Beholders suck anyway.

And so do mind flayers. Literally.

Liberty's Edge

They suck yuan ti's butts.

Liberty's Edge

Wo' abao' pont ed sticks?

SHADDAP!

wy donye just give them a cmb, and a cmd, and then shut up?

SHADDAP!

And slaad's are stupid suckers. Present company excluded.

Liberty's Edge

Wow. A frog head man. And he implants an egg in you when he claws you.
Great intellectual property, that.
I can't wait until it's pubic domain, cos Disney needs to make an animated film.

Don't forget all the different colors too. I'm surprised Crayola didn't bust TSR back in the day. Red, Blue, Green, Black, Gray...

It's like friggan kryptonite in the '70's.. Where Slver Kryptonite made Superman fart or something..

The Rainbow Slaad Alliance. Pathetic.

The Disney move wil have a girl child who believes there's good in the slaad's heart. And with friendship and many songs, she'll get him to rise above all the violence.

Slaad.. baah!

I sense that there is a story behind this.

Non-OGL "iconic" D&D critters that had to be designed anew for Pathfinder because of copyright issues, I think.

Liberty's Edge

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

F@@* githyanki.

Grand Lodge

Seriously, the only non-OGL monster I'll miss even a little bit is the kuo-toa. The beholder may be iconic, but it is hillariously idiotically designed; the only thing that saves it from flumph-like derision is that it is so tough. And don't get me started on the various beholderkin... Githyanki and githzerai won't be missed, and the new protean are much cooler than slaads. And, finally, mind flayers are dumb. Time-travelling monsters from the future trying to extinguish the sun? Please.

But Flumphs are AWESOME!

The PathfinderRPG needs Flumphs!

I think you missed the point from word one. ;-)

Edit: That sounds snarky, and I don't mean it that way. I can't speak to Heathansson's motivation.. but there's a lot of gripe threads about "boohoo, these monsters are gone".. I was just sayin' who really needs them?

Which I completely agree with. Beholders can go join THAC0 and New Coke in the dustbin of history.

Liberty's Edge

I don't even know what my motivation was anymore.

Yuan ti suck butt.

Who needs goblins? I don't.

Who's laughing now?

I never really had the need for such creatures. All those monsters just seemed needless filler material for new books. 2e splat, if you will.

ok I'll admit it. I am completely clueless as to the nature of this topic. From what I can gather the mindflayer, beholder and slaad are protected by the wall of WoTC and so the creative minds at PAZIO simply did a work around.
Am I right or completly missed the mark?
I played the last adventure where a whole buncha beholders came at us and we stayed inside their anti-magic areas and just meleed the crap outta them, they died quickly and badly.
We dont really use mind flayers or slaad anyway so no major loss. I'm sure to other groups that think their great it is heartbreaking but this simply gives you a chance to expand your monster profiles a bit.

It's really an argument without a real basis. You can still use any 3.5 monster out there, you might have to figure out CMD and CMB but that's not too hard. That and a feat or two might have changed. These people have delusions that their settings are going to be 'published' one day, and they are incised that there are certain iconic monsters you can't use IF you publish.

Honestly, it's just biotching for the sake of biotching.

No worries. I was just dismissing for the sake of showing how much cooler I am than everyone else.

Oh I know you really couldn't care less about floating ray-beaming eye monsters or Cthuloid ripoffs (and isn't that irony? restricted IP on IP-ripoff monsters! LOL)

How does Hero handle monsters? Is it all DIY modular or do they put out a bestiary or two?

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32

Hero does have Bestiaries for Fantasy Hero.

But they do not have the Flumph in them either. :(

They were all broken and needed to go. I will have fixed versions posted later.

Have you checked the Asian Bestiaries? I do not have them so I have no idea.

i dont miss them, because they are still in my game of choice.

Yep. And they are in mine as well. I have no illusions of getting published ;P

Given a choice between Coeurl (alias displacer beasts) on the one hand, and the entire Greyhawk campaign setting on the other, I know which IP I miss the more.

My ears were burning... don't worry about us slaadi. We egged all of H*sbr*'s and W*tC's marketing departments a couple years after 3.5 edition came out. Just look how chaotic things are over there now! Soon we'll liberate the IP, and then we'll all be free!

We can't take credit for the Eevill stuff; Demogorgon followed us in, and all the power went to his head(s).

Whatever. If you had my godlike understanding of game balance, you would realize that the beholder is the only limit on the powers of the fishmonger. Below is the math, but run it yourself if you don't believe me:

Average damage of the beholder: 3,456.2
Average damage of the fishmonger: 23.45
Flight speed of a sparrow: 34.2 k/hr
Weight of a witch: less than wood

As you can see, the beholder is absolutely necessary for the game to be balanced. Without the beholder, or an equivalent monster, PFRPG is completely unbalanced, ruined, and causes widespread suffering and chlamydia.

That's a pretty nasty eye-ray power, I gotta say.

If they hadn't nerfed the bluejay, it would totally fly so much faster than the sparrow, even when encumbered with coconuts.

The only thing that can bring Pathfinder in to balance is if they provide us with rules for using dead bodies as improvised shields.

Shield, heavy wooden;

Shield, heavy steel;
Shield, heavy flesh.

Let me tell you a story. I was playing in an RPGA event. We bhad just finished of a witch in a coal mine and were getting ready to explore the lower levels. MY character decides to grab the witch's body and carry it out in front of him like a shield. Lucky for us we did, because none of us saw the razor wire strung across the path until the witch's feet fell off. Finally we had explored as far down as we could, or so we thought. Finding a vertical shaft we doused the body in oil, touched a torch to her and shoved her in the shaft that was how we discovered we did not have enough rope to reach the nxt level of the shaft. So long story short, you should always carry at least one dead body with your party at all times.

Yes but it can also be used to bait monsters or distract them while you run away.
