And, the reality is: Is America, relative to 1/6th of the world population (Western Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, some pockets in south and central america) viewed as conservative and ideological?

Why, yes.

Is america viewed that way by the (gay killing, woman oppressing truly backward and sexist) other 5/6ths of the world?

No, they view us as pretty liberal too...

You bring up an interesting point and I never thought of it that way...but I'm not sure why, politically, any one would want to own it.

I mean is the slogan "America - Closer to Iran than anyone else in the West!" a selling point?

We aren't even close, really. But, the truth is, Europe and Canada can cap all they want on us, their leaders know the wheels are coming of their fifty year social experiment, and they will have to seriously curtail their social programs in the near future. Zero population growth has a funny effect on "cradle to grave" coddling by government. As in, it makes it economically nonviable rather quickly (two generations, it turns out).

Yeah, we don't get much of that in the American press (it isn't politically correct to point out the favored party of much of our news media is following a path Europe is finding untenable, after all), but it is amazing what the European press is talking about...

As far as the social side, some stupid document by a stupid fringe group in Austin isn't going to stop our slow march towards sanity in this country, in a social sense, just as we aren't going to stop the slow march towards insanity in trying what Europe did even as Europe realizes it wasn't well thought out.

(Again, the programs were written at a time people were actually having three or more kids in a marriage, one or two kids in a marriage doesn't make a large enough population to support socialistic programs in a more or less free market society).

So, I'll sit here, laugh at the demagogues, and wonder when we went completely insane as a species...

It was a Thursday. I remember, because Oprah was on and had a guest talking about ways to keep your skin healthy.

Actually, we could do with LESS children, if we want to keep the level of lifestyle we have right now. Resources are dwindling (super-rapidly, since the oil spill), and more people is not the answer to that problem.

We would have an easier time marching towards sanity if crazy people like Glenn Beck didn't stir up flames of revolution in the hearts of the ultra-conservative.

And referring to a comment about Mao-he could have had a relatively successful communist regime...his heart was in the right place, he loved his people, but there was serious errors in judgement on his part for who he appointed to positions of power. There was substantial misreporting on all levels of government, and it didnt help that his own advisors shielded him from his own country. And he was a seriously crappy planner-all of his radical changes took only a few years to implement when they should have taken a longer, more thought out method.

Ok maybe people missed it, but I said I have a problem with the people who support this policy, specifically the ones who wrote it, and support it. So do I have a problem with texas as a whole no, disagreements in social ideology yes. But I do not hate texans. So stop trying to color me as someone who hates Texas because that isn't the case even in the the title to the thread I specifically said texas GOP, because that is who the article referred too. Thank you very much.

But, Jeremy, as the TEXANS on the board have pointed out, it is a small splinter group of the Texas GOP that has that platform, not the actual state GOP committee.

The Texas GOP has other things to worry about than people getting hummers, trust me.

Maybe one day we can all grow up and ignore the bile and rhetoric of these fringe groups and can start ignoring the stupidity. Then we can discuss things in a reasoned and mannered way. Instead of temper tantrums every time some one disagrees with us.

Cool. It is a particularly stupid piece of jack assery, granted. But you and the press allowing the assumption that the official GOP platform reads like that is a bit disingenuous.

Seriously, Texas has a VERY strong Log Cabin Republican group, who is accepted (perhaps a tad grudgingly) fully by the actual State GOP.

I guess it's hard not to attack a+%$*!#s like the ones who propose this, ideologies like that are why I no longer have a family, ideologies like that are why my husband was jumped and beaten badly. Ideologies like that are why I try to protect him everyday and don't dare hold his hand in public for his protection and for the protection of the a~+$*+@ that might attack us and I would likely murder. I take it personally. I think people don't know what it's like to be attacked everyday on some level or another, here people say faggot or queer in front of you all the time. So that in itself is why I get pissed at this stuff.

Several things come to mind. But lashing out in anger isn't going to solve shit, just alienate people. There are shitty people in the world. But, if you constantly allow them to make you angry, and preoccupy your intellect with their evilness, instead of just being happy and in love, they win.

I think part of the problem is the perceived willingness to accept claims that broadly painted such a hateful picture of the Republicans in Texas. Point being that because such ridiculous mistatements (equating the splinter voting block platform with the actual Republican party platform) are frequently done, people frequently accept them without questioning the veracity and thus perpetuate the mislabeling.

Does that make sense?

Just my two cents.

Edit: or...maybe my inrerpretation is off...

Ah what the heck posting in an OTD thread...

Re the platform, sounds like a bunch of hypocrites worried that someone somewhere might be having the type of fun that they probably secretly wish they were having. And yes its not the official Republican party's platform and hopefully isn't shared by too many of them.

I'm still not sure why these threads always devolve into what they usually become...

As for Canada, houstonderek, while our system of social programs is certainly not without its flaws, I'm pretty confident in stating that we've avoided the excesses of many of the European countries cradle to grave systems but nor have we adopted the American model. Its pretty middle of the road and all things considered running reasonably. Arguably, Canada has weathered the recent economic slump with the least amount of issues amongst the G-20 nations. The sky isn't falling up here. I'm not saying its perfect but it isn't all that bad either.

Oh and regardless of one's political stripes, Edmund Burke had a lot to say worth listening to.

But, you know, seriously, learn something about the topic on hand before you spout out your ignorant viewpoints. I haven't seen such global economic naivety since someone actually tried to defend Mao. Wait. That was you earlier.

Damn.

I wish this were an even discussion, but your obvious historical and economic acumen are far too much for my small intellect to grasp.

Hey, they let you post, why can't I?

Yeah, true, Canada actually dropped below 8% unemployment recently and is coming out of the slump. Amazing, since they did so without passing an economically crippling "stimulus package.

I admit to being a bit snarky about throwing Canada in there. But, to be honest, European nations, by and large, don't have a huge tar sand deposit (did some Ft. McMurray time back in the day) to fund their social programs either.

Honestly, your worldview reminds me of some sophomore in high school who just bought his first Che tee shirt and discovered that he can voice his opinion, however malformed and completely devoid of anything approaching sense it is.

I seriously want to know what school taught you that bs Mao revisionism, it makes anything Texas did with their textbooks look enlightened...

In before the lock.

Looking at the rules below the posting screen here. I'd say people are harassing others, and there is a lot of hateful speech here.

Houston, maybe you should stop insulting this guy's educational acumen; you are starting to sound a bit mean-spirited.

I lived in Texas for 11 years, and I'll never live there again. I have a lot of friends there that are really cool people; but I've never lived in a more backwards place IMHO. Having said that, Oklahoma and Arkansas aren't much better. And if it's your favorite place to live, more power to you. Everyone is different, thank the gods.

Why don't we try to cycle the rhetoric down and all be friends again; at least as close of friends as we can all be. There is hate and then there is hate.

Enough already.

With all due respect, I am addressing someone who threatened physical violence on one of my friends on these very boards. And who is fairly consistently rude to several other people I respect here. I give what is given. Period.

I understand; and you have given as good as you have received. But I have a very strong feeling that the PTB at Paizo aren't going to view this thread as a happy place. Nor should they.
