I have a co-worker who has given up on his marriage. I don't know the full story, but I just know he's pretty much waiting until the kids are out of the house. There's a woman who works in the office, and I'm certain there is no physical affair going on, but he confides in her for *everything* and vice versa. So, I think an emotional affair is one step beyond just being friends with someone of the opposite sex (and I agree that you'd have to be pretty insecure to be threatened by a casual friendship).
