She's married to me, Lord knows she deserves a helluva lot more than just an occasional pat on the back.... she deserves a gorram Medal of Honor. :P

Grrrrr - All of this prep for my Runelords game is getting me all excited for next week's game. 3 new characters + 1 resurrected character to weave back into the story. Then the following weekend - its OwlCon! I think my wife's first PFS character is going to be an elven druid.

FRACK!!! I can't complete the quest that leads to me getting Cass as a follower!!! FRACK! FRACK! FRACK!!!

I've been building up a scenario in d20Pro for the better part of the day. I'm thinking of starting up a semi-regular game for 4 to 6 players, including my friend who currently lives in Houston.

Anybody interested in such a beast?

(BTW, my friend will be attending OwlCon, also.)

Did something unexpected today. put $30 layaway deposit on this only $118 left to pay in two months. I know I don't need it, but I want to learn how to correctly fire one. I have only shot shotguns in my life and that ruins the whole need to squeeze the trigger thing. Plus it gets me out of my apartment for target shooting.

There's a boys choir that is very autism friendly and has several members as well as the director who are on the spectrum. I don't know yet if Bryce is interested, but it would be a great chance for him to socialize outside the classroom.

The up side to ran/rog builds in a more outdoor game is that a 2 level dip tends to cover the trap finder slot just fine for the party while giving you access to social skills for RP! TWF and sneak attack obviously synergize nicely. Half elves work well if you want to split levels evenly, and basically any race is OK if you're thinking two level dip. Traits can also help round out social and knowledge skills too. I've played ran/rog straight splits in 3.5 and PFRPG with TWF and I find the skill, special ability, and combat mix to work well. I'm also currently playing a dwarven ran/rog/barb mix in Kingmaker. He's not optimized, but he's fun, and sneak attack and the two handed weapon style works fine too.

If you can use the APG, an Andoran Human with the two handed weapon style supplements a meat shield fighter well. If the party is good on front line fighters then archers are a nice addition with a larger party too.

Does that help any?

It wouldn't hurt to get in some ranged fighting as well. I mean, he is a RANGEr. ;p We're definitely using the APG. Thanks for the brainstorm ideas!

Honestly, if Red Hand of Doom is on the table, I would go for the ranger/rogue build. Even if you decide to go with the ranged weapon path the synergy with sneak attack is very nice, especially if you decide to maximize the number of attacks you can take.

Thematically, the ranger is a better fit with RHoD, at least in my mind. There are points where being able to track, set up ambushes, scout, etc. are extremely useful. It really is a "wartime epic" and the kind of character you are contemplating would work well in that environment.

+1 :)

I'm intrigued to hear what you come up with.

Dumb question, where I need my math checked. If you have a STR 18 at 1st lvl and you're wielding a greatsword two-handed, does it come out as 2d6+6 or 2d6+9? I thought it was a former, but I saw somewhere else someone came up with +9. I know the attack on this weapon would be a +5 (+1 BAB, +4 STR).

Thanks.

Second, if you decide to go the archer route for your combat feats at 2nd lvl, I've heard two different schools of thought arguing between picking up Precise Shot vs. Rapid Shot. Thoughts?

And finally, I'm trying to debate on a good trait. I already picked up Reactionary as one of them (a +2 to initiative is always good), but I'm being indecisive on the 2nd trait. I don't want to go with the Rich Parents and beef it up to 900 gp to spend even if it is the easy way out. Heh.

2d6 +6, +5 to hit is correct, the additional three is probably from power attack.

Sometimes I like to grab precise shot at 2nd so I don't have to get point blank shot. Unfortunately PBS is a prereq for most archery feats any way. I say unfortunately because shooting things at a range of 30 feet pretty much invites the melee counter attack. Of course ranged sneak attack is normally limited to 30 feet, so this might be less of an issue if you're going to have rogue.

I always like rapid shot, but not necessarily for the 2nd level ranger feat.

Suspicious is always one of my favorites if you're going straight ranger; there is an Andoran one that gives you acrobatics too, IIRC.

This sounds very intriguing but since I have a few live games going I will stay on the sidelines. I think people who don't have access to local, live players should get first crack. Have fun, I'd enjoy reading the campaign log.

I figure PBS won't be necessary if I can take any archery feats as a combat feat w/o being required to meet the prereq. So that is pretty much how I will spend those. I figure he'll be a 2H melee combatant who has the means to pull up a ranged weapon if necessary. I know that PS would be necessary to avoid hitting your opponents when firing into melee, but if we're coming into a campaign like RHoD, I figure RS would be convenient to pick off approaching opponents not in melee in the beginning rounds, drop the longbow and then wade into melee combat. Later, I can pick up Manyshot on the next combat feat.

EDIT: Since I only have 300 gp to spend and I dropped 250 of it on just the breastplate armor and greatsword, that leaves me with 50 left. I'll be working toward a composite longbow that's strength enhanced once I collect some loot. Hopefully that'll come into play by 2nd level.

The Marlin Model 795 is a fine varmint rifle, lightweight, fairly accurate and easy to handle. Good choice Woody!

And since .22 ammo is cheap you should be able to enjoy burning a box of ammo at the range without shooting holes in your wallet. ;)
