Answering questions:

@Tao: There are doors on both sides of the Coach, if it's anything like every coach you've ever seen. You only saw one side of the actual coach back in town, and that side had doors. Any doors are liable to be locked. The caltrops are about 250 feet off the west (left) side of the map. Janiven and the FotR are about 100 feet beyond THAT.

@Hardin: The horses are being sort of handwaved at this point, they've been stashed off-map, far enough away that they won't give the party away but close enough that they are accessible within a reasonable period of time. The town is east (the right side of the map).

No stealth check is required, a Medium creature can lie prone behind any boulder or stump and have total concealment from creatures on the opposite side.

To have it on this page:

Thanks for the tactical reminder, Freya.

Sarien takes a position next to Freya. At I-16

"I'm out of my element. There are no alleyways or barrels out here." he mutters with disgust and prepares a spear with his spear-thrower.

Male Half-Orc Barbarian 1 - Inquisitor 1

Ok, if I understand this right, then Tao will position himself behind the boulder at N-16.

The map has been updated with those coordinates (the wagon is indicative of where it will enter the map, it's not there until everybody gets placed). Still need coordinates from Hardin and Rauno.

"Rauno, you and I should stay close together until you get your spell completed. Stun the horses first, before they reach the bridge, then enlarge me if there's time."

"I recommend we wait here." Hardin crouches by the pylon at the southeast corner of the bridge. "I think we can hide behind this."

One of you could hide in M-14, yes.

Freya grunts in agreement. "You and me both would be more comfortable if this prisoner transport was going on in the dark. Nothing like presenting yourself as an obvious target."

How about N14 for Rauno, under the bridge and next to Hardin?

OK, that'll work for me. Update brewing!

The party rides to the ambush site, cold late afternoon air whipping against your faces. At the ambush site, the group hunkers down and awaits the carriage. After a fair amount of time - half an hour or so, plenty of time for Janiven's group to be in position - the carriage can be heard coming up the road, along with a band of about 10 men.

As the carriage moves into range (where it is depicted on the map), one of the men can be heard to call out, Oy, wha's this? Cocky idjits wavein' their weapons and standin' all exposed-like in the middle of the road? This is followed by the laughter of several men. Lower lance, 'n ready 't run 'em through, me boy-o's! the voice continues, followed by a deep authoritative voice, which carries on the following discussion with the first voice:

Hold, Armiger Dawson.

Wha' now, Shanwen?

I'll remind you that your responsibility here is to the safety of the prisoner.

Now the first voice responds again, rising in pitch and intensity.

And I'LL remind YOU, Shanwen, that though YOU be in charge of the transport o' this prisoner, I'M in charge o' the 'orsemen here. Now, MY lads 've been sorely chastised o'er the last day for not bringing further insurgents in for questioning, and it looks to me like this is their time t' do so. So NOW, MEN, LOWER LANCE N' READY TO RUN 'EM ThROUGH!! HAH!

The final exclamation is followed by the sound of horses accelerating to a gallop. The sound of their hooves can clearly be heard on the masonry of the bridge before they fade into the distance. Shanwen's voice can be heard, then.

Let's halt, men, and see what comes of this.

The wagon halts.

Just then, the faint sound of several horses in a frightened panic reaches the party's ears.

Idiots, Shanwen says. Turn it around, let's get ourselves a proper escort.

Surprise Round

Initiative Order:
Freya: 19a
Rauno: 19b
Hardin: 12
Shanwen: 11
Tao: 9
Sarien: 6
Armigers: 2

You are each welcome to take a surprise round action at this point, after which combat will proceed normally. There are 5 armigers present, situated as follows: 1 driving the coach seated atop the coach, Shanwen is seated beside him on top of the coach. 2 Armigers on either side of the coach, on the running boards.

The map has been updated.

How tall are the boulders? Can Freya shoot her crossbow from where she is? If so...

