Wha...? I'm a trained artilleryman, and I served as a Fire Direction Officer in a light unit (all manual gunnery) as well as a Fire Control Officer in a heavy rocket unit (all digital gunnery).
This problem was solved a long time ago.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Only thing I can think of is they mean the exact path, like down to the millimeter precision. I'm gonna try and do a bit more research before I call it compeletely.
I (and hundreds of officers each year) was specifically trained for six months in nothing but Artillery Calculus at the [Field Artillery] Fires Center of Excellence at Fort Sill.
For example, I can manually (no calculator) solve for the exact action in meters per second of a 98 square weight shell to an impact point. The calculation itself is to within .01 meters. Now...reality has a say in the observed effects because of minute differences in actual weight to the gram, atmospheric delta, etc., so we calculate in something called probable error in range and probable error in location--which looks a lot like photon scatter.
Nonetheless, we solve for firing location, target location (including deflection and azimuth, altitude, etc.), weather effects (meteorology: pressures, temperature, wind, precipitation, etc.), rotation of the earth, gravity, piece-data (individual muzzle velocity in m/s, which is different for each artillery piece, a lot like a fingerprint), and munitions data (weights, fuze types, temperature of powder, type of powder, etc.).
Maybe the news report is a bit incomplete. I looked around, but couldn't actually find his solution or his paper anywhere.

All hell breaks loose in California as Rogue Ex Cop goes on killing Spree.
The headline on the last AP story has absolutely nothing to do with the story. They also claim that he has a select fire weapon. Any word on how he obtained that? God awful editing.
