The floor of this grim chamber is strewn with blood-stained straw, and the reek of slaughter is almost overpowering. The room itself is a killing floor. A metal track affixed to the ceiling dangles meat hooks here and there, allowing the hooks and their gory loads to be moved easily from the northwest where a large hammer sits on the floor amid a permanent bloodstain. To the south, a bloodstained grill covers a wide hole in the floor. Just north of the grill sit two large vats of water; one boiling and one cold. Two large butcher blocks stand to the east next to barrels of salt, and in the southeast corner sits a reeking vat of cast-off meat and bones.

There are three double doors along the northern wall. There doesn't appear to be anyone in the room at the moment.

Male Elf 2 Ranger/2Rogue

We will try to use as little light as possible. Is there a light source in this room?

Shadowleaf motions for Fortune to watch from the door and then carefully proceeds into the room, moving to the left along the wall. At the first door he will listen and look for traps/alarms before carefully opening it. He will do this for all 3 doors unless he finds something that requires immediate attention on the other side of the door.

Fortune will observe from the doorway, also watching the outside as well as the dogs for signs that they have noticed something.

Liberty's Edge

All the indoor rooms downstairs have a single candle burning within them, so there is shadowy illumination in a reasonable area around(enough that I don't mind handwaving it and assuming that you can see dimly in the entire rooms). The only area you would need your own light to really be able to see is outside or in the pens. There was real lamplight coming from the windows upstairs.

Listening to the western door there is a hint of noise, but after a few seconds you are able to identify it as the grunts of animals rather than the sounds of humans. Cracking open the door slowly you see two foul-smelling animal pens take up the majority of this room. Each pen is defined by a wooden fence set with a gate. Inside each is a long water trough and heaps of filthy hay. The floor here is hard-packed earth. Its hard to see clearly within the dark room, but in the larger of the two pens you can see two very fat and healthy looking pigs.

Moving on to the second doorway, no sounds come from beyond so you open it as well. It leads to a single hallway with a door at the far end(which likely leads to the shop entrance) and a door on the eastern wall. In the middle of the hallway a stairway runs upwards to the second floor, ending at a door.

Beyond the third doorway, he air in this room is stale, stinking of day-old meat and blood. Straw litters the floor, scattered to catch what drips from the meat hooks affixed to the walls and ceiling on metal rods. To the north is a low blood-stained table and two barrels of salt, while to the south, a pair of double doors stands. An iron bar extends through a narrow hole at the top of the doors; the bar runs along the ceiling for five feet before ending at a vertical pole running floor to ceiling.

You sounded as if you planned to open all three doors at some point if nothing was going to spring out at you, so I went ahead and described out all three rooms and added them to the map. Feel free to take your time to explore them more fully as you wish.

Updated Map of the Butcher Shop

Male Elf 2 Ranger/2Rogue

Precisely, thanks. It's faster that way. On the map, is up North?

Shadowleaf will look around the larger room as he moves back to the door. There he holds a brief consult with Fortune. It is decided to do a search before we proceed upstairs. There might clues or information that could be useful in a confrontation. The general filth seems at odds with the fat, healthy pigs.

How long would it take to do a search of all the downstairs? Just a normal/take 10, not a take 20.

Liberty's Edge

North is up, sorry, normally I put a key on the map. If you want to search the entire floor, taking 10, then you would be looking at just under 15 minutes. Is that what you want to do?

Edit: Also, would you rather just take 10 on the searches, or would you rather have me roll behind the scenes anytime there is something to find?

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

Fortune will think, Maybe Desna will help and he gives SL a bit of luck. Together they will search the 1st floor Fortune will attempt to Aid Another while the dogs are set to guard the entry points. Rufus to the outside and Sl's old dog at the stairs. SL will keep the new dog with him.

Go ahead and roll, once for my Aid Another(+4 percep) and twice (using a "Bit of Luck" and +1 for Guidance) for Shadowleaf(+8 percep/+10 with aid).

Liberty's Edge

Searching through the meat locker, you see a number of freshly cut chunks of meat that mostly appear to be pork or beef cuts hanging down from some of the hooks.

Looking through the large butchery room doesn't reveal much, but the area beneath the grating hides a foul looking pool, filled with congealed blood, bits of meat and bone. Trying not to lean in too close but to get a look still, you catch a brief glimpse of what you swear was something moving for just an instant.