Popping from behind the boulder, Freya releases her crossbow bolt at the carriage's driver.
Attack 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 7

@ Freya: You're basically trying the Sniping mechanic, but without any effort to maintain a hidden location, if I understand you correctly, which is fine. Keep in mind, it's only a surprise round, so you get one action.

Everyone, your buffs are active, you were able to cast them when you heard the carriage coming - I neglected to mention that.

Freya's bolt sails directly under the driver's nose. He cries, Ware, Men! Ambush!

Rauno's up, then Hardin.

What a perfectly convenient initiative order!

Surprise Round, 19b.
Rauno will cast Enlarge Person on Hardin. Enlarge Person details.

Rauno's Mage Armor is up as a buff. Rauno waited until the surprise round to cast Enlarge Person on Hardin because he didn't want to give away Hardin's position permaturely.

Yeah, she just wanted to pop up and fire. Is the boulder tall enough to give her cover or partial cover versus the Hellknights' attacks?

Hardin moves to O-16 and casts Command on the armiger on the large crossbow on top of the wagon. (Save DC of 13). The command is "Flee!". With luck, this will cause the armiger to scramble off the back of the carriage and take him off his duty station for the rest of the fight.

Hardin's AC is 19 due to the enlargement. His reach is 10'. He cast Bless and Magic Weapon on his flail earlier since it lasts longer; the flail has an attack bonus of +1+2+1-2=+3, +7 if I'm disarming someone, and does 2d6+3 damage if it hits a person for damage.

Next up! Shanwen

It's a surprise round, Hardin, so I don't think you can move and cast.

Dark Archive

Male Human Cleric 1 | Fighter 1

If that's the case, then I'll just move and cast next turn. And hope nobody gets lucky. Again.

Actually, a few things going on here.

As mentioned earlier, it's a surprise round. This means that each combatant may take a standard or a move action. As a DM, I usually allow combatants to take swiftactions in place of this "standard or move" rule, but you can't cast and move in a surprise round.

So let's rewind a bit more. Rauno started casting Enlarge Person, which has a casting time of 1 round. So, Rauno can use the "Start Full ROund Action" Standard action (pg. 186, Core Rules) to start casting. He'll need to use his standard action in Round 1 to complete the spell before Hardin will actually get larger.

So, is Hardin doing anything during the surprise round?

@Freya: You'll have partial cover against the Armigers.

Hardin already cast Bless and Magic Weapon; they've got rounds to go yet in duration. He'll cast Resistance on himself so he doesn't go out of range of Rauno's spell, as he has the flail readied, and the wagon isn't close enough for Command. Next turn he'll run out to thump people.

Male Half-Orc Barbarian 1 - Inquisitor 1

surprise round
Tao moves to Q-21

Sarien's up, then we'll advance to round 1.

Male Human Rogue (Investigator)/ 1

As Freya pops up and fires her crossbow, Sarien risks a glance around the boulder and nots how far away the enemy still were. Thinking quickly, he decides to wait and see how the men react before exposing his position anymore than Freya already has.

[ooc]Sarien will take no action during the surprise round except attempt to maintain his hidden position.

Summary of Surprise Round

Freya opens combat with a near-miss from her crossbow, ensuring that the driver of the carriage will not need to shave for several weeks. Rauno begins muttering arcane incantations, and Hardin utters a few short words of power, bolstering his defences. Tao moves out to engage the enemy, and Sarien determines that discretion is the better part of valor and holds his ground, maintaining his concealment.

Wow, he actually made it!

The horse, who, unbeknownst to Freya, claims as an ancestor a famous Taldanese Charger who was named "'Ol Ironshanks", simply narrows it's eyelid and peers back at Freya menacingly.

Round 1, 19b.

Rauno completes his casting of Enlarge Person on Hardin.

Next up, Hardin.

