To rez or not to rez in 5e?

Raise dead text:

Coming back from the dead is an ordeal. The target takes a -4 penalty to all attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks. Every time the target finishes a long rest, the penalty is reduced by 1 until it disappears.

The problem here is I'm in Ravenloft and each time I get a long rest is at the end of the session and we're about to fight the BBEG. Soon, eventually.

I'm really weighing on how much I'll be a liability to the group. Attack rolls, Eh they can live with less dps. But you know, I'd choose death over corruption(yes, no kidding on that one).

Again it's rather hard to get a new player in so I'd be letting my group down if I left part way, but I don't want to hinder the groups efforts in fighting the bbeg if they need to come to my rescue. Or worse if I get dominated to fight them.

I get at about 6 these days, get some coffee, see what's going on in the world, and then stop over here for a few minutes before getting breakfast, clothes, and lunch ready for Tiny T-Rex, and then again when we're walking to school or when we're at the playground before school.

After that, it's the mile walk home, then I get to walk the dog and eat breakfast.

So, I've tiraded about it before, and I'm sure I'll tirade about it again, but this morning just incensed me. As I put out the garbage, I spotted a woman walking her dog in the absolute dead center of the street, walking towards the blind intersection.

So, our street runs north-south. At the southern end of our block is a two-way stop on a hill; cars traveling east-west do not have to stop. Since it's on a hill, the westbound cars are typically going 25-30 mph when they pass our block. (It's a 25 mph zone.) To make matters even more dangerous, the homeowner next to the corner always parks her huge black minivan right at the corner in spite of neighbors' complaints, completely blocking visibility for the westbound traffic.

So there have been multiple collisions there, including a major injury collision just last year, as people coming off of our block roll through the Stop sign with NO visibility (unbelievably stupid) and get T-boned by speeding westbound traffic.

Thus, when I see a woman walking her dog in the frigging middle of the street, where even an absolutely-legal westbound car doing 25 mph and going around the blind turn with the van blocking visibility would have no opportunity to miss her, I get pissed off.

She's risking her life (her choice), her dog's life (shouldn't be her choice), and the life of any driver coming down the hill (most people's lives would be ruined if they accidentally killed someone else), because... what? What possible purpose does she have in being in the dead center of the street? And if a car kills her, the driver is going to be mostly at fault because he/she went too fast around a blind corner, so yeah, the driver's life will be double-ruined.

Grrr...

EDIT: And 5-7 am Central is 3-5 am Pacific, so even when I'm up I'm typically playing Final Fantasy.

NobodysHome's Journey, Day 3: Who Wants Walkies?:
Friday was supposed to be a really easy day for us: Two college "seminars" where the kids sang for college music instructors who would then give them pointers on how to improve their overall performances, then an evening at the beach with a bonfire and s'mores. So we got up at 5:45 am, set up the breakfast area, woke the kids, and got moving.

The drive to the first college was delightful. I told my girls about our plans last year for "Team Put a Shirt On" T-Shirts (and a bikini top for the girl who inspired it all, with "'Put a shirt on' on her left boob", according to the girls), and Z, an artistic sort, promptly set about designing "Bubbleweed Machine" sweatshirts for all of us. All the girls chimed in, handing the phone around to made design suggestions and modifications, until they were all happy with the final product. Z tried to order them, but it was $35 per shirt. The disappointment among the girls was palpable. So yes, I just handed them my credit card and they ordered the sweatshirts. Team Bubbleweed lives on!

Unfortunately, then came the precursor to the rest of my day. I followed the buses onto campus, they disgorged their students, I disgorged mine, and I followed the buses, hoping they would park somewhere I could join them. Instead, 2 of the 3 buses double-parked in a red zone just up the street. I figured I could sneak in, but one of the drivers told me that I needed to move aside for the third bus, at which point I could park behind them. So I moved and waited. And waited. And waited. The third bus hadn't arrived after 10 minutes so I set off to find parking on my own. Another 10 fruitless minutes and I finally spotted a campus staff member driving around in one of those electric carts, flagged him down and asked him about parking. Even he couldn't tell me where there was public parking, "But if you go into the student lot you can buy a day pass."
So how is that NOT "public" parking?!?!?! Grrr...
Back to the student lot at the very very top of the hill, paid the $8 to park, and hiked the 1/3 or 1/2 mile to the performance, just in time to miss all of Impus Major's section's performance and hear only the feedback. Double grr...
So I got to see the rest of the clinic, then it was race as fast as I could back up the hill to get the SUV to come back down and pick up the girls and follow the buses to the next campus. I normally walk 2 miles a day through the Berkeley hills at a very brisk pace (4 mph, or 6.4 kph for you furriners), but the "straight up a hill in steel-toed boots" clearly made my tendons cranky; I pushed it a little too hard. But I drove to the next campus, this time found a parking structure, walked to meet the chaperones, they'd sent the kids off to lunch, so another walk back to the car, then to the lunch spot where we ate at a very mediocre ramen place (after Sobo, no ramen compares), then back to campus. Call it another 2 miles or so. I didn't get to see the second clinic at all because it was back to Costco for me with G to get food for the picnic. We picked up what we could, stopped by Target for the rest, then went to the beach.