The pigs push forward towards the edge of their pen and snap hungrily up at you when you move to look inside the sty, so it seems like it would be the best idea not to enter in with them to search by hand, but giving a visual inspection there doesn't seem to be anything amiss.

Looking through the empty sty however, there is some clumsily packed in hay beneath the water trough. Pulling it away reveals a small hole partially dug into the dirt and filled with a large pouch. Within the pouch is 450gp, 740sp, and a small pouch filled with assorted gems. Trying to guess their value, you would estimate you could get about 800gp from the jewels.

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

While Fortune stays below with the dogs, SL sneaks upstairs looking out for squeaky stairs and such.

Liberty's Edge

Moving to the upper floor, Shadowleaf doesn't hear anything coming from just beyond the door and so slowly creaks it open carefully.

A round table sits in this room, surrounded by four wooden chairs. A stack of cards sits on the tabletop. A cabinet to the southwest hangs open, a tangle of dirty clothes and blankets within. Four thin bedrolls lie rolled up against the north wall.

There is a single door out of the room, beyond which the occasional clatter of glass or scrape of wood on wood is heard.

Updated Map

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

Shadowleaf will make sure the door is unlocked.

Fortune will contact Vallis the Raven with the message spell, "count to 10(trying to time it to happen as I open the door), fly over and peck on the window, then go watch the back door." Then he comes up the stairs (casting guidance) and moves to the door, grabbing the cards as he goes by the table. Opening the door he walks in with Rufus, but otherwise with no weapons in hand. Shadowleaf will stay in the doorway, with only a dagger held casually in 1 hand. Fortune says in a serious manner, "Verik, we need to talk." Unless Verik attacks, Fortune will go over to the table, sits down and starts shuffling the cards, "Have a seat".

Verik was described as wanting to be a hero, so we are operating on the assumption he is somewhat of a "good" guy. Though we are suspicious of the motives of his "contacts".

Liberty's Edge

Verik

When you push open the door, Verik sits already at the table with a bottle and glass before him. He is on his feet in a moment with a longspear in his hand almost as if he was expecting someone to come for him and as he looks at you there is a hint of paranoia in his eyes. He squints at you for a moment before speaking carefully with just a hint of a slur. "You aren't the guard. Why are you here?"

As he considers your offer he sets the spear aside slowly, drawing a dagger from his belt. His eyes darting quickly between the two of you he lowers down into the indicated chair slowly, setting the dagger flat on the table before him with his hand on the handle, not directly threatening but not leaving himself unarmed either. "Speak."

Feel free to make a diplomacy check when you let me know what you are planning to say.

Edit: Correction that probably isn't important, its just a normal spear rather than a long spear.

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

Fortune shuffles the cards for a moment before dealing them both hands. "Actually, I would like to hear your story. Yes, we are technically here to bring you in, but I understand you are helping to feed people. I like that. It would be a shame to stop. Tell me, how did you get started? Whose idea was it? Just start at the begining and when you get to the end, stop." He basically ignores the dagger.

Male Elf 2 Ranger/2Rogue

Giving him the due of another alpha predator, Shadowleaf slowly steps into the room, keeping his stance casual. Shutting the door and leaving his dog guarding it, he moves away from Verik to a window. He will stand next to it and then glance outside around the edge, trying to be casually professional about the whole thing.

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

Fortune thinks he can use all the luck he can get for this.

Will use a bit of luck on the diplomacy roll
Got a "Server Error", so you may roll(twice) for me, +10(I think I had cologne on+2, +1 guidance, +7 skill)

Verik narrows his eyes slightly at you as he considers your words, his lips pursing as it quickly becomes obvious that he intends to dig in. "Yes, what we have been doing is a good thing. We have helped many people, its the entire purpose and you should let myself and my men get back to it. What have you done with my men?"

