Joneth

Spoiler:
You feel faint emanations of evil pulsing from the flickering black candles on the sarcophagus.

Liberty's Edge

"I wager there's something in that coffin waiting for us. Can someone light up a torch? Those candles are evil relics of some kind."

The paladin draws his sword and readies his shield.

Once there's another light source I'll knock down the candles, if that OK with everyone.

Male Human 4 Wizard

Dartalis raises his everburning torch. The soft-green magical fire washes over the coffin with an eerie glow.

Just before the coffin is opened, he walks over near Joneth and begins to cast a spell.

"Desthiu imen erestu." After chanting the words, he gently touches the paladin.

He then walks over to Marcus and chants, "Desthiu imen erestu," and gently touches him then backs up out of the range of their sword arcs.

Protection from evil. 1 min./level = 4 min. = 40 rounds.
+2 deflection bonus to AC, +2 resistance bonus on saves.

Liberty's Edge

"Ready?"

Taking care not to strike his friends in these close quarters, he swings at the candelabras.

Joneths sword swings in a wide arc, whistling through the cold air and cleaving both candles in two. They fall to the floor as their holders clatter over in the opposite direction. The severed candles roll to a stop ... but the flickering flame on each one continues to burn...flames that have now turned black.

"Not sure how good an idea that was." Marcus says, eyeing the black flames.

Liberty's Edge

"Pelor, guide my hand!" shouts the paladin. Lets drop his shield and heaves at the sarcophagus, in an attempt to open or overturn it.

Marcus, steps farther away from Joneth and the sarcophagus.

Strength Check DC23 to open the sarcophagus

Liberty's Edge

Strength check 1d20+4=12

Liberty's Edge

Failing to open the coffin, Joneth stomps on the black flame candles.

"A mockery of the pure light of Pelor, this is what it is!"

Male Human 4 Wizard

Dartalis watches Joneth's muscles bulge and his veins pop out like cords of thick rope while he attempts to open the coffin and fails. He also pulls a scroll of shield from his pack.

He searches his mind for a spell and then begins casting and chanting.

"Arenoth oneth utin!"

Dartalis squeezes Joneth's arm and the magic flows into the paladin's body imparting magical strength to the holy warrior.

Bull's Strength 1 min./level = 4 mins. = 40 rounds.

"Perhaps that will help you, Sir Joneth."

Raising the scroll of shield to eye level, the wizard begins to read the strange magical language that echoes loudly through the room in unrememberable syllables.

Spell: Shield +4 shield bonus (target: self) 1 min./level = 4 mins. = 40 rounds.

"I will try to help you lift it as well."

Not sure if Aid Another applies to ability checks, but if so 1d20 = 13 for +2 aid bonus.

If there is nothing in this coffin, I am going to kick myself sooo hard for wasting all these spells :P

Liberty's Edge

I'm kind of hoping that snuffing out the black flames will open the coffin. DM, can we see if that happens before Dart casts his spells?

Yeah, sure Joneth stomps onto the candles, crushing them into the floor. As he raises his boot, you are all shocked to see the black flames, still lit, burning on a small piece of wick. The sarcophagus lid remains closed though.

Liberty's Edge

Joneth grows even more agitated as the candles continue to burn. He regains his composure when Dartalis' spell infuses him with the strength of giants.

"My thanks, Dartalis. Now I shall break this coffin and drive out the evil within!"

Strength 1d20+8=24

The sarcophagus lid slides to the side and crashes onto the floor with a loud thud. A blast of stale, fetid air hisses out as the lid is removed. Suddenly a loud manic laugh fills the mausoleum as a 6-foot tall skeleton with glistening, black bones, seemingly constructed of blackened
steel, leaps out of the sarcophagus to land amongst you. Small red pinpoints of light burn in its hollowed eye sockets, and in its hand it holds a rusted steel scimitar.

The skeleton tips back it's head and opens it's mouth as it shrieks hideously.

Too bad I'm a negative energy cleric, huh? Unless I rebuke it and have it stop moving while we pummel it into dust... >:)

Black Skeleton down to 24 hp

Joneth swings his sword, bringing the blade down in an overhead chop, but the undead creature nimbly shifts slightly to its left, and the basterd sword whistles past, inches from the skeletons right shoulder. It looks at the blade and then turns its baleful red glare onto the Paladin.

