
But we have the best health care in the world, right?

I will say, the idea has merit, but in math, programming, and language, there is abso-daggum-lutely a tendency toward errors based off of simple mistakes leading to large scale communication issues (and sometimes making these communication issues systemic: see, also, ModernPolitics(tm), forums, etc.) and the idea that anything can just “figure it out” without some level of clarity is... well, I’ll believe it when I see it consistently.
Then again, I’m strongly of the opinion that the “Daemon Sultan at the center of the universe” was probably just a big ol’ poorly-programmed Matrioshka brain and the “monotonous piping’s” just the control protocol satellites working to make sure it doesn’t “wake up” and fire its
laser beamsolar laser beam at the rest of reality. What I’m saying is that Lovecraft could have been avoided if programmers just used their daggumcommassemicolons correctly. Dang it.EDIT: the joys of irony. On the other hand, I’m not programming a matrioska brain, so.

Interesting programming setup: 3 programs (A, B, C), 3 valves (1, 2, 3), and the ability to program up to 3 start times per program.
So my mistake was trying to use all three programs. I deleted everything and said, "Hey, program A! Run valves 1, 2, and 3 for 10 minutes each starting at 9:00 pm tonight!"
We will see whether my second endeavor bears fruit.

Although you really should run it in the morning as opposed to at night because the water doesn't evaporate at night so you might get patches of fungus that will kill the grass.
Though I totally understand if you don't want to wait until then to see if it works.

I like to water at 5:00 am, but the noise woke up GothBard, and the Fluffernutter goes out at 5:45, so it's just too narrow of a window. We'll see what I can do.
Usually 7 is a good time to set them for (it's the default time I usually set them, when I had to set them up).
It being August it probably wouldn't be a big deal to water at night.

Well, you *can*...
Call your boss at home every 15 minutes until they get there to cover for a while. Bosses frequently need to be reminded what it is the people doing the work actually do. Then make sure that the next guy doesn't relieve the boss. The boss needs immersion therapy, after all.

Wow! They are amazing (as the wasted guy next to me said), and he's really talented with not just keyboard & trumpet & theremin (or was that the drummer); but also with the conceptual stuff - the whole mood and theme was darkly brilliant.
I did love the re-imagining of Bohemian Rhapsody at the end.
In my view, Nordic Giants stole Damnation Festival in 2017. Speaking of I'm amazed with this years line up, Opeth/Alcest/Primordial/Jo Quail.