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

I assume he is wearing his guard uniform since that is in the picture.
Wow, 26 doesn't work, maybe i can get some modifiers from this post.
Do I get anything from Sense Motive +11

Fortune keeps playing cards, "What, you didn't know? They were taking money to hurt and kill people and had to be stopped. So we captured them and took them in." He says this casually, then stops and looks Verik straight in the eye, "You didn't even know your men were mercenary killers, so what else don't you know? Question, why are your benefactors doing things so secretly? They could have gone to one of the good temples and gotten assistance. So why you, why here?" Fortune will indicate his holy symbol, "I serve the Lady of Dreams and I like serving others, feeding the hungry and doing so without credit. I understand that. But I also understand that sometimes evil wears a generous face and it is often hard to see." Keeping his hands in plain sight, Fortune will stand up and move to a window (away from Verik), "Those people need what you provide, but at what cost? I will tell you what I think. You want to do good, you want to be a hero and you saw this city descending into chaos. So when a chance to help came along, you didn't even think and jumped at it. You're still wearing your uniform, so you still see yourself as a force for order and righteousness, not like your men who were mercenary cut throats. That is why we didn't just burst in and attack, you deserved a chance to explain yourself. I don't care that you deserted the Guard in their time of need. But I do care if this is a setup hiding an evil purpose. So quit wasting my time and talk, otherwise we can't help you."

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, the DC to sway him is pretty crazy, but there are lots of little things you can do that will modify it. You talking about the things his group is doing is a good example of this.

Verik narrows his eyes a bit, following Fortune's movement as he moves across the room. He hides it well, but the man does visibly blanch when you speak of what the other guards have done. "No, my men were serving as butchers, not mercenaries. They were here to help. Just because they didn't like how the guard was handling things doesn't mean they were cut throats."

Hints of the paranoia seem to come back into his eyes as you speak and as you talk to him a bit more it seems to be coming more clear that the drink has been playing a big part in how he has been holding himself together. His one hand still holds the dagger, but the other unconsciously touches the glass still on the table as if that could help protect him as surely as the blade.

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

"Then why was my friend able to hire them to go kill a man. That's where we caught them, at this phantom target's location. That is truth, I can vouch for this personally. But I imagine you put more faith in Mr. Booze. You know I'm right and that is why you are grasping at straws. Where is your honor? Help us out and we will do our best to help you."

Liberty's Edge

Sorry for being slow the last few days. The holidays and work did a pretty good job of overwhelming me, all should be back to normal now. I hope you both had enjoyable holidays.

Verik pushes away the glass angrily when you call attention to it. "What do you wish from me, priest? You seem to be asking me to take much on faith, about your intentions and my men. You say my men were out doing such work without my knowledge, but you show no proof of this. You say you serve the guard but do not care that I step away from them. You tell me that you simply wish to help and that I should surrender and open my own reasons to you, but you give me nothing but your word, and unfortunately those of your creed are not known to have to put their word before all else.

For all the evenness in his tone the last bit comes out with a touch of bitterness, as if he has some sort of bias or resentment against desnans.

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Fortune will shake his head, "I heard that you were an honorable man who just wanted to do the right thing, not some drunken sot. No wonder they chose you, you're a drunken stubborn fool.

I wanted to give you the chance to prove that your contacts have no evil motives or at least retain your personal honor by turning yourself in. But all I get is you questioning my motives. Well sir, I am not the one who broke his oath to the guard and deserted them in their time of need, encouraging others to do the same. But I am out of patience and you are out of time. Surrender now or we will be forced to take you into custody the hard way. The problem is, dogs are hard to control and you will suffer pain. I regret that, but the choice is yours."

This conversation is obviously not going anywhere...If he doesn't immediately (if his next action or words are anything but an act of..) surrender, Fortune will give Sl a "Bit of Luck" and order the dogs to attack.

Liberty's Edge

Verik pushes to his feet almost as if he intends to come at you, but instead he plunges the dagger's silvered edge into the table, leaving himself unarmed. He crosses his arms over his chest and glares towards the two of you. "You may impinge upon my honor as you wish, but I will not have you question my ladies. She granted the funds and contacted the farms needed to make this happen, but her only request was to feed these people. She wanted nothing else."

I am assuming that him leaving himself unarmed will be counted as a show of surrender.

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

SL will put his dagger away and get out some manacles. He will move over pickup the dagger before putting the manacles on and sitting Verik back down with a "sit". While SL is securing the prisoner, Fortune will check in with Vallis the raven and renew the message spell.

I will assume this surrender is genuine and that Vallis is ok. If it's a ruse, ignore the rest.
Fortune will sit back down and continue talking to Verik, with Sl to the side, "I'm truly sorry it had to come to this." He pauses a bit, collecting his thoughts, "If you are so convinced that you are right about your men and this situation, why are you so defensive and trying to drown your troubles with booze? Those are not the actions of someone who is assured of what they are doing. Those are the actions of someone who is conflicted.