Parking for the buses at Huntington Beach is $100 per bus, so Ms. S asked me and G to scout around for other places the buses could come in. So, yes, we walked the length of the park (maybe 3/4 mile) until we found a spot outside the park the buses could use, then I walked back to get the SUV and bring it over. The buses showed up and disgorged students and gear, and the beach police showed up and sternly explained that
(a) We were not allowed to do that, and they'd ticket us if we tried it again, and
(b) Technically, for that large of a crowd we needed an event permit, though they'd overlook it this time.
So they were not unreasonable officers, we were just asking too much of them to overlook 3 buses double-parked on their property to avoid paying their fees, plus 140 people having a beach party without a permit.

So the moment everything was unloaded, A asked me to help her look for a place where the buses could pick up the kids. On foot, of course. So another hour of hiking around the Huntington Beach area, looking for places for the buses to double-park. We finally found a construction site we could use, so the beach party was a success, we stuffed the SUV full of all the gear so the kids didn't have to carry it, and the kids hiked to the buses for the ride back to the hotel.

All in all, I'd guess I did 10-12 miles in steel-toed boots. Not a great choice of footwear given the situation.

But we had another relatively-quiet night at the hotel (a couple of noisy rooms, but still much better than usual) and got to bed at 11:30 pm for the next day at Disneyland.

And random stuff I forgot to mention from days 2-3:

  • As usual, on Day 2 I had no breakfast (getting up at 1:30 am does that), then the "emergency" had me running around so much that I had nothing but a cup of coffee the entire day until we were settling down for the evening. It's the Chaperone Diet Plan!
  • As I was complaining to another chaperone (G) about Sick Girl's dad's behavior, she pointed out that maybe he was really upset about losing the money for the trip, plus having to pay for her airfare home. I responded that Ms. S was a generous person, and would almost certainly have refunded the man for most of SG's trip if he'd asked, and considering that I was paying for 4 "scholarships", if he was in need they could probably use some of that money. And it IS in the contract that if a kid has to go home, the parents agree to pay for the airfare.
G then admitted that she was one of the ones on the receiving end of my "scholarships", and she and her kids really appreciated that I was doing it for them. I really liked hearing that I was helping a couple of really awesome kids, but after tirading about how, "I'll pay her d**n ticket if it'll get her home safe!", it was kind of awkward to hear that the other chaperones aren't in that kind of position.
It's pretty easy math: ALL of the other key chaperones work for either the school district or the city, and most of them are part-timers, so it's doubtful that any of them break $40k/year (with the exception of Ms. S and K, who are full-timers).
R (the new guy) and I make significantly more than that (not entirely comfortable saying just HOW much, but "well over double" is an idea), so we were much more proactive in our, "This needs to get done, let's do it and worry about reimbursement later." We're just lucky that both of us are in that position, and we have to keep reminding ourselves that we're the unusual ones here.

    Urgh.
It might not be proper decorum, but I hope my fellow FaWtL's will grant me a small pseudo-soliloquy.

So my grandfather (mothers side) just passed away (more precisely about three hours ago).
As the oldest (thus far) male member of my family he lived to the fine age of 90 years old.
He had slowly, but surely been racking up various health problems for quite some time, so in a sense, his death wasn't unexpected.

He was a man of his time. Born in the 20's he'd lost touch with the speed with which society sped along, and struggled to make sense of rapid development of the world around him. As a staunch conservative, we often didn't se eye to eye politically, but as a jokester and a bit of a comedian he was always fun to be around, and that mischievousness is truly something I'll miss.
While "old" in outlook and right-wind in opinion (and voting) he was never truly unreasonable. Them foreigners got accused of a lot of things, and he was leery when an Iraqi family moved in next door. Though as with so many other things he blatantly claimed to dislike, the old coot still helped them get their first vegetable garden growing, and he would invite their children and grandchildren over for a cold drink and some fruit from the garden in summertime.
In short, his "Good" might not have been your "Good", but he did his best to make his time here a boon to those around him.

You'll be missed Carl. I know that much cause I already do.

Possibly political, but probably a unifying issue here in FAWLT:

    Spoiler:
I had half an ear on the Senate Zuckerburg hearing today, and didn't hear anything I didn't expect to. Lots of questions, some of them pointed, and lots of carefully worded replies. Anyone catch anything more?

Zuckerburg says he's open (with qualifiers) to regulation and I've heard talk of regulating FB as a public utility, but I don't see that happening under the current political reality. At most, I can see a few light and inconsistent regs getting passed...possibly even before Congress eliminates the presidential term limit, but probably after. ;)
