Little know fact: Pope Innocent II hated pancakes. Especially ones fired from crossbows.
Or was that Pope Urban II?

A charging man may not be as able to avoid the strike, but the maul also has major issues in timing the strike. It is significantly slower than other weapons, and it telegraphs all movements.
This also matches the historic use. The mauls were essentially 'one-shot' melee weapons. If the archer didn't kill the horseman or infantryman that broke through the spike wall the archer was dispatched in a hurry.
I'd be curious to see if there were any examples of it's use in prolonged fighting or by people who were commonly in melee as opposed to using is as a backup to their longbow.
The link above talks about the French revolution but it was again not chosen for it's effectiveness but for it's availability.

To go back to StabbittyDoom's question of "Why isn't there a Maul?"
Have you seen the Earth Breaker? It's a 14 lb hammer, 2-handed martial weapon.
You can check out the stats in the Free Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide pdf available here on Paizo.com.

No, actually, I hadn't seen that >.<
Thanks, though the weapon ends up having almost identical stats to the one that I made for a player already. The different is flavor, cost (I said 50gp) and weight (I said 12 pounds). Basically, no real difference (unless you go with the klar thing, which they likely wouldn't).