What do you have against my Goddess anyway? What has made you so bitter?"

Liberty's Edge

When Shadowleaf pulls out the dagger he will notice that it is lightweight and surprisingly well crafted with a jeweled hilt. The dagger is mithral.

Vallis remains outside, currently unharmed, though he will report that he saw several imps pass overhead being chased by a flock of pseudodragons. This isn't too rare of a sight in this city(the imps are often released by apprentices in the acadamy trying to take them as familiars, and pseudodragons are native to the region and they often war) and he hasn't seen anyone else paying particular attention to the building.

Verik will allow himself to be shackled, testing them for a moment before sighing quietly. He begins speaking lowly, but his voice slowly goes up as he gets further into his speech. "I am defensive because you speak poorly of my men and I have nothing but the word of a follower of the vagrant goddess to say otherwise. I am agitated because I stand here in chains and am accused of treason for attempting to help those of the city that the guard and their new queen could not or did not care to help. And I drink because I knew it would come to this and the bite of it helped me to keep from going to see my lady while I waited for the noose to circle my neck!"

He takes a deep breath and gives a slight shake of his head. "I do not like your kind, priest, because one of your faith tricked my brother and had him driven from our home, likely to be killed. I have seen the ways your kind will use deception to allow them to continue comfortably down the road. I watch you with my eyes open."

Male Elf 2 Ranger/2Rogue

Offended, Shadowleaf gruffly says, "Answer the questions or shut up before I put a gag in his mouth."

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

Fortune merely stares him in the eye, "Every man is entitled to his own opinion and since I don't know the facts of this event I really don't have an opinion on your story. I believe that you believe it. But it doesn't really concern me at this time. What does is this situation. I wanted to trust you. I wanted to help you because I believe in what you are doing here and I really didn't want it to come to this point, but basically I can't trust you anymore. Your anger makes you a liability."

Liberty's Edge

I wasn't able to get onto Paizo over the weekend, it kept timing out on me. I was thinking it was having issues while the most of the crew was gone, but from other people's posting times it looks like it might have just been me.

Verik simply frowns at you, looking down at his manacled hands and then raising his eyes back up to look at the two of you evenly. There is no further question in your words and so he just waits a moment longer. "It seems clear you have made your decision. What do you intend to do with me?"

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

Probably the holidays or something.

"I could lie, since that is apparently what you expect one of my faith to do. But I won't. We are going to tie you up. Then we are going to meet your delivery and try to get the information from them. We will replace you in handing out todays meat. If we are satisfied that it is on the up and up and not some sinister plot, I can make arrangements for someone to take over for you.
You are going to be returned to the guard and they will deal with you. If you don't give us grief I will report how you cooperated and were unaware of your men's activities. I love freedom, but the riots are hurting people and need to be stopped, quickly. Your desertion has caused others to desert as well and has harmed the Guards ability to control the situation with a minimum of oppression and violence."

Liberty's Edge

Verik frowns and nods his head, seeming to calm slightly as he becomes more resigned. "I had expected as much. If you are true to your word, at least, then my lady's work will continue. It seems that I can face my fate knowing this. I suspect you waste your time talking to the farmer, but do what you must."

If you wish to continue to talk with him, feel free, but it sounds like you are chalking him up as having given as much as he is going to. Do you intend to take him back to the citadel now, or are you going to leave him manacled here while you wait for the delivery? Also, are you stripping his gear, searching the room, ect? Just trying to get a rundown on your plans.

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

It took so long to drag even the little info we got out of him (even after a 16+maxed out diplomacy skill) that I don't see it being worth the effort at this time. And I was expecting more combat with the men so I didn't memorize a charm person or hypnotism spell.
Our plan;
SL will tie him up and Fortune will continue to chat with him (seeking to use sense motive- please handwave this), while SL will search him (taking anything dangerous or cool looking) and both upstairs rooms.
Vallis continues to keep watch.
When SL is done he goes downstairs with his 2 dogs and slaughters the pigs and starts to butcher them. While he isn't a butcher, he is a hunter and that should suffice.
When the farmer shows up, Fortune will greet him and try to subtly pump him for information while SL secures Verik even more (gagging him - unless I can get an oath (that I can believe) from Verik to not run away or cry out) before joining Fortune. When the farmer leaves, Vallis the Raven will follow him, meeting us back at the Citadel around noon.
In the morning we will open the store with Fortune(as just a guy, no holy symbol evident) in front doling out the meat while SL continues to butcher the animals.
After closing, we escort Verik to the Citadel, giving him the chance (at the end) to walk in unchained and turn himself in (perhaps preserving some of his honor).
Probably try to take a nap before following Vallis to track down this mysterious benefactor.
Feel free to handwave much of this plan.