To revisit my description of the carriage: 1 driving the coach seated atop the coach, Shanwen is seated beside him on top of the coach. 2 Armigers on either side of the coach, on the running boards.

There is currently not an Armiger manning the crossbow/ballista. Do you want to target Shanwen? He is the closest to the ballista, and the most likely person to try to man it at this point.

Yes.

As Hardin's divinely-weighted command washes over Shanwen, the Asmodean grits his teeth, clearly recognizing the spell for what it is.

Will Save vs. Command:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Shanwen snarls, and responds with an obscene gesture, one particularly offensive to followers of Iomedae.

I'll show you how it's done, Iomedaen!, he growls, turning slowly and pointing at Tao.

Halt ,he says, the word clearly bearing the unholy taint of Asmodeus.

Concentration Check (casting defensively), DC17: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

DC 13 Will save, Mr. Tao, or essentially you lose a turn.

Male Human Rogue (Investigator)/ 1

Just a little advance notice: Sarien is going to delay until after the Armingers act. He wants to see what's going to happen with the horse team and wagon before he chooses his action. Since they act immediately after Sarien it makes virtually no difference at all in the initative line-up, but I didn't want to hold things up after Tao acts.

Male Half-Orc Barbarian 1 - Inquisitor 1

save 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Sarien, I just want to quickly point out that you're giving up an opportunity to do sneak attack damage if you can hit these fellas, since they haven't acted yet and are flat-footed as such. if you let them act, you're going to lose that opportunity. Still want to do it?

From looking at the map, I'm more than 30 feet away from them. That means the only attack opportunities I have at the moment is using ranged weapons but a sneak attack would only be successful on a ranged attack within 30 feet. I could always move close enough to be within 30 feet of them but depending on what they do, that could either put Sarien in danger of being trampled by horses or as the closest target to the Armigers who haven't yet attacked.

Correctly me if I'm wrong, but so far they're not aware that Sarien's there. If that continues throughout their turn, they still wouldn't be aware of he's there, and if they come within range of his attack (by attempting to turn the wagon), he'll be able to catch them flat-footed just the same. If my rationale is totally off, however, I suppose I can rethink it.

Edit to add: Actually, I don't think I can catch them flat-footed no matter what I do unless I put Sarien at complete risk, so it doesn't matter one way or another. Anyway, I'm inclined to delay nonetheless.

I think Tao pretty much has the market cornered on being the person most in danger at this point, but - as you will!

The wagon begins to turn ever so slowly back toward Westcrown, which appears to be a cumbersome process. Based on the rate of movement of the wagon in this round, you'd suspect it will take about a full minute for the wagon to get turned completely around. The armiger who is driving the team swears at and whips the horses furiously. The other four armigers jump off of the running boards and move to eliminate the threat. Two peel off in Tao's direction and flank him, although only one is able to attack with his longsword this round, missing the bewitched man horribly.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

The other two armigers move in the direction of the enormous Iomedaen. One (O-19) fires at Hardin with a light crossbow:

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Confirm: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 1

...While the other (M-20) moves forward with his longsword drawn, hoping to skewer the lightly armored woman whom he saw giving his horse the stink-eye earlier.

Upcoming Initiative:
Sarien: 1
-----Round 2-----
Freya: 19a
Rauno: 19b
Hardin: 12
Shanwen: 11
Tao: 9
Sarien: 6
Armigers: 2

>>>Post-Armiger Map, Round 1, Arael's Rescue<<<

Male Human Rogue (Investigator)/ 1

Sarien shakes his head. Things had happened a little earlier than he would have preferred. Still, the Gods loved to make fools of people and their plans...

He shifted from behind the boulder and tossed a spear at the arminger approaching Freya.

Attack to M20: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Sarien's spear catches the young Hellknight in the flank, seriously wounding him. The Hellknight grits his teeth, though, and blocks out the pain, intent on his task.

Freya/Rauno/Hardin!