Just a little heads up guys. I have been running another game but it seems like it has come to an early end. A couple of the players from that game will be joining this one. Num-Rah is a Litorian Paladin, and Ilona is a human Duskblade. They are going to be a couple of adventures who have been trailing you after hearing of your intentions in Bards Gate.

Rebuke Check:19
The most powerful undead I can affect are those with 8 Hit Dice, though I can only control those whose total Hit Dice does not exceed 5.

The skeleton raises its weapon to strike at Joneth, then stops and glares at the new source of irritation. Foul words of power bombard it and bit staggers back. It's red eyes flash once before it's whole body is suffused by an unearthly red light. With a hideous cackle it drops the sword before its bones suddenly loose all cohesion and it drops in pieces back into the sarcophagus.

Damn! Didn't even get a strike in!

A misty white cloud of dust puffs up from the bottom of the stone casket and for a second you are sure that you see a grinning horned skull there. Then it is borne away on the breeze.

But rebuke lets me control if succesul... Oh well, it would have been destroyed by the paladin and the ranger anyway...

"Well, that was exciting wasn't it?"

Yeah, I know. Special effect of this particular room + turn resistance

Liberty's Edge

"Whew! Good job, Koryn. The monster almost had me there! Let's see if it was in there guarding something."

Joneth searches inside the coffin.

After the dust clears, Marcus examines his sword. Relieved to find no cracks, he walks over and leans back on the sarcophagus. . .his sword resting across his thighs.

"I hate skeletons," he mutters to himself.

Apart from scattered bones and dust, the sarcophagus is empty.

Bonus 50XP to everyone for great roleplaying so far. Lovin' it!

Let's go check out another tomb, guys?

Marcus, satisfied with his search, walks from the mausoleum and heads to one of the smaller buildings.

Male Human 4 Wizard

Dartalis breathes a sigh of relief when the creature is destroyed.

"I hate undead," he says, then nods to each of the others. "It's good we have an able team. I still have other spells prepared if you would like to keep searching tombs."

Great job, everyone! Updating my character sheet now. Thanks for the bonus xp, Dr. Dark. It has been fun so far! When are the others joining us?

Marcus

Spoiler:
South of the sarcophagus, between it and the south

wall, you locate a hidden secret door. It appears to be a 10 foot stone slab set into the floor. A recessed iron ring is attached to it.

Male Human Rogue/7

Marcus makes his way around the rest of the tomb, searching for anything else that might be of interest.

Marcus kneels down, running his finger-tips over one of the stone slabs that make up the floor. "Over here," he calls, when he finds an iron ring attached to the slab. After a quick search. . .making sure there is nothing strange about the secreted door (search-taking 10=19), he pulls on the ring, seeing if he can open it.

It doesn't want to budge. You think you may need a bit more muscle.

Liberty's Edge

"Here, allow me. I think I still have the strength Dartalis gave me."

Strength 1d20+8=14

I'm assuming that the two of you both pull at the ring

There is a groan of escaping air, pungent in it's foulness. In fact, its so putrid that for a second you both stagger backwards as if physically pushed. You think that the combined contents of the latrines of Bards Gate could only partly generate this stench.

With the slab removed you can now see (through watering eyes!) a circular shaft descending into the darkness below. The smell of death radiates from the pit as it descends down into oblivion. There is a rope pegged into the wall at the top of the pit that descends into the shaft.

Liberty's Edge

The paladin staggers back, overwhelmed by the terrible stench.

"Phew! That smell is a more dangerous barrier than an entire army of skeletons! Do we go down and see what these villains are up to? Or should we investigate the other crypts first?"

"I say close it and let us explore the other crpyts first. I do not want to be trapped between enemies."

Male Human 4 Wizard

Dartalis reels at the stench from the tunnel. Coughing, he covers his nose with his sleeves until he regains some propriety.

"I agree with Koryn," he says with a cough. "We should check the other crypts. Then we will have cleared an area that we can rest in before going down, if needed. But, I am willing to go along with the desires of the group, whatever you choose to do."