Shadowleaf will tie him up with rope through the manacles, attached to the feet. He will growl, "Deserters I can tolerate, mutineers, just be quite and I won't have to put you to sleep. By the way, whats in that blood pool anyway."

Fortune frowns, "Didn't mom ever teach you, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. He's not going to give us any trouble."

SL looks at Fortune and then back at Verik and with a pained expression, "Please tell me what's in the blood pool."

Liberty's Edge

Verik's gear:

Potion
Masterwork Chainmail with guardsman insignia
Masterwork Spear
Masterwork Comp Longbow(+2 str)
20 Magical Arrows
Masterwork Bejeweled Silver Dagger

Verik looks slightly confused at the question, shaking his head slightly. "The blood pool? Blood I would imagine. Scraps and gristle maybe. I can't say that I have had much interest in just what the men did with the carcasses of the animals. Parns had experience as a butcher before, I left the details of the business to him."

A bit before dawn, there is a rap on the back gate and you see two men who are leading a small herd of sickly looking animals, 2 cows and 3 pigs. The older one looks at you slightly confused, but it doesn't take much to convince him that you are supposed to take the herd. The man doesn't seem to know much about just who has hired him to deliver the animals beyond the fact that a messenger brings enough coin once a week for him to feel it is worth making the long trip into the rioting city every day as well as not to ask too many questions about it. After a bit of questions though he'll grow impatient, pointing out they need to be making the journey back so he can find some more animals to purchase for tomorrow.

When you later meet up with Vallis, he will report that the man walked several hours outside of town and then began visiting different farmsteads and seemed to be buying whatever cattle he could find.

Butchering the animals well is a much more challenging skill than you would expect, but shadowleaf at least does a passable job, not necessarily making proper cuts but taking good chunks of meat together. The people who arrive all seem desperate enough that no one particularly cares, either about improper cuts or the fact that there is someone different at the counter handing them out.

From this side of the counter it is much more obvious just how desperate the people have become, many of them are already showing some signs of starvation and have cuts and bruises from scuffles.

When you finally escort Verik into the citadel he will give a slight nod of appreciation when you allow him to enter the building unchained. He doesn't say anything as he goes inside to see Cressida, exiting her office a few moments later escorted by two guards towards the cells in the back of the building, one of the guards motions towards you "Cressida wishes to see you, sirs."

If there are any more details you wished to add in during those times? I tried to summarize it all, but we can add to any parts of it.

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

The summary is fine, thanks.

We will wrap up a few cuts to take back to our hostess at the Inn.

Sl will ask him Verik "Thats a mighty fine dagger, trade?" as he takes out his own mw dagger and Verik's silver one. "You won't need it where you are going and someone has to keep the do-gooder alive" inclining his head at Fortune. Fortune will ask, "Would you like us to do something with these nice weapons? Family, church, the Guard?"

I assume this is done in a back and forth style. Fortune won't just say this all in 1 breath, but I'm trying to move forward a little quicker.
When called in, Fortune wakes himself up from the half doze he was in. Shadowleaf may be used to being up all night, but Fortune likes a good nights sleep. When asked for a report; "There is a lady behind his desertion, but he has had trouble of some sort with clerics of Desna before, so he wouldn't tell us who she was. We do have a lead. The farmer who brings in the animals gets a messenger with gold on a weekly basis. We could try to track this down. Or, I have some spells that might make Verik more friendly, though I don't know how you feel about such magic. I believe he was motivated by a desire to help the poor and didn't know about his men's mercenary work."

Also, "Before, we ran into an odd situation..," tells her about the marketplace (Sabriyya), though glossing over the guards stationed there, and asks her opinion.