Female Human (Chelaxian) Witch 2 | hp 14/14 | AC: 12 (12 touch, 10 ff) CMD 12 | Fort +1 Ref +2 Will +3 | Perception +5 (+7 w/ familiar) | Init +3 | Attack of Opportunity +3 (+4 vs. Chelish officials)

Freya quickly sets another bolt into her crossbow, raises it, and fires, hoping to bury it in the armiger's skull.

Attack to M20 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 1

Gritting her teeth, she shouts back to Rauno under the bridge, "Hey, elfy, you going to come out and do something or just hide down there soiling yourself?"

Rauno's up! :)

Rauno will skirt his allies, moving to L18. From there, he will cast Color Spray, which should catch the Hellknights at O19 and M20.

Color Spray spell description

Just picking the right moment to strike! When are you going to do something other than impale random wildlife in the woods there? He says, gesturing in the general direction that her bolts went?

Hardin's up!

Male

Hardin steps up to Q18, whirling his flail over his head and attacking the armiger in Q20, as the crossbow bolt he absorbed barely touches his skin.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

With a sickening crunch, the elongated flail wraps around the armiger's weapon, the spiked ball hitting the back of his skull.

2d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 6) + 3 = 14

Next up, Shanwen.

Guys, don't forget the Bless spell cast before combat.

Yikes! I also forgot my trait bonus to attack Hellknights. :P That should have been a 15. I'm going to go add a note to my character sheet so I don't forget it again.

15 still misses, so no worries. You need a 16.

Armiger (O-19) Will Save: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4
Armiger (M-20) Will Save: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

As the colorful spell envelopes the two armigers, they fall down, unconcious.

DM Rolls:
2d4 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6

Shanwen rolls over to the Large Heavy Crossbow mounted on the roof of the carriage and fires off a bolt at Hardin. Please note, Shanwen moves to P-24)

Attack: Large Heavy Crossbow:1d20 - 3 ⇒ (11) - 3 = 8

Move it, you lackwit! he cries to the driver.

Tao, then Sarien!

Male Half-Orc Barbarian 1 - Inquisitor 1

Tao drops the longspear at his feet. He then sidesteps the flanking Armigers drawing his greatsword in the process. After calling upon the might of Erastil, he swings at the nearest Armiger (Q22).

attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
damage: 3d6 + 7 ⇒ (6, 2, 1) + 7 = 16

Tao is enlarged occupying R22-23 & S22-23. His AC is now 16

Male Human Rogue (Investigator)/ 1

Sarien finally moves out from behind the boulder and hurries across the dirt expanse toward the prisoner. Along the way, he pulls free his rapier and stabs down at one of the unmoving Armigers.

Move to L21
Attack Armiger at M20: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Damage (plus sneak attack): 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (3, 4) + 1 = 8

Actually, Sarien moved after the armigers in initiative, that was my fault.

The armiger (in Q-22) swings at Tao with his Longsword, abandoning all caution and throwing his full weight behind the blow.

(Power) Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

Following through on his attempt, he 5-foot-steps to R-21.

Sarien moves up and heavily wounds dispatches one of the Armigers that Rauno had knocked out. He seems to still be breathing, however.

DM J, the fallen hell knight in front of Rauno... what kind of weapons does he have? I am guessing a longsword from earlier comments.

Round 3, 19B
Rauno will pick up the fallen longsword and move to N23, threatening the Armiger at O-23.

Next up, Hardin.

Yes, a Longsword is correct.

Hardin steps to N21, and attacks the driver.

If the horse on the south side of the team is combat trained (unlikely) it will get an AoA against him.

"Tao, get the leader."

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Hardin's swing with the fail whistles over the driver's head as he ducks.

Shanwen is up next.

Shanwen's Will save vs. Freya: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

As he sees his men falling all around him, Shanwen's confidence melts into uncertainty. He attempts to jump off the back of the wagon, and unceremoniously twists his ankle.