Fortune ask when they will be brought before the judge (we want to be there), and will leave a signed note for the magistrate for both Verik and Karralo, basically "They didn't resist capture and leniency should be considered." Just in case we aren't there when they are brought before the judge.

Finishing with the interview, yawning "Sorry, unless you have a critically urgent job, we have some business to arrange and will be back tomorrow morning to see if you need any more help."

We would like to arrange for a few people to take over this enterprise (distributing food to the poor). Maybe through contacts with the Innkeeper, cleric of Desna, Ishani of Vudrani, the church of Sarenrae or maybe Vencarlo Orisini (still want to meet him) . I don't mean for those people to do it, but maybe they know people who could.

Liberty's Edge

Bringing back some of the meat to the tavern brings out an obvious gratitude in Theadra's eyes as she hurries it in the back to add it to the watery stews she has been forced to begin serving. She'll hint that she has a surprise for you two later, but refuses to spoil it by telling now.

Verik looks very displeased when you handle the dagger, though he seems not to care much over the rest of the gear. "The other supplies were requisitioned, I am sure they will be wanted back by the guard. That, however, was a gift. I would not see it lost or toyed with." He gives almost a resigned smile, accepting of what is likely to be his fate. "Just what do you think you could offer in trade that I can use now? If you and your friend are going to rob me before you turn me in, then do so. There is no point in pretending it is something pleasant."

Cressida will nod her head as she listens to all of this, considering your offers and suggestions as to the men's motivations. "I suspect the mens trial will not be for some weeks, at least not until the riots have calmed down and the city center is able to operate at full capacity again. I will keep you informed of the matter, however. This additional intelligence on who may have started this is good, but you two have already proven yourselves too useful. I wouldn't waste your talents on running errands. I will find a recruit to watch for this messenger and my men will keep their ears to the ground for news of the woman who financed this, though for now she is stopped and that is what is important."

"Speaking of your talents, I do have a new assignment for you forming, but I will not have all the details until nearer to dusk tomorrow. I have a friend who I trust greatly and has suggested that there may be some trouble brewing in Old Korvosa. He knows the place well and so I am ready to take his word and act on whatever information he supplies. However, while he is well respected in town, he... has been something of a vocal critic of many of the governments policies of the past. Never causing trouble, mind you, unafraid enough of speaking his mind that it is considered inappropriate for him to be serving as an official asset of guard. With that in mind he will arrive after dark tomorrow and I would like you to join us here. In our previous missive I mentioned the two of you as skilled agents and he is eager to meet you both."

Something of a smirk touches Cressida's face at the mention of Sabriyya. "Ah, yes, her. The Princess of the Docks. She is an interesting case. Truthfully, I expect that she is little more than a crime boss, but she runs things in the market legitimately enough. Keeps her own squad of goons around to keep an eye on things and make sure the business in the market runs smoothly. Its a well known fact that they are more than willing to dispense their own justice to those who mess with any of the stalls on their territory, though we've never been able to pin anything on her and frankly I've been told from on high to stop trying."

"Really, its something like a protection racket, only she offers real protections. Shoplifters hear that you touch one of a merchants oranges and you disappear, so they find safer marks to hit. Merchants know their wares are safe so they are willing to pay a bit of extra tax for a spot in her market. The coin counters see she is good for business in town and tell us to look the other way. The market becomes a spot for a cushy token patrol of guards that I wouldn't trust to stick anywhere else while her men provide the real muscle. Honestly though, while I may argue the methods I can't argue the results. Even with all the patches of chaos out there, all her shops are operating. Thats something, right?"

When you leave the citadel, it seems that Ishani is your best direct contact for getting the people helped. The trip to the Bank of Abadar is a shocking one though as the city seems to have stepped further into chaos over the last day. The rioting has spread further as people become more desperate with their lack of food and several fires are seen.

Ducking down a side alley to avoid one of the pockets of rioters clashing with one of the groups of hellknights, you are nearing a corner when you feel a small rumble pass through the ground that almost feels like an earthquake. An instant later it comes again and stays steady, growing ever stronger. Then, with a sudden crack, the rock of the alley floor explodes upwards in a cloud of dust about 10 feet from you and what looks much like a pile of filth propels itself up and out onto the ground. Oddly, you can see a set of eyes peering out at you and that it stands on three legs with a pair of tentacles shifting through the air as if smelling.

Go ahead and roll initiative for me. A DC 13 perception check will indicate that you realized it was something moving below rather than an earthquake just before it appeared and so you are not surprised. I was getting ready to start fiating in some of the random encounters when you guys are walking around town because I never seem to roll any of them other then the one with the noble. Glad I finally got a good one, been a while since we had some combat.

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

Ahhh...I've seen the front cover of this module...

1d20+4, 1d20+0 → ([6, 4], [10, 0]),

looks like 10 perception
and 10 initiative

Distractedly, Fortune looks around instead of down. Oops.

Male Elf 2 Ranger/2Rogue

To Verik; Shadowleaf shrugs, "you won't need it swinging from a rope".

Fortune looks shocked, "We are not thieves. So what would you like us to do with the dagger? Family, church, the Guard?"

We will turn in the rest of his equipment.

1d20+7, 1d20+4 → ([18, 7], [1, 4])

My typical bad initiative and since I can't do worse, let's reroll with a Harrow point...1d20+4 → [19,4] = (23)
Assuming I get initiative

Shadowleaf attacks with the polearm while giving the command word for attack to his dogs;
1d20+4, 2d4+3, 1d6 → ([3, 4], [1, 3, 3], [3])
which probably misses. Then he will moves 5' with an eye toward drawing a kukri and flanking next round.

Liberty's Edge

Verik shakes his head slightly. "I don't know what has happened to my brother and I attend no church here. Do what you will with it."

Don't worry, SL, it got worse than you in init. The dogs will attack on your initiative in the full round.

Fortune 10
Shadowleaf 5
Otyugh 1

On his guard immediately as the creature surfaces, shadowleaf is moving forward and swinging. The ground cracks slightly beneath his feet and gives a bit of a lurch, causing his weapon to go wide.

The beast fully surfaces itself, giving a hungry snarl down at you, eyeing the smaller dogs with particular desire.

The creature is large in size and the smell coming from it is horrific, a mixture of rotting meat and sewage. You two are up first.

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

Fortune had heard of the monsters in the sewers, but had never seen one. He mentally tries to remember what he knows. (know arcana/local +8; otherwise I doubt if planes/religion/nobility would help.) But while he thinks, he acts.

A-If SL can flank with the dogs:
He moves behind SL and gives him a "bit of luck" for the next round

B-If SL can't flank with the dogs:
He takes a (5') step back and starts summoning a celestial dog to flank with SL.

Liberty's Edge

Quickly made map just to give an idea of where everything is.

At least one of the dogs can get around to flank with SL and it won't provoke since the Otyugh hasn't acted yet.

Male Elf 2 Ranger/2Rogue

For Verik: Shadowleaf shrugs "We will make sure it gets put to good use. If I find a Vancaskerkin, it is theirs."

Shadowleaf moves to flank (tumbling if needed) and pulls out his mw Kukri. He slashes at the monster, "Interesting wildlife you have in this city."

1d20+7, 1d4+2, 1d6=[19, 7], [2, 2], [2]
1d20+7, 1d4+2=[2, 7], [4, 2]
Use of Harrow Point- since the attack uses dex, to reroll confirmation
1d20+7, 1d4+2=[18, 7], [4, 2]

Edit: Ninja'd by the DM...

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

It looks like the best bet is for Fortune to wait (if he has to) and let the dogs move forward to attack, then step back 5' and start casting the celestial dog on the other side.

It looks like SL will need to tumble 1d20 +8=18 to the other side and attack from there, flanking with the dogs.

Thanks for the map, it really helps. I run a RotRL on another site and play in several games, and I have noticed a distinct lack of tactical thinking in PBP.

Liberty's Edge

The dogs rush forward, snapping at the creature, one of them tearing away a bit of meat from it though the other two seem to have difficulty getting through its hide with their teeth.

Shadowleaf is able to position himself well with their distraction, however and he strikes true, cutting deep into the monster's flesh, even as fortune begins to work his spell.

The abberation turns towards shadowleaf, biting towards him though he manages to duck out of the way. He is only able to avoid one of its tentacles however, the other smacking him firmly and curling around him, squeezing tightly. The attack did 3 damage, but it succeeded in a grapple and constricted which did another 6 damage.

You two are up now. Also, if you would like you can feel free to start using the dice roller that is built into the forums now rather than having to use invisible castle. If you like invisible castle, thats fine, but I've been pretty happy with the build in roller too.

Also, I really wanted to apologize for having a lot of little lags in my responses recently. I don't know why this last month has been so crazy for me, I keep hoping things are settling down again. I really am enjoying this game and I want to keep it going at a good pace so you two don't get bored.

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

No problem, life first, game 2nd.

Fortune watches as the monster grabs Shadowleaf and he almost breaks his spell...almost. But his will is strong and he completes his spell, only to immediately start on another (5' diagonal step to c17), using grease on SL armor to let him slip free from the tentacle.

The Celestial Dog attacks (with smite evil), giving flanking bonus to the other side; +1 dam if evil
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 81d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Male Elf 2 Ranger/2Rogue

Shadowleaf feels the slimy tentacle wrap around him, yuck. He started to just continue to attack with his last breath, but then as Fortune finishes his 2nd spell, he began to feel his armor slip a little. Perhaps he could free himself; escape artist check at +10 for grease
1d20 + 18 ⇒ (4) + 18 = 22

If he gets free he will step behind the celestial dog (to d11) and drop his polearm/draw the mw mithral dagger.

I don't know, that's 2 4's in a row for the pazio dice roller...

Liberty's Edge

The magical dog appears and snaps out at the Otyugh with a flash of light though the creature seems surprisingly quick and evades its jaws.

The spell goes off, causing a thick oil to cover Shadowleaf who gives a quick shrug of his shoulders and manages to drop out of its tentacle, stepping back out of its reach.

The otyugh turns on the celestial dog after it snaps at him, biting towards it with a lurch and then snapping both its tentacles towards the animal. The first strikes hard enough to leave it a bit dazed, while the second bashes into the summoned creature and curls around it, scooping it up and squeezing until the dog goes limp.

The otyugh did a total of 18 damage to the summoned dog over the two hits and the constrict. You two are up now.

Edit: I forgot to roll for the other three dogs and hadn't realized you hadn't either. Here we go-

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 Dog 1 Attack
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Dog 1 Damage

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17 Dog 2 Attack
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Dog 2 Damage

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 Dog 3 Attack
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 Dog 3 Damage

The three dogs snap forward at the otyugh, one of them getting a chunk of it. The creature is starting to look injured now, though it obviously has a fair amount of strength left.

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

Fortune feels a sense of relief as Shadowleaf escapes the monsters grasp. He pulls out the wand and hits the otyugh with 3 magic missles;
3d4 + 3 ⇒ (4, 3, 2) + 3 = 12

The dogs attack; shouldn't the dogs be +3/5(flank); 1d6+3 dam
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 241d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 241d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 211d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

For Shadowleaf;

with 2 weapons, SL steps forward 5' and attacks
kukri
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 191d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 41d6 ⇒ 6
dagger
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 151d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 41d6 ⇒ 1

Liberty's Edge

I think the difference in the dogs attacks is between dogs and riding dogs, unless I am missing a bonus somewhere.

And wow, I just looked at those rolls. I think you got over your unlucky streak pretty quickly.

The magic missiles slam into the otyugh's body, surprising it and leaving it open for the dogs attacks. All three of them manage to get past its thick hide, biting into sensitive flesh at its throat and face and dropping it down to the ground where Shadowleaf steps forward and drives his Kukri into its spine, leaving it completely still with just its stench filling the air.

Within just a moment a handful of city guards are running down the alley to investigate the disturbance coming to a quick stop as they see you standing over its body, staring at you with somewhat wide eyes. One of them slowly stammering out."Are you ok?"

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

If the celestial dog is still around he will dismiss with a "Thank you" in celestial. Fortune will breath a sigh of relief, "Thank you, yes we seem to be just fine. It just came up out of the ground and surprised us." With a look from SL (a raised eyebrow), "Ok, it surprised me. Hey I was looking for falling debris." Fortune will cast clw on SL, 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Male Elf 2 Ranger/2Rogue

SL stands there cleaning his weapons looking at the body, looking at Fortune, then back to the body "So how much food can you purify anyway? Well son, you're the wizard, any of theses parts useful"

M Half-elf 2 Cleric/2 Wiz(conjure)

We have a friend in our RL gaming group who is obnoxiously lucky. This must be what he feels like, 2 20's and a 17...wow.

Fortune gives it some thought...are Otyugh edible? Are there any parts useable for magical purposes?
